Customer Reviews

Great kit for science class or science clubI bought a couple of these kits for my Science Club students to use in their mineralogy study. The mineral specimens were approximately 1 inch in length, and were in good condition upon arrival. They are packed in open cells and jostle around a bit in transit, but they have numbered stickers on them to identify each mineral, so you can figure out which one is which and reposition them. The stickers do not tend to stick very well, and I replaced a couple of them. I like the fact that these minerals are in their natural state and not polished or cut. Instructions come with the kit, and there is a chart which identifies the hardness and streak color of each mineral. The kit also contains a scratch plate, nail, and plastic magnifying glass. I added other items from a Rock Mineral Test Kit (also available on Amazon at a reasonable price), and had a wonderful little mineral identification/test project for my students. 5Fantastic buy for the moneybought these for a rocks class I taught. Some of the rocks are smaller than what is in the picture on the front, but i don't think it detracts from the total package at all. The kids loved them!! This is a great resource to have and I would definitely buy this again. One note though: Don't expect the magnifying class it comes with to actually do anything. It's really worthless as a magnifying glass. This didn't bother me as I brought my own to class anyway. It does however, have a nice little ceramic plate to test streak color on, along with a steel nail.Additionally, I made my own little Moh's hardness testing kit to accompany this box that easily fit inside it. I went to the dollar store and purchased some glass decorative marbles (one side is flat) and a small bag of magnets. All in all, inside the plastic bag that comes with this kit, I was able to put it's own ceramic plate, the nail and added a penny, a marble, and a paper clip (just to have one more magnetic item for fun.) It all fit inside the bag in this box and was a great success. Fabulous resource! 5Fantastic for homeschool!I bought this for my home classroom, & it's the perfect size for my kids to see the rocks & examine them. There are plenty of samples and it comes with a small info sheet. To solve the problem of the numbers falling off we just took a picture when it arrived so we will always know which rock is which. The magnifying glass is a cheap one, but it's nice that it's included and we have plenty higher quality ones to use. We will be buying the mineral one as well. 5Small kit but lots to experienceWe homeschool our 13 year-old and needed a kit for the mineral id lab in Earth Science. JC looooved this lab! There was enough variety in this kit that he even ended up being able to test for minerals that glowed in UV light, minerals that reacted to acid, and so forth. This exceeded my expectations for such a small kit. 5TS Mineral Science KitI was a bit worried after reading most of the reviews here but needing this for homeschool and not willing or able to spend a fortune on the bigger kits, I decided to give these a try. I am glad that I did. I ordered both the mineral and rock kits and found both kits perfect so much so that I submitted customer images to amazon to show the quality of what I received. The samples of the minerals were all a good size, most being approx 1 inch x 1 inch but a few being a little bit smaller. Based on the dimensions listed in the product description, I don't see how anyone could expect more than that. None of my samples were missing and none of the stickers were off or missing either. I am very pleased with this product. 5Specimens are tinyA good selection of minerals. It was a struggle for this novice to match the 15 to their descriptions and when I did I wondered if I had determined hardness correctly. The box is small and the specimens tiny. I believe my photos show that the samples shown on the box are larger than the ones supplied. 3Good learning aid!I bought the Rock and the mineral set together. The same review goes for both the sets.Pros:Each specimen is about an inch in size. Just the right size to examine it.There are 5 different rock samples for each type of rock, i.e. there are 5 different igneous rocks, 5 different sedimentary rocks or 5 different metamorphic rocks.Samples are packed very well and laid out in a plastic tray as shown.Comes with a detailed list of what samples are included.Cons:Some samples shown in the picture are not in the box. Makes kids a bit disappointed to not see couple of the bright colored ones missing.Over All, it is a great set for kids to learn about rocks and minerals. 4TS Rock Science KitI was a bit worried after reading most of the reviews here but needing this for homeschool and not willing or able to spend a fortune on the bigger kits, I decided to give these a try. It fit right into their homeschool curriculum. Reading about rocks, their formation, and their characteristics is helped so much by being able to touch them. The magnifying glass is pretty much a waste of time a piece of junk, so I will ignore this. The set is perfect for learning these rocks, however, including 5 specimens of each type as follows, labeled with some basic information on each:Igneous:1. Obsidian2. Granite3. Basalt4. Scoria5. RhyoliteSedimentary:6. Shale7. Calcareous tufa8. Sandstone9. Conglomerate10. LimestoneMetamorphic:11. Slate12. Marble13. Quartzite14. Gneiss15. ShiftI do wish that there was a bit more listed on where the rocks are from, their composition, and their characteristics than is included in the one page printout. However, the paper is nicely done, and the real good thing about this set is the set of 15 rocks. 5A good starter kit for young rock collectors.I bought this kit for my son who has suddenly taken an interest in rocks, minerals, and gem stones. He'd bought a different kit previously and, while he liked it, he found that he had a hard time really determining which rocks he had in his kit because they didn't seem to match the pictures on the back of the box. And then, we found this kit and the big plus is that it takes the mystery out of figuring out which rocks you have because each rock comes numbered and corresponds to one of the numbers in the identification guide. He loves it! This kit came with 15 rock specimens, a magnifying glass, and an identification guide. The identification guide is pretty basic but does provide a good start for someone just getting into rock collecting. My son especially liked the page of the guide that shows the names of the rocks and some specific information about each one. The box that the rocks come in is a good one for keeping them in for storage - of course my son had to have a special "rock sorting box" but this one would suffice if you don't have a picky rock collector. We are very pleased with this product and it's made our little rock collector a happy one! 5
