Customer Reviews

Extremely challengingThis puzzle was more challenging than we expected. We've done a few Van Gogh puzzles, so we expected quite a bit of challenge, but this was the first time we tried a 2000 piece Van Gogh. The pieces are extremely small and after about a month of staring at them until we had headaches, we finally rolled it up and put it away. I think we're going to get it out again soon, but it's so big we have to take up our entire dining room table. There's no question it's well-made, but you should know before you purchase it that you might want to start with a few easier 2000 piece puzzles and not jump right to this one. 4Still working on Starry NightThis is an incredibly hard puzzle and not for the inexperienced puzzler. My dad and I started this puzzle a year ago and admittedly we only work on it when we are together, approx. once a month, but it has really challenged us. Between visits we store this puzzle under my bed and unfortunately it was attacked by our very naughty rabbit. She ate one corner off and nibbled some of the edge pieces, so I purchased this puzzle from Amazon to replace the eaten and nibbled on pieces. To our dismay, the puzzle has a different die cut and the pieces wont fit. We have contacted Buffalo games, the company that makes the puzzle and we haven't had a response yet. As we only have approx. 500 pieces left to finish the puzzle, we really don't want to start over. I'll update this post later.Overall, though, this is a excellent, challenging puzzle. I now understand that Van Gogh did not wash his brushes between strokes, as there is pieces of various colors everywhere in this puzzle.Update 2/2013Well, we never did hear from Buffalo games, but my son's girlfriend had the same puzzle with an almost identical die cut. Anyway, it did work out. We completed this puzzle and it looks great. Quite the challenge. We're doing the Sistine Chapel next. 5Hard puzzle!I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles, have spent some time looking for a harder one, and this one fit the bill. Many of the pieces look similar, such as the 350 or so brown pieces that make up the cypress tree on the left, and the 900 pieces of purple, yellow and white striped ones of the night sky. Most of the puzzle must be worked using shape clues primarily after the colors have been sorted. In assembling the puzzle, I get an idea about Van Gogh's eye for color balance, line balance and imagination, so I think it is educational, even if it is not an exact reproduction. I really enjoyed making it. Cons include that many pieces appear to fit together, but must be held up to the light to note the fit of the connecting faces. It is possible to get mis-fits that look fairly convincing at first. Also, the pieces tend to stick together (male end into female) and separating them can lift the surface from the pasteboard backing. 4Very challenging puzzleI bought this puzzle for my girlfriend who absolutely loved it. However, after working on it for 2 months almost every day she was unable to get more than 70% of this puzzle done, so it is very challenging (a plus in my opinion). In particular, many of the piece of the sky appear to be almost identical, so that was the part that we failed to finish. Either way, this is a great puzzle that provided hours of enjoyment. 5Christmas Present from Hell (but like, a good hell)I bought this present for my boyfriend -we both really love doing puzzles- and he loved it immediately. Neither one of us had done a puzzle to this size before, because well, how many pieces could 2000 pieces be? Really?Well, friends, it's January 18th and we still aren't finished with this d*** puzzle. I have stared at each piece separately and separated them into color categories, stripes, shapes, etc. Since it's a painting, there's no straight edges or patters that can give you the slightest clues as to where they go. We are a little over half done, but the only pieces that are left look EXACTLY alike. We're debating if we want to keep it or burn it after we're done. There is a fellow couple who thinks THEY could take on the puzzle. HAH! Challenge accepted.Anywho, you should DEFINITELY buy this puzzle. FUN TIMES ARE AHEAD! 5Hardest puzzle you will EVER doOnly buy this puzzle if, like me, you are an inveterate, stubborn, insistent lover of hard jigsaw puzzles. This is the single hardest jigsaw puzzle I have ever done. I have been working on it off and on for five weeks, and have only about 25% of it done.Be aware that the puzzle itself has much darker and murkier colors than the pictures on the box and the enclosed fold out mini-poster. Many areas are very similar in color and direction of image, which makes sorting and identifying areas where pieces might go much harder. My advice is, do the moon, the stars, and the central horizontal bright section across the middle, then the tree on the left. That is hard enough, from there it becomes a real slog. I finally tried sorting the pieces roughly into five piles, based on dark to light color, and that helped me finally resume progress in the upper left corner and the lower right. The pieces are cleanly cut, and you can count on precise fit, and all seams line up. Trust me, if that were not the case, this puzzle would simple be impossible, because on technique you will have to resort to is searching for pieces with specific shape and tab or hole configurations, matching by shape. And you will run into pieces which seem to fit perfectly, but DON'T, thus throwing you for a while to you catch your error.I gave this a four mainly because the color reproduction on the box cover and the insert poster just do not match the actually puzzle in tone and hue, so it is harder to use them as guide to locating where pieces might go. 4Very challenging.Bought it as a gift for myself after getting out of a relationship. It did occupy most of my time.Got really frustrated a few times, but the hard work will pay off eventually. 5Love Buffalo Games PuzzlesIn Chicago Target and KMart carry Buffalo Games puzzles, but I could not find Starry Night in a brick and mortar store. Bought on Sunday, arrived on Tuesday, and it cost about $0.50 less buying it online (damn Cook County sales taxes). Have done other Buffalo puzzles, always enjoyed the picture and piece quality. Will definitely buy the next 2k piece puzzle via Amazon. 5Incredibly Difficult Puzzle, but not for good reasonsAs other reviewers have pointed out, this puzzle is incredibly challenging. My single biggest complain is the low resolution image they expanded for the puzzle. Every single piece is *blurry*. When Wikimedia Commons has a 30,000 x 23,756 pixel image available, Buffalo should have figured out a way to license a higher quality image, or kept this as a 500 piece puzzle, not 2,000.If a subject is blurry, I'm happy to have a blurry puzzle. When a subject is one of the most famous and recognizable oil paintings in the world, I would like to see the finished puzzle look like an oil painting, not a blown up 1,280x960 jpeg. After putting together about 10% of this and sorting by color, we gave up.If you're a hardcore jigsaw masochist, you will love this, but if you appreciate the content of a finished puzzle, stay away. 2Two StarsColor seems to be a little off. It more purplish than blue. Had to return it. 2
