Customer Reviews

Handy Reading enhancersI bought 3 cheap reader enhancers on Amazon as I have Macular Degeneration and was really pleased that I now have these.Just after having bought these, Later I was taken to a specialised shop in Seattle for vision, as I wanted to find out if there were other contraception s that maybe I should also get, but a similar range, with maybe 1 item I had missed, and some way more expensive items which I will comment on later.I bought 3 items, all at a great price between 8 and 12 $ each.:1) Carson Multi-Power LED Lighted Pocket Magnifier (PM-33) 8$2) UltraOptix LED Lighted Folding Magnifier 3x 12$3) Mighty Bright Rigid Page Magnifier ( rigid full page) 8$The first 2 are similar, with the Carson pocket magnifiers probably being my preference as it is much lighter, thinner, and fits neatly in a pocket ( my breast pocket),At last at a restaurant, I can easily flip it out and read the menu, even in dim lighting conditions. I am super pleased. The Carsons also has a more modern look, as it is not so obvious you have a magnifying glass as the Ultraoptix . The Ultra optix folding Magnifier his much bigger, thicker, and while the lense is way bigger, it actually does not make that much of a difference. Maybe if you only had the 2 (Carson & Ultra Optix) , then for reading the bigger Ultraoptix would be good, but read on.For details, the Carosns switch is smaller and more difficult to get put ON by accident, but it does have special batteries, which cant be re-charged, so may be more expensive in the long run. Will have to wait and see how long the batteries last. Not too sure if I will use the 2 additional small higher magnifying screens on Carsons often,( at one side ), but if you are not getting a small character, for which you wish a greater magnification it is right there, and you don t have to lift the magnifying, and hence the light does not go dimmer, (for MD a good light is essential). The Mightly Bright rigid page Magnifier is just great when you wish to read a magazine or a book, as you can see several columns at the same time, and if you are a fast reader, you can skip down paragraphs easily without getting lost. There is no light on the rigid full page magnifier, (uses a Fresnel system) so you need to get good lighting, which is not a problem at home. It is very light, but still does a great job.( I am delighted with IKEA s small let light for about 12 CAD each!, a powerful and concentrated light on a flexible tube about 18 in long)I was concerned about scratching the big flat plastic sheet, but actually just put in inside the pages of a magazine, and bingo, it is protected. No need to have a special cover.Next and future wishes.I saw Carson ezRead Visual Aide Magnifier (DR-200) at 73 $, but it is not wireless, so having wires linked to say an Ipad or tablet is not on, and it have the wrong connections for a tablet! But am pretty sure that soon we will se something come.I also say in the specialised shop fancy system that looked like a camera above a PC screen, which then was linked to the screen and you could magnify at the level you wished. ( you have the page flat on the desk, and see the text on screen, BUT the price was horrendous! 2000$.A straight small digital camera cost 100$ and a fixture to the screen would do the job at way less!!There were also small 3inx 7 in screens similar to a smart phone in apparence, which worked like a digital camera with a huge screen, and a few add-ons like convert a black print on white paper to yellow text on blue background, but these were also in the 500 + $ range, not that cost/benefit enough for me.Finally, in the shop, there was also a magnifying glass similar to UltraOptix, but where the distance to the page was fixed by a box which you place on the paper and slide along.. This is not something you would want to take out of the house, but may decrease the arm fatigue of holding a small light glass at the right distance from what you are reading. It was also much more that the 10 $ range. 4Smartly EngineeredThis product has it all and makes a lot of sense the way it is put together. It was delivered in bomb proof shipping package as everthing is these days. It was everything it said it was. It has a bright LED, controlled by an easy to reach thumb operated switch that stays on or off. The switch was covered by a snap in plastic door which is the first thing you remove and stick in a drawer somewhere to be forgotton forever. The handle, as advertised, sits flush against the side or swings out to any angle that works for you. The battery compartment is way cool. You pull on the handle, the cover slides off and right there is the AAA battery assembly. Couldn't be easier. No stupid battery compartment door that falls off or has to be taped on. The magnification is great. I didn't do any testing of the magnification claims but it was plenty for my needs. My wife and I had to ID some tiny pills and she said it was worth every penny. And it was less than 13 bucks! 5GoodThe description reads "Hi-Power optical quality 2" x3 lens with 3X power and ultra bright while LED light for sharper images". I wouldn't go as far to use all those superlatives, but the thing works fine. It is sufficient for all those daily tasks that require some magnification, not for continuous reading, it fits well into your right hand, and the On/Off switch is conveniently located on the handle. Note to lefthanders: if you use this the most natural way, the bright LED will shine in your face, sorry... something to consider perhaps. The insert indicates 1 AAA battery "included", the package shows "not included" and there is indeed no battery included (no big deal to me). 4Adjustable handle, LED lighting, 3X magnification.I am finding this 3x lighted magnifier from UltraOptix to be a very handy tool for helping me when my prescription glasses aren't quite enough magnification. Like when I'm looking up the spelling of a word in a paperback dictionary or trying to read that awful fine print on an information sheet that comes with a medication. There is one AAA battery required to operate the LED light and that is placed in the handle. You must supply that battery yourself. I really like that I am the one who controls the angle of the handle instead of it being fixed in place. This magnifier did not come with any type of protective cover and that isn't a problem for me since it stays on my desk, but if you want to fold the handle in all the way and take this with you I think some type of protective pouch would be required. I do not find any distortion along the edges of this lens, but I also don't try to use it for reading for prolonged periods of time. According to the insert sheet included with the magnifier I will never have to worry about replacing the LED bulb because it will probably last for 100,000 hours. Now that's a long lasting bulb! 4Not 3XMagnifier is not 3X but 2X. 1Good for labels, not for reading booksI like this one. It magnifies well and clearly in the center. The light (which can be flicked on/off), makes a tremendous difference in one's ability to see. It's not heavy. It's great for reading labels in the kitchen, directions on medicine bottles, etc. The glass is too small to be practical for reading books though. I tried and found that it made me nauseated when I constantly had to move it side to side to read an entire line of text in a book. So, consider what you want to use it for before buying. 4ultraoptix led lighted folding magnifierMy Dad has macular degeneration so needs a magnifier with light to see most printing. This has been the most sucessful product he has used, but the wiring in the handle seems to break from a lot of usage. He has had at least two others of the same and runs into the same problem each time so the light won't work when the wire breaks. I purchased three of the magnifiers this time so that I would qualify for the free shipping but the company sent them to my home in Missouri instead of his home in Colorado, so we ended up paying for shipping anyway. I wasn't pleased with that. 3The light is quite nicely bright, and the lense magnifies wellThe light is quite nicely bright, and the lense magnifies well. It is decidedly designed for right handed use, which makes it difficult to hold it (if ussing the light) with the left hand so you can use your right hand to press buttons or other while magnified. All in all, I am quite pleased with the purchse. A lense of this type will have a central focus point, that is to be expected, but the qulity of the magnification is what is most important to me. I find the quality to be quite good.I suffer, by the way, from Macular Degeneration, and have purchased this item for that reason. I has been a decided help, and fits well into a pocket for quick access, when in the kitchen or trying to read the labels of proscription bottles or other containers. It carries my seal of approval!!! 5Excellent QualityMy eyes are really bad, so this addition helps a lot. I wish it was for left handed people also, because I like to write with my right hand and hold the glass in my left hand. The quality is very good, smooth edges, hand swings and folds for storage. The light switch is mounted at a very handy location. Handle has a nice smooth feeling, The glass is thick so it most likely can't break when falling. The shape is super, although I wish it were 1/4 bigger in circumference. Which equates to 1/2" total width and length. If your kids get a hold of it, it won't break. 5The Best for ReadingI have been using this magnifying glass a lot for the past few days. I have several magnifying glasses for different things. But, for reading, this one is the best one that I have. I do a lot of reading and sometimes my vision gets strained. When that happens the magnifying glass is one of my tools. The rectangular shape is perfect for any type of reading (books, maps, magazines, etc.). It has a good weight if you have to hold it for an extended period of time (I do not have any problems with my hands like arthritis, for instance). I want to mention the LED light. I almost did not get this product because of a previous review on how the LED light was left on by accident because it was easy to do so and this was a problem for that particular purchaser. Since I now have this magnifying glass I do not understand the complaint. I am assuming we both have the same product. The light switch on my magnifying glass is not "easy" to turn on. It's not by any means hard to do but you need more than brushing it with a finger to do it. When I am holding it in my hand it is above my right index finger. I have to move my thumb over and above my index finger to turn it on. Maybe somebody could have a difficult time but I do not. I only mention this because that one "most helpful critical review" almost made me continue looking. The only thing that would make this magnifying glass better is some kind of bag to hold it or carry it. Other than that, the product is great. It was shipped promptly. I can't say anything more. 5
