    First foray yielded a resounding 'meh'...The first experiment we did (growing blue crystals) was a bit of a dud. We did get crystals but it took forever (days and days and days) and the final product was pretty, 'meh'. It sapped our enthusiasm for the next round of crystal making. I suppose I should give it more of a chance before writing it off but when what we thought was going to be the coolest of them all turns out to be less than impressive it's easy to seek further for science fun. I'm perfectly content to wait days, weeks, months or even years to produce something amazing ...just didn't get that here. 2Unclear Instructions, Disappointing ResultsI ordered this as a Christmas gift for my 9 year old sister. It was her top-billed Christmas wish list item, so I was excited to give this to her. Unfortunately, this turned out to be quite mediocre. The instructions are not totally clear in most cases, and this kit requires you to provide a lot of the materials--bowls, cups, pots, etc. In addition, the geode (which the my sister was arguably most excited for) did not work out at all, even after meticulously following all the instructions. Some of the crystals did turn out, which was great, but I don't think I would ever purchase this again. I'd skip this and opt to spend a little more money on a better kit. 3Fun, but can be frustrating.While my 10 yr old really likes that there are Sooo many kinds of crystals to make. BE WARNED!! Even with my direct supervision, crystals for the stalagmite will form VERY easily if one little grain touches the solution in the beaker (picture shown). And the crystals that grow on the rock are cloudy on the top of the rock & only a couple cool crystals formed on the side (other picture). 4Good crystal kitWe bought the kit because Amazon ran a great deal. The kit came with everything you needed to make several different crystals. We would make our crystals and then look at them under the microscope. Crystals made from different things make different shape crystals. My son enjoyed it and my 3 year old girls were in love with how pretty they looked under the microscope. We only had one experiment not turn out but we had enough supplies to do it again then it worked the second time. The only drawback was some of the experiments were making the same crystals again but putting it in a different container or adding a different color. We made one of each different type of crystal but felt it was silly to make same crystals again. We left several experiments undone for that reason. It was an awesome kit and we all had fun seeing how it looked under the microscope. 5Double doozy! Educational AND fun!I bought this kit for my 8 year old son who loves rocks and minerals and basically anything scientific. He had been asking for a while about getting a crystal growing kit after seeing rock candy in the store. I said I could find directions and make our own at home...After that didn't work (too slow for an 8 year old), I started looking for a kit adequate enough to satiate my science guys appetite. I found this one a short time later and let me tell you-- This crystal growing kit is everything I hoped for and more! It includes several different concoctions to grow crystals. You can make different colors, different kinds, different shapes, and they all grow at different rates! And there are still leftovers! My guy was supremely satisfied with this product and so was I! 5Worst instructions ever!My husband and son did one of the projects and it didn't work. Today I tried to do a different project with my son. This one said to pour the mixture into container B. There is no explanation on what container B is. How big should it be, what material? Plastic? Glass? Ceramic? If it's one of the small containers included in the box, then why would they have us mix so much of the materials and water? I looked on YouTube to see if anyone else had done the project yet (Jumbo Jewel) , but only found an uninformative add for the box. Awful. So disappointing :( 2time involved is better than other kitsHaven't tried experiments yet but this is not my first rodeo. Just looking a directions I must say, time involved is better than other kits. Experiments produce results in very short time. Some are instant. Must have a non alumnimn pot, so prepare ahead of kids being involved. Mine are 7 and 8. I am sure they can do this. No need to be older, just desire to study rocks. Excellent variety of experiments & options to use any failed product to try again. I am only doing 1 per day with a few days in between to see past successes first and build on results. Take your time. 5Buyer beware!I thought this would be a fun activity for my kids - so I bought them each one. First, the directions are horribly written. Terminology it not consistent. There are 2 different "bowl" like items - directions indicate to use the bowl - which one? Then to use the geo mold - well, what is that look like? I used what I thought was the geo mold. Instructions also say to use "Container A" -- what does container A look like? Is it the mixing bowl or an item that came with the kit? After waiting until the mold dries, it doesn't come out like the instructions said - and both cracked making the project useless.I don't recommend this product at all. 1Great gift for future Bill Nyes!I bought this for my science loving niece and she was ecstatic which she opened her present. The crystals grew fast and were beautiful. Her mom sent me pictures of each one after they grew. I would suggest leaving the crystals in the solution a little longer than the instructions say. The longer they sit, the bigger they grow! 5DisappointingWe've only done one experiment so hopefully the next will be better, but I was supposed upon opening the box, how much of your own things you needed to do an experiment. I thought it would include most of the supplies. Also, not all the ingredients are properly labeled the same as they are listed in directions. When we did get around to growing our first crystal, the citrine, it was quite the disappointment. Tiny little pieces with splotchy colors.. not to mention it took weeks to dry out. Very disappointing 1
