Customer Reviews

You never know. Better have one...I used to have the Radio Shack unit, which was discontinued, as a forerunner of the whole Radio Shack chain sinking slowly but surely...The Radio Shack unit had a little separate magnifier at the end, - that was the part I really used a lot, until my wife was cleaning without her glasses...I wanted to replace that little magnifier, but this unit looked so well made (a better implementation than the RS) that I bought this - just to have it. It now has a led light and that is like stepping into the 21st century from the 20th... Very satisfied with it.For the magnifier see my other purchases. 5Four stars for performance vs. priceIt's true that this cheap scope has its problems: the "optics" are not refined and the fit-and-finish is below par (the metallic stickers are not flat and not parallel to the sides). But at eight bucks, and for the purpose and to the degree that it serves, this scope is pretty... awesome. It's for my 6 y/o son, who loves to investigate things. Win.The scope is labeled "60x-100x", and it certainly appears to have that level of magnification. I have looked at flour bugs on our counter (!), and these little dots of insects can be seen in detail under this scope. You can even see the compound structure of the eyes. This scope can see the dots of a print magazine with no problem. As I said, the optics are not refined and the image will appear as slightly hazy and unevenly focused. I'm happy to report that the focus mechanism is easy to operate, as is the magnification-changer, which is a slider.I was hoping to get the scope in the first picture, but instead I got the one in the following pictures. But it works great, considering the price.Seriously, if you find a better scope near this price, let me know in the comments. 4Works well, might magnify too muchThese aren't lab quality. but you knew that. They are pretty good as older kids toys. I say pretty good because the lowest magnification is too high for an impatient for a younger kid, and it is hard to explain to a younger child what they are looking at because even print text is magnified almost to the point where it is unrecognizable. However, the image quality is relatively good (for the price), the focus is easy enough for an adult to set, and the built in light works great (would be 2x awesome if ti were an LED, but its not). All in all still a good buy if your kid is a little older or uncharacteristically patient/coordinated for their age. Having to interact with your kid as they use them might be seen as an asset anyway :) 3Not the best microscope in the world, but it's portable, it works, no complaints for the price.A lot of paralax, images don't always focus well,.. the zoom doesn't appear to increase magnification much. All in all, it works well for what it is,.. and the kids had fun with it. Remembering that it is a 6 dollar microscope,.. I don't even know how they got it to work as well as it does at that price point. So if you have kids,.. and want them to get involved with examining the world around them with microscopes, and don't want to worry if it breaks,.. buy this. It works,.. there are little things here and there that are annoying when compared to the real deal microscopes out there,.. but that's like comparing a skateboard to a corvette, and then complaining that the skateboard doesn't have air conditioning and a radio. For the price, it's a fair deal, and works for recreational, portable microscope action. 4Poor quality productI wanted to keep this review brief lolPro: good for microscopic slides viewing(for medical doctors/pathologists) ON THE GO!!I mean if you have to view something it will work but don't expect too much.Cons: very cheaply built, the metal panels were detached in the box when I got it with adhesives all over the place. I put the plates back in but the quality was just so poor that I returned it.Also unless you have something on a slide its not as easy to view as the product. As it is light weight the small particles that you try to view usually move here and there making it hard for you to observe them peacefully with detail.I think look for another option, if you can. 2Better than I expectedGot it for some quick looks at broken electronics; stood a 5mm screw on end and was able to move the focus point from the base to the tip - yes, that means the depth of field is short, but you're not limited to purely flat surfaces. (If you've ever noticed that Lego bricks have the word LEGO on top of the studs? at 60x, the "GO" fills the field of view.) Fun for exploring things.Flaws: the battery case barely fits the amazon AA rechargables I put in, not sure if I'll get them out without dismantling it; also, the tip (+ end) needs to go in first, that isn't labelled on the box or the device, and the LED flickers a bit when you first turn it on (but is steady once you're not touching the switch.) Other than that, it's OK. 4Good StuffPurchased this and the SE MW10088UV Pocket Microscope with UV Light both at the same time accidentally. To begin, the SE MW10088UV Pocket Microscope with UV Light is 3 dollars cheaper and shows from the simplicity of the device. The LED equipped microscope not only has a steadier, better focusing zoom. It has a better light as well. Out of the the two I'll be using this scope to accurately inspect that good old sticky sticky for harvesting time. But on the same note The cheaper simpler scope is great for grabbing off the shelf and sticking your face to a leaf for daily health inspection. This one takes a sec to set up, but is no doubt better capable for telling you when you can reap the rewards of your hard work.Hopes this little review helps anyone interested in a good, inexpensive scope that will get most of your needs done! Happy growing!TL;DR - Great for trichome inspection, good light, good focus, easy set up, dependable quality so far! 5Great little unit.It works. For the money this is the best little microscope in its category. I was surprised at the size as it is taller than the others in a similar category All of the adjustments work freely and smoothly. It focuses pretty well has a bright enough light, and although I don't use it, a cute little base, designed like a big microscope. I have several of this type and style and this is the best of the lot, by far and less in price than some of the others. I use it for looking for Spider Mites, and the horrible little thing called a Russett Mite. They are the size of a spider mites let and can not be identified with a 60x. I can easily identify them and their eggs with this.Certainly not like an expensive Microscope but if you're on a budget, it will get the job done 5Best of the cheap pocket scopes. If you know what a trichome is, you'll want to get this scope. I have both this and the Carson MM-100 MicroMax. Here's how they stack up against each other:The MicroMax is half the size of the SE MW10085. This makes it harder to hold and focus unless it is on a table. The MM has a puny LED which doesn't provide enough light to see much. The SE MW10085 has a great zoom slider and focus wheel which are easy to operate while looking through the lens. The MMax is much harder to focus in situ without moving it all over and losing the object to be viewed. In fact, the only thing I liked about the MMax is the rubber eyepiece (no biggie). 5Cheap build quality. Light constantly flickers on/off. Better options availableI don't leave many reviews. Only when a product either exceeds my expectations, or completely falls flat. This review is unfortunately for the latter. The build quality on this microscope is poor. It is not solid, and the light will flicker on/off even when you are not touching it! The button to turn the light on wasn't even straight...I'll post a picture later. I had boxed these up to return them but I missed Amazon's return window so now I'm stuck with a microscope that works maybe 70% of the time. The only saving grace was that it was less than $10, otherwise this would have definitely been a one-star review. Go with the Carson MicroBrite Plus MM-300 if you're looking for something comparable. 2
