A lifesaverOur baby screamed in the car at night... non stop. We were ready to stop driving at night but then we bought this (in blue) and now she has no issues in the car at night. We recently put it in her room during nap time (which we were also struggling with) and now she drifts off to sleep with ease. It reads stories, sings songs, plays music, and has nature noises. You set the timer for 15, 30, or 45 minutes and it soothes them with noise and projects multicolored stars around the room. The best part, which we just realized with the naps, of baby cries, it turns back on to soothe them. We now use it at night too... truly a lifesaver. I just ordered the pink one to keep in my car, my husband will get the blue one we ve had, and the bear one will stay in the nursery! 5Love the hippoThis is the best singing toy we have for our 2 month old daughter. And you can't beat the price!We love the stars; I don't think they are too bright, but we have a night light in our room. We also love the music- it has lullabies, nursery rhymes, nature songs. I learnt some of these songs and rhymes and i am also singing them to my daughter. It would be great if they repeated themselves like twice (I agree they are short), but this is not a deal breaker for us. I don't think the lady's voice is creepy, like another reviewer mentioned. We find it sweet and pleasant. The volume is adjustable, which is great, as I am a light sleeper. And it does restart when it hears a strong noise or baby crying, which is a plus. Highly recommend! 5Stimulating, not relaxing! And creepy voice! So bad!!!Who in the world would thinks it s a good idea for some random lady to start talking to your kid in the middle of the night?!?! NOOOOOO! So very many things wrong with this item. Whoever designed it has no idea how sleep works. Instead of choosing a song and having it repeat, it plays 64 snippets of songs, so there s always something new coming on for kiddo to listen to, many of which are WAY too up-tempo for sleep time. And the first four songs have a creepy random lady singing them. So when the cry activation thing comes on in the middle of the night, a creepy voice starts singing to my kid through the speaker. Um, NO. Just, NO. The nature songs aren t a good alternative because they also are very short, and one of them is dripping water. Who came up with this?? Just don t buy it. Just don t. Unfortunately I don t have a better alternative with a cry activation to recommend. We have and love the Summer Infant elephant, but it doesn t have cry activation, so when my 3-year-old wakes up in the night we have to trudge in there and then it back on. Looks like we re going to get the Hatch, though I d rather not have to look at my phone in the night to turn the sound back on, it s got to be better than this insane, creepy hippo. 1Make your nights easier, buy this!I like everything about this item. The star pattern projected by the multi-colored LEDs is nice, especially when it is set to cycle through the colors. I'm able to go into my daughter's room without need any additional lighting, the blue LED gives off just enough light to see everything without being harsh and disturbing her sleep. I'm a fan of the sounds and the combinations it puts out, my wife calls the woman's voice "creepy". Sometimes we'll have both light and sound going at bedtime, other times she'll leave the lights on and use another machine for the sounds. Its response to crying is pretty reliable and has definitely helped soothe my daughter back to sleep. Batteries (I put new ones in right away) seem to be lasting a good long while considering how much it's used. Couldn't be happier with this little guy! 5which is great. But after the timer goes offThis would get 5 stars if there was one way to turn off a certain feature. This hippo when "on" has a timer, which is great. But after the timer goes off, if the baby makes noise for more than 5 seconds, then it comes back on. ALL NIGHT LONG. Which is ok in some aspects but makes this thing eat batteries. I wish there were a way to shut off that feature. IT would get 5 stars if I could. 3Very disappointed for the 2nd time around! When I opened the amazon box, on those 3 items in the box, this toy is what I saw 1st. Because it was exposed & its box is broken & not presentable. Upon checking this toy, I noticed that when I pulled the hippo out of its box gently, it wasn't tied from it. & The WORST thing is the sound & music of this toy or the toy itself, is defective. The "Row row row your boat" song, it kept on repeating but not complete & it's like a broken disk inside a car CD player,for example. I tried all the buttons but it comes back all over again & again & again in the row your boat that seemed stuck on something that the song kept on repeating without completing its lyrics. As what I've said in my 1st comment in another toy that came from you (Amazon), these are my newborn baby's gifts from us parents. So can you please resolve this one AGAIN.Suggestions again Amazon???Can you replace this defective toy? Since you delivered it defective already. 1Fantastic!!!We love this hippo! Our daughter began enjoying this around 2 months of age and it has become an integral part of her falling asleep routine!1) The stars that shine on the ceiling gently change colors, keeping her attention without being distracting or stimulating.2) There are 4 basic sound options - story, song, nature, and combination. Then, depending on how many times you press each button, there are a number of sub-options. For example, the "song" button has options with and without a singing voice, lullaby-type songs, classical songs, etc. This is nice because, like any child's toy, it gets repetitive to adults and stuck in your head. I find that my husband and I prefer different options and love that we have the choice!3) The volume ranges from quite soft to loud.4) The timer has options for 15, 30, and 45 minutes. Fantastic way to not waste batteries.5) Speaking of batteries, we leave the power button in the "on" position out of pure laziness and batteries still last probably 8 weeks. Woohoo! I hate toys that cost more in battery power than they do to purchase. Of course, if you use cheapo batteries you won't get this result, but regular old Duracell seems to be working well for us. We activate it for each nap and then at night time as well as any time she activates it herself.6) The noise activation feature is really neat. It won't activate for quiet noise (cooing, regular baby talk, normal adult voice, etc) so you don't run the risk of waking baby up further if she's just kind of in that in-between stage. It takes a significant noise like a cry or scream to turn on.Over all, we love this thing, see the potential for long term use, and will definitely be putting it on our list of gifts to get expectant moms! 5Love this!!!!This item has been a life saver!! I bought this hoping it would do as said and turn on in the middle of the night if my daughter and it does! I use to have the Motorola camera where I could turn on/off music through the camera and once that went kaput I've been searching for something to replace it. My daughter goes to bed wide-eyed looking at all of the different colors of the stars and it soothes her back to sleep at night.You can choose to set it to a 15, 30 or 45 minute timer and you can also choose to do just the lights or sound. Not sure what everyone's fuss is about, but if your child is constantly waking up through the night and the music is on then of course it's going to run your batteries down! Just make sure to have extra AA batteries.I would recommend this to any parent I know! 5First parenting fail - Didn't think to try new batteries!LOVE this, but this is like my third one, they eventually stop working - music and lights start to skip/flutter until it dies.UPDATE: So I've returned 6 of these thinking they're defective because the lights eventually flicker and the music skips...I never considered changing the BATTERIES. Hoping this fixes the issue, if so - I wish the batteries lasted longer. I do run 2 45min cycles per night with it, so I'm sure that's the problem. Whoops! 4very happy with thisOverall, very happy with this. The 60 song variety is great, and the projected color-changing stars are nice. The variety of options is good, and volume control dial is especially nice. We like that this plays music for so long - longer than similar products. My 2yo daughter likes to see the stars, but asks for the to be turned off after a minute because they're pretty bright. She does like to sit in a dark closet and see it light up.Our only complaint was that the unit turns itself back on if it hears crying - music and lights. I guess this would be ok if we could control what would happen, but it seems to aggravate the situation and keep our 2yo up even more. To prevent the unit from starting on it's own at night - I opened up the unit (see photo) and disconnected the red wire from the back of the gold disc (microphone). The leads are marked as Speaker on the PCB, but it seems like it's only a microphone, and has not negatively affected the sound quality. Now the unit does not start back up if my daughter makes any noise at night, and we can start it manually if we deem it necessary. 4
