    CAN'T BEAT PRICEPretty solid board ... and pieces are excellent (nice size, coloring, and weight - as advertised). Yes, the board isn't perfect -- two halves aren't perfectly aligned on the hinges, so there's a little 'bump' when you slide pieces across the centerline. And yes, the interior storage for the pieces is flimsy, but perfectly adequate for storage.We place the open board on a cloth to prevent the clasps from scratching the table, and that works fine, so ...If you're looking for a decent LARGE board to play with pieces you can actually see and 'feel', this will work nicely. And, you can't beat the price ($46.19 at time of this review in 2016) Finally, a tournament Staunton size board with No 6 pieces for less than $100 -- unbelievable.If all else fails, we'll eventually replace the board. But the pieces will last for decades.Hope this helps. If and when we'll need another Wood Chess set, we'll probably buy this one again. 5Not perfect but awesome none the lessThe chess set, was a bit late in its delivery. But then, I am always impatient once I place items on order online. Heres what you need to know:First of all - the chess set is HUGE. The images don't do it justice. It is big. The pieces are in wonderful proportion with the board - so once you lay it out, it looks very elegant.Pieces are substantial. I love playing with this chess set, because there is a lot of pleasure in taking the opponents pieces in real life. You never get that on software. The set as a whole should last you for years to come and it will serve its purpose adequately. Also - any guest you invite to play on this - is going to be intimidated - because the chess set has this air of serious gravitas around it. Like the knights and pawns will frown upon you on stupid moves! So it will play to your advantage.However, if you are expecting perfection and craftsmanship - then this set is not for you. You need to shell out top dollar for that - i.e. $200 plus minimum. So don't expect intricate carvings and symmetrical toning of pieces. Its a regular - play with it every day - doesn't matter if you drop the pieces a few times - kind of chess set. And it will last well worth its price. 4Great quality set for the very low cost.Over all the set I received is an excellent buy for the price. Keep in mind it is possible to purchase much finer Chess sets than this one, but also at a much higher cost. I think that this set is a great first set or one to take out and play without worry of damage. Finish is good quality, again for the price. Minor flaws here and there but nothing that would upset a reasonable person who realizes what they are buying. 5High Quality Board With Average Light ChessmenI bought this set because I wanted to have a wooden board whose squares are exactly same size as the popular green and white rollout mats. The squares for that should be 2.25 inches.I already owner superior wooden pieces to use with this board. For the price that this set is selling for you absolutely cannot get better deal than this set. Even more value if you need a set of chessmen.So for any beginner or for a first set everything with this board is great. But if you expect India made level chessmen this isn't the best set. The chessmen are all of the perfect tournament base size and they do have weights in them. Despite that they are still very light and can slide and fall easily. They do look great and have excellent shape and color. But an experienced owner of chessmen will notice that these are generally poor quality chessmen. The wood is light and you can see the lines or pores where the chessmen were cut in manufacture. They are also not well sealed and lacquered like the $60 and above pieces you could get from India somewhere. That means that when you move your fingers against the chess piece surfaces it will feel porous and uneven, as opposed to smooth, sealed, and lacquered like the really nice ones. (I have seen in videos that Magnus Carlsen and Garry Kasparov used these same pieces when Kasparov was training Carlsen. So they are at least good enough for those guys.)Despite of what is, in my opinion, below average chessmen, the board surface quality and construction is very very good. It actually is made from inlaid wood squares whose natural grain/lines go into different directions on white and black. That is always pleasant to look at. On top of that the surface is covered with brown stain lacquer on black and the perimeter, and white are slightly beige. All of it is covered with coat of some other sealant which almost makes it look like a thin layer of crystallized sugar. You could say it is like a soft amber shine. The surface is also very smooth and all of my different chess sets' pieces slide so smoothly and with so little friction. That's how these boards are supposed to be.WARNING: This is my second board from Polish manufacturer Wegiel. And this one, like the other one, came with an imperfection which is caused by about 1 millimeter of disalignment where the two halves of the board touch. It can be a problem ONLY if you want to seamlessly slide pieces across the center. In my case I wanted a smooth movement across the center line. When I saw this slight imperfection I was able to apply pressure onto the board when it was unfolded and put on flat surface. It became perfectly aligned.This issue has occurred before with a smaller Wegiel board. Sometimes it can be easily corrected and sometimes not so easily. In either case I only recommend you try to put pressure on it if you are skilled and experienced in small construction or woodworking. If you aren't you could break the hinges and to fix it may be difficult without special skill. Just saying this in case you care about that kind of detail. 4UNBELIEVABLE, FANTASTIC CHESS SET AND FOLDING BOARD! A "steal" AT ANY PRICE!! BUY YOURS NOW!!This Set is FABULOUS!! I am GLAD that we were able to Purchase it at a REASONABLE Price! The Wooden Pieces are in fact WEIGHTED! Not Triple Weighted, but "Nicely" weighted! They Fit On the squares Great. The Felting is OK! They are not exactly "smooth", BUT OK!!! The BOARD is UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC! Fits ALL the Pieces WELL in thinly,but adequately made, easily removable FELTED, plastic tray that holds the pieces in place without those silly elastic cords! The Board's FINISH is that of a much more EXPENSIVE Board! S M O O T H as a baby's butt! THIS BOARD AND SET ARE REMARKABLE FOR THE PRICE! The Overall weight is Excellent! A bit heavy for a "90 lb weakling"! The Board is in fact U.S.C.F. Authorized as well as the pieces! IT IS AS BIG AS A REGULATION BOARD! IF THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR STOP READING THIS & BUY 1 OR 2 now! I AM IN FACT QUITE HAPPY WITH THIS PURCHASE! CAN YOU TELL? HOPE TO PLAY WITH THIS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME! BUY YOURS A.S.A.P. & ENJOY!! 5Well Pleased..Size of board in relation to piece size was very good..Workmanship was above average.. All pieces had good finish and proportion and were adequately weighted..Board squares were fitted together so no gaps.. All in all pleased with purchase..Strong odor when package was opened.. Odor came from inside inserts that held pieces, but dissipated in a few hours..Manufacturer claims no child labor was used to make this set.. Which I guess is a good thing.. 5Extremely disappointing. My dad has the same board that's almost a decade old and it is in better shape then my new one.Board lines are uneven and looks like there are pencil marks where they cut the Board?! The board does not lay flat on surface instead there is a slight hump in the middle meaning that the board itself isn't even. Bottom pads on pieces are uneven and stick out on corners a good millimeter or two. Scratches on multiple places on board and one side even has a chip on the edge! Inside the board the green holder is cracked on the black side and doesn't sit right inside. The black horse pieces do not seem to have been sanded and none of the black wooden pieces have been treated with varnish. Also the black pieces are a darker color than advertised.The only good thing are the white pieces but the pads on the bottom are also not aligned properly being shorter on one end on the piece making the pieces sit "askew". The rook piece in particular has the pad sicking out one side a good 3 millimeters.The wooden board itself doesn't even seem to have been fully "treated". I could expect this kind of board from a 15 year old amateur carpenter, not from a reputable company.I would understand a few minor imperfections as expected of all wooden boards but this product just seems unfinished and incorrectly put together. For 40+ dollars this was quite disappointing experience. 1Fantastic Set For Its Price!While I have seen photos and reviews claiming that their set arrived with misplaced felts, poorly-crafted pieces, unaligned board hinges, etc; this was not the case with mine. As you can appreciate in the photos, everything looks great; I even added a lip-balm container for size comparison.The board is large, professionally crafted and labeled; the outside of it does not feel cheap at all, the inside might, but it is functional with its plastic compartment for the pieces that keeps them from bouncing around and getting damaged.The pieces are beautiful, very nice colors and the sizes and proportions work; they could weigh more, sure, but they are not going to be knocked down by a sneeze. And, you could, if you felt so strongly about it, add some more weight, I am sure.As the title of my review implies, for its price range, $50, you're likely not going to get better. 5Very happy with this nicely made chess setYears ago my older son bought a 10 inch Polish made Wiegel magnetic travel chess set while on vacation. I was impressed with its affordable price and really enjoyed the handmade vibe of the set.Recently my younger son decided to purchase a larger set and after looking at 15 inch sets priced in the mid 20's we decided to spend more to be sure we got something we liked. We love this set, it's nice to play with over 2 inch squares and large weighted pieces. The craftsmanship exceeds what we expected at this price point. I think negative reviews here regarding the quality either didn't get a set built to the standard we received or they are perfectionists with demands out of line with the price the set is offered at. Wiegel's website has a photo gallery of their factory if you're interested in seeing how the boards and pieces are made.I'll come back to post a photo of our set. 5
