Customer Reviews

A fun but difficult single-player board game.A great single player game. The mechanics and gameplay is easy to learn but very difficult to master. You can learn a few skills and play the game fine and get your butt kicked on the final boss. Mastering when to sacrifice and how much to sacrifice, while knowing exactly what to fight to win, can be the difference between a perfect game that gives you a fighting chance against the boss and a game that felt good only to get your untimely death. The biggest thing is you have to play this game several times. Only by learning your deck, which cards could be coming to help you, which cards could be coming to hurt you, and planning accordingly, could you hope to beat this game. Definitely takes a bit of luck, a lot of skill, and loads of memory of what dangers you face on the island and from your own aging. If you like games that take brains and skill more than luck, I'd highly recommend it. 5Enjoyable solo deck builderI bought this after reading an arstechnica.com review of best 1-player board games. It is a very enjoyable deck builder that takes about an hour to play, if you survive to the end and fight the pirates. The backstory is that you are Friday, an inhabitant of a tropical island, and you help newly shipwrecked Robinson survive and eventually escape the island by beating 2 pirates. You help Robinson get stronger by strategically eliminating weak cards in a starting deck and adding good ones. You have to overcome challenges to get the good cards. If you fail a challenge, you have the option of eliminating cards you don't want, but also lose life. If you lose too much life, Robinson dies and you lose the game. It's a simple premise but with some interesting strategy. If you do well enough to make to the end, there is some problem solving to do, to find the most effective way to use your now stronger deck to overcome the pirates. There is plenty of replay value due to new, random order of deck and challenges each time, plus 4 difficulty levels to try. If you want a more social experience than is possible in a 1-player game, this may not be a good choice for you. But this game is a lot of fun if you like strategy, problem-solving, or deck-building, and also want to be able to finish in a reasonable time of about 1 hour or less. 5A new standard of Solitaire!Friday is a very challenging solo player boardgame that doesn't require much in the way of play pieces to be absolutely ENTHRALLING! I have yet to win & play this on nights I want to bundle up in the covers & watch a good movie. While it /can/ be a very in-depth strategy game, you can also learn deeper routes of play while keeping it simple & constantly detaching your attention from it. AKA very good when watching a movie, chatting with friends online, in-between games/queues/loading screens that take a long time. The turns you take can take seconds to minutes depending on what moves you plan on making.I can't recommend this enough, as the price is SO low considering how much content & replayability fit into this one box. If any of you miss the days of Diablo 2 & its seemingly endless replayability then you'll really appreciate the polish this game has! They've really nailed down a phenomenal style of board game that I truly hope we see more of in the future! Keep an eye on Friedemann Friese Freitag-Project (The designers of this game, 2nd in their repertoire!)Thank you for taking the time to read this & I hope you found it helpful! I'll gladly answer any questions y'all might have, & promptly at that! Best wishes!P.S. The Robinson Crusoe theme feels like the ultimate marriage with the mechanics in this game! 5Fun game ONLY if you make up yor own rules.Ridiculously unbalanced. You will rarely (if ever) win. But its kind of fun trying. After a few losses, you ll realize the unlikeliness of winning and will make up your own rules. I personally restock all life points after each phase and choose the 2 prirate to fight, instead of making it random (extra points for higher level pirates). So there are a few things you can make up to make this too easy or at least winnable and still enjoyable. If you try playing to the rules defined for the game, you will get tired of trying to beat it and will quickly realize how impossible that is. There are even scenarios in the rulebook that will NEVER happen in this game. Its too bad that this wasn't thought out a bit better. But as I said, make up your own house rules and this is much for more fun. 2Great game with interesting mechanics that shift one's strategy throughout the game. Two games are rather consistently recommended for solo gamers - Friday and Onirim. I've had Onirim for a while (and would definitely recommend it as well), but for whatever reason hadn't acquired Friday until recently. Perhaps because the setup looks a bit involved (compared to Onirim, yes, but it's pretty trivial), or because the theme didn't grab me, or perhaps because (unlike Onirim) there is no two-player variant. Anyway, huge mistake having waited so long to pick this up! Really is a wonderful one-player game. There are plenty of gameplay reviews and overviews out there, which I don't intend to rehash. But there are a couple of neat mechanics that the significance of seems easy to gloss over in reading or watching these. The biggest thing is that there are three levels of combat - think of it sort of like going deeper into the dungeon in a dungeon crawler, and the enemies get harder the deeper you go. As you play the game, the deck of enemies (hazards, I guess they're called?) shrinks, but they become increasingly difficult. Your attack deck probably isn't going to grow much due to (either intentionally or unintentionally) losing fights, but it will get better. It won't necessarily get dramatically better in terms of attack points, but you will get more cards with more powerful abilities. Toward the beginning of the game, it's more a matter of brute strength, toward the end you're relying more on these abilities, which makes the progress of the game fresh and compelling. The fact that defeated hazards become new attack cards adds an interesting element as well - it can be worth taking a few hits to your life points or not throwing a fight (useful for getting rid of bad attack cards) if the reward is good enough. All in all, a great game to play on a sleepless night, and one that I regret not having picked up sooner. 5Maybe I was expecting too much??I don't know what I was expecting when I bought this game. I've seen it played on Youtube, read reviews galore and it seemed like a really interesting game to play solo, but once I got it, played it a few times, I'm like "Meh" LOL It has a really easy learning curve, just read the book and the special insert that tells you how to lay out the game and everything else is pretty much self explanatory. My gripe is it's almost impossible to advance to the next phase which is supposed to me medium difficulty, not to mention win the game. Seems every card is either -1 or -2 or 0. I had one card and only needed 0 or above, every card I drew was -1 -2 and I died instead of just giving up. But if you give up. you don't get points or abilities and sooner or later those points will be needed to fight the pirates, so it's kind of redundant to have so many 0 -1 -2 cards. I dunno maybe it's just me, seems like everyone else really likes this game. I'll give it another few rounds and see if I like it more, but for now it's not my idea of a "fun" way to kill off time. 3Excellent 1 player game with diverse levels of challengeThis game is highly recommended. I spend most of my game-time playing solo, so I was pleased to see that this little box contained a "solo adventure" and also that many reviews indicated that it was quite challenging. I will confirm that this game is not for the faint of heart. It took me several plays to beat the first of the four difficulties indicated in the instructions. With a little experience, however, I was able to figure out a strategy that seems to work well in most cases and I have been very successful with achieving victory even on the fourth difficulty level. If you want to know that strategy, you can find it easily on-line, and my experience has been that the general principals of the most common strategy found on-line will help you prevail. Bad news if you want a perpetual challenge, but good news if you want a winnable game that doesn't beat you up 9 out of 10 tries and make you feel despondent. More good news - you can always start with fewer life points of modify the card sets to create ever increasing levels of difficulty. There is certainly a point where luck of the draw will start to be more important than strategy as you design brutal challenges to combat your own success, but I am finding that playing the game just a wee bit harder than the fourth scenario in the instructions provides a good level of difficulty. If you like to play solo, this is an essential purchase. It is sleek in its design, engaging to play, has high replayability due to the potential to fine tune the difficulty) and it is a reasonably inexpensive game.PS. The components are not elaborate, but they are well made. I have played my set 20 times without any fatigue at all. I am careful with my game components, but all but the most careless people should find this set lasting for years and years. 5Liking it quite a bit right off the bat.I have recently watched some videos online to learn the rules and have the rule book handy to remind me of the the bonus rules on the cards and so far I am REALLY enjoying this game. I wanted something to do while my girlfriend watched Netflix and I think I've found the perfect activity. I love the setup and everything makes sense and is easy to understand. Overall an awesome purchase. After this I'm gonna get started on Mage Knight. 5Amazing Solo GameThis is a great little game. I love the small box that it comes in. Makes it handy for travel. It is a very engaging solo experience. I like it more than Agricola, maybe only because it requires far less setup and tear down time. But, it does take up a fairly large footprint for a solo game. Think of it taking up maybe as wide a space as playing regular solitaire with a 52 card deck, but about a 1/4 more table space out from you. This game has a wonderful theme as well. I have played this quite a few times, and only won twice. There are 4 difficulty levels to play this game, and I have only played on level one so far. But, I scored 92 points in my last game, so plan to move up to the next level from now on. I haven't enjoyed a solo game like this in a very long time. If you are looking for a solid solo game, then I can't recommend this enough. 5Good solo gameSolitaire games have to thread the needle between too much randomness on the one hand and puzzles on the other. Can you actually improve without solving the game? Do you need to use randomness to avoid that, and if so, does it all come down to a lucky die roll? There's luck in Friday due to the shuffle, but it is ultimately about your choices, largely about facing your demons now or putting them off until later (hint: you need to do some of the former). You get better at it. At first, it's thrilling to just make it past the initial "green" stage. Maybe winning the whole thing will eventually become no big deal. If so, it will take a lot of plays to get there.I didn't really get into the theme of this much. Once playing a few times, I saw the cards as nothing more than game actions, not even really noticing what Crusoe was up to per the card text. 4
