Customer Reviews

Neat kit. Overview of features and Pro vs.ConA gift for 10+ kids, but many age groups might enjoy this. If for a kid, you'll most likely need an adult to help, and some projects REQUIRE adult supervision. Basic function is that the circuits snap into each other using a plastic grid. Instructions include placement and the order in which the circuits should be added. This version centers on LEDs and music, and has different types of switches to activate the LEDs.To me, the key feature is a piece called the "color organ," which allows for hookup to a music-playing device (AUX cable IS included). Some experiments set up the LEDs to "follow" the music. The color organ has an IN and OUT jack. If you use only the IN jack with your music device then you'll need to connect the included speaker within the circuitry (instructions will guide you). The OUT jack can be used to hook the circuit up to a stereo system. If you want to play your music device through the IN and also Output to a stereo, you'll need your own [additional] AUX cable. The instruction manual is very detailed and is mostly written in layman's terms. It gives overviews of electricity, circuitry, and light. Some projects are based off preceding projects and only involve swapping out a few pieces, but still this counts toward the total 182 experiments. For those interested in the specs, check out the company website for manuals and parts lists.PROS-well-organized packaging-instructions explain the logic behind each experiment-parts seem durable-upgrade kits and spare parts available on Elenco website for fair prices.CONS-project instructions are single pictures of overhead views. Some could be more kid-friendly and broken up into step-by-step pics.-the plastic light tower does not stay in place very well-the speaker is low output and may sound grainy when hooked up to a music device. 4... our 4th Snap Circuits kit and we were not disappointed. Bought this for my 5 year old and ...This is our 4th Snap Circuits kit and we were not disappointed. Bought this for my 5 year old and he loves it. It is a little advanced for him, but with minimal help from his 7 year old brother or myself, he can get it.This has loads of lights and a fan motor (that you can make "take off" if you choose). You can also hook your phone or other music/sound player to this, although the speaker is less barely "okay" quality.I have had, in the past, defective parts, and the company offered free replacements for them. 5Great idea with such promise but my kit is plagued by poor build quality. This product had great potential with such promises but unfortunately the packaging didn't hold up to well in transit and the build quality isn't all that. Since this was a Christmas gift imagine the disappointment after within hours a couple of parts broke and I had to use packing tape to keep the box structure sturdy to hold the kit. The first item that didn't fair well was the green propeller for the first set of UFO instructions, the propeller is really cheap plastic and the mold looked like it had some excess plastic on it and there was appeared to be a small crack but I figured it was no big deal. One flight and it landed wrong and that was the end of that item. Replacements per the instructions in the manual for replacements off of the website are only $2.00 but it is $9.00 to ship it! The second item to not fair well (or maybe contents settled in transit) was one of the battery packs, as I was putting batteries in the unit the coil sprung out and while I can gently set it back in there it doesn't stay attached when one removes the battery. The connectors for some of the circuits also don't stay snapped together very well, it is like some of them have a little bigger opening than others. I have heard such great reviews about these products and some of the labs are genuinely cool (like the fiber optic labs) but at this point I'm not sure what to do as it is probably only 50% usable of what I thought we were getting due to the build quality. Again great ideas and I'm sure others have had better luck than me and I understand that all products are not 100% perfect all of the time but this was a Christmas gift and I'm feeling a little bit like we wasted some money here on this one. 1Great STEM toy for girls and boysMy 8 year old daughter just loves it. I'm a mechanical engineer and am so happy to find a great product that promotes STEM. Some pink and purple colored products, marketed and targeted specifically to girls, completely fail in terms of quality, design, and play value. A good well designed toy will appeal to both boys and girls alike, regardless of colors used. The set comes nicely organized and packaged. Instructions are clear. You can get in and start building the circuits right away. It doesn't matter that you kid doesn't know what a 100 ohm resister or voltage are, as you can cover that later. What matters most is, after following the diagram and checking your work, the fun of seeing what you've built run. We've only done about 8 of the projects and with many more to come, Snap Circuits will provide lots of hours of fun. The only reason I gave a four star rating is that the speaker is really cheap, barely audible, and adjusting the pot. did not increase volume. Other than that I highly recommed this toy. 4Fun and educational kit with disappointing soundGot this for my 10 year old daughter. Wasn't here favorite gift but we've gotten a few uses out of it. It didn't hold my 5 year old's attention past the first two projects. And my 10 year old wasn't initially thrilled until we got past the basics. Part of this may have been my initial insistence on briefly reviewing the instructions, and attempting to instill some modicum of education into the experience. They didn't care much for the explanation of what the components actually did but enjoyed snapping them into place and flipping the switch to activate the projects. The 10 year old even took a video of the lights and sound project and posted it to her Instagram. This alleviated my worries that she was just humoring me. :) Both kids enjoyed the fiber optic lights and the egg light and were impressed they were able to plug their phones and tablets into what they built. Therein lies the removal of one star. The performance of the speaker on the kit is abysmal. I didn't expect Wilson Audio sound, but there speaker was pretty anti-climactic when the heavily distorted and low volume sound came out. 4Great Concept ....... Poor Quality JunkThought this was a great idea for my 6 year old as he is a budding engineer. We received the kit as a gift for his B-day and it was what he immediately wanted to open. There were missing parts and the power source has a soldered breaker that was permanently open. Looks rugged but is made in China junk!!! 1FUN, EDUCATIONAL, AND EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SUPPORTYou cannot go wrong with Snap Circuits. They are extremely fun and extremely educational. I can not recommend them enough. My daughter was particular drawn to this set.But what is really impressive is their customer service! Here is a review I wrote for the Snap Circuit rover some time ago, when the most expensive component failed:We love this toy. My daughter has spent many hours assembling the various rover variations covered in the accompanying manual. I highly recommend it for the educational component alone; it is also fun. But the real reason I am writing this review is because one of our components just stopped working. I called the company. "Jerry" took my information and said he'd send it right out. When I pointed out that I hadn't paid for the replacement part yet, he responded, "We support our products." This despite the fact that we've had this rover for many months! I mean, a free replacement part... Actually supporting the product... I about fell over 5It's a great idea, but poor quality controlIt's a great idea, but poor quality control. We have had a number of pieces having connectivity problems (i.e. the circuit starts working when you press random connection points). It's not 1 particular piece, but a number of pieces and it's impossible to determine which piece is faulty. I e-mailed the company directly asking for a replacement, no one responded my e-mail. I called them number of times and nobody picks up the phone. I'm really disappointed because the reviews are great, product is amazing from an idea perspective, but execution is poorly done (at least in my case). The speaker also does not sound good at all, it is barely audible. Some of the projects simply didnt work (and this may be due to the faulty parts, I dont know). 1Fun and Educational Toy for Kids. Missing Parts.I bought two of these for a weekend electronics play date. I bought them both new, and they were sealed from the manufacturer, but on opening them, one had all the parts loose in the box (all the parts were there, though) and the other one was neatly packaged, but missing all of the 3-snap wires which are important to every project. Looks like replacements are easy (and free) to request from the website. However I am super annoyed that I bought two kits, and both had packaging issues. The kids didn't care about loose parts and were fine with sharing, and had a fun time building circuits. My daughter is 9 and her friend is 11. It seems like a good toy for kids in this age range. My daughter needed some supervision and help, although with a little experience she probably won't need it anymore. There is a lot to read, and they were excited to get started and got annoyed with my reading, so I ended up skipping most of it and just got to building circuits from the diagrams. The parts really simplify circuit-building and the visual diagrams/instructions were excellent. This kit starts with some simple circuits that illuminate LED lights that are immediately easy to achieve, and then kinda goes up and down in complexity rather abruptly through the 100+ projects. We did about a dozen of them and the kids were eager to go off-script and experiment. The spinning propeller blades (my daughter called them drones) were especially fun. They had about an hour and a half of playing with circuits before they moved on to other toys. I did circuits with my daughter again the next night, including the sound parts that let you play music from your cellphone (tablet in our case) and we played with our kits for well over an hour, and she was still interested in it when I called it quits for bedtime.Overall, I think this was a lot of fun and I appreciate the educational aspects of this toy. I think we should have started with the basic kit, because I think this kit is meant to build on the knowledge and skills you learn in earlier kits and it didn't seem like this kit explained basic electrical/electronic concepts. Hard to properly judge it since we didn't read everything. I expect that we will continue to get lots of fun out of it as there are a ton more projects to do and my daughter seems happy to redo things she already knows. I also want to mention that I am impressed with the fiber-optic communication that this kit demonstrates with diodes, fiber optic cable, and a phototransistor. I intend to buy more Snap Circuits products -- although I am worried about packaging problems with the maker, because it reads like I have already hit the lifetime limit of 3 free "replacement parts" per customer with the very first kit that was missing 3 parts. This will probably be a lesser problem as we get more kits and wind up with some redundancy. 4Great fun for my young scientistGreat fun for my young scientist! Bought this for my eight-year old and it was definitely his favorite birthday gift. He received it over two months ago and it is still in constant use. The accompanying book is easy for him to navigate and follow the plans to build circuits and he can make his own variations. Love that the pieces are clearly marked and that the original box, while not super sturdy, does work well for keeping things all organized. Certainly educational as he can tell me why certain ways of putting the circuits together will or will not work. Also, the symbols used on the pieces and in the book are the same as you would expect to find in real electrical diagrams he might encounter in the future. 5
