Customer Reviews

Excellent condition, vintage, openedBut was like new. Would definitely buy from this seller again. The game is difficult and long term but my husband and grandson love it! Thanks. 5Haters gonna hateI played the old VHS edition and gave this one a try... it was well worth it. The rules being simplified means the game is more wildly fun. Some people complain that it lacks depth without the Soul Reavers and the like... but, honestly, this game doesn't exist to be a competative dynamo. It's there for the experience of playing with others and random upsets and excitements and frights happening. This works perfectly. The menu asking who is playing so it customizes the responses? Perfect. Worth it. Thanks Pressman! 5Never gets oldI just got this in the mail yesterday and played it with 5 other friends, and WOW what a great time! I loved Nightmare, and was a little skeptical on a new gatekeeper. Though I liked this new Gatekeeper, I was finding myself a little put back by all the puns and jabs at the players. Yes the first Gatekeeper was rough, but this one is amplified by about 3 times. Still, the cleverness of the new experiences with newer technology (completely random events) I found myself shocked that there were multiple intros as well! (Nice touch!) Not even the 3D animations really put me off that much, but I still would have liked to see the Gatekeeper I came to know and love. (I wonder what he's doing nowdays??)The game kind of plays a little backwards from the first one. (Have to get YOUR nightmare from the well instead of someone else's and you have to collect one of every color key instead of all of your own. The dueling is a nice touch, and the Black key is a great addition (stopped one of our guys from winning for about 14 minutes!)My friends will definitely be playing this on a weekly basis with me. Can't wait to get some other newbies on with this! Having an issue trying to back up the DVD (don't want to rely only on one disc in case that fails) but I think it's because it's a DVD9, (merely a speed bump). If you get the chance and the money, it's worth it! Just as much fun as the first one, and it's randomized for replay value. (unlike a linear VHS) Might have to pick up Kufu in the future...we'll see. 5Came in excellent condition with all of the pieces and we're pretty ...Came in excellent condition with all of the pieces and we're pretty sure the cd is brand new. The game is a lot of fun for a small group. Excellent service from the seller. 5Got to keep track on your timecard, passed by a faster than you thinkThis game is awesome to play can't keep my friends wanting to play it all the time. Only dislike you need more than two people to play. Won't let you play with just two people. The gatekeeper like the trash talk a lot I like that. Two thumbs up 5love it!i had been looking everywhere for this game. now that i have it its been an every saturday night kind of thing. my kids love it its fast paced. its different every time its played and my kids get excited to play it and try to beat the gatekeeper. it came with all the pieces and the dvd plays great! the box was a bit beaten up but everything else was still factory sealed. this was the best purchase of 2012 i'm just sorry it too so long to give feed back on. LOVE IT! ^_^ 5Great game!!Wow this game is SO much fun!! I play it often with my 12 and 9 year old and it's so much fun, even if noone win's! My children have a blast, especially right at the end when game play seriously speeds up to see if someone can get to the end!! It is a little spooky, so it may not be for the younger children, but my 9 year old does fine with it, as long as I leave the lights on :). I recommend this for a quick family game session, that's just as much fun with other adult's as it is with children. BEWARE THE GATEKEEPER!! 5Review for those who have played the old VHS versionsThis review is specifically for those that have played the 1991-1995 VHS series of games including Nightmare and Atmosfear: The Harbingers. The game is mostly similar to The Harbingers, with a few things more similar to Nightmare, with a lot of simplifications, and a few new mechanics. The Board: The board itself upon first glance actually looks a lot like the board from Nightmare: a flat non-modular board with a main clockwise circular track, paths leading to the center, spaces on the board for time and fate cards and character headstones. Because the board is not modular, there is less variety from game to game and there are no Soul Rangers which makes me wonder if that's the reason the game is 49 minutes as opposed to an hour as the Soul Ranger section of the game was 10 minutes. But then you do have aspects from Harbingers such as there being 6 color-coded realms, flight and duel spaces, 6 paths leading to the inner ring where you can move both directions, and the greatest fears being stored on slips of paper in an actual physical Well of Fears tub with a lid. Some simplifications though are that there is only one space that leads from the inner ring to the Well of Fears that no longer requires an exact roll to land on, BUT instead of drawing a fear that's not your own, you are supposed to "face your fear" and draw your own fear. If you draw one that's NOT your own, rather than being out of the game, you simply return to your headstone and can try again. The Keys: There is one single space for each key color for each of the corresponding realms and 6 keys of each color to collect and there is no limit to how many one player can have. You store your keys in a rack that has your player number on it, shielding the colors from view. One of the few new mechanics is the "cursed key". If you land on the cursed key space, you must take the key and cannot win while you have it in your possession (think pretty pretty princess lol). Your only hope is landing on a player and passing it to them, or hoping they take it in a duel. Your first key gives you the power to duel, your own colored key lets you release yourself from a black hole...the rest have no corresponding powers. The powers of Flight and rolling one or two dice are available from the start and Occupation and Gates are absent from the game. The Cards: This time around there are Fate cards and making a reappearance from Nightmare there are also Time cards. The Gatekeeper may ask you to draw a card or you may land on the corresponding spaces on the board. There are no Duel cards, you simply roll one die per player dueling. The DVD: The DVD has visual instructions which is a nice feature and makes it easier for new players to grasp. When you actually click to play the game, the video zooms through a cgi scene of a graveyard, down through catacomb-like tunnels into a lava-filled cavern in a sequence that almost induces nausea. The 5.1 surround track is a nice touch but the music and sound effects get a little odd at time which always draw comments from players. Here you are introduced to the new Gatekeeper. He has a heavy accent and this Gatekeeper is a little less humorous and entertaining and a little more shouty and insulting and had a tendency to ramble on, calling everyone an idiot more times than you can count. The makeup is pretty good though. You start the game by telling the DVD which characters are actually in the game so you get a customized experience, then the clock starts and the cgi backdrop starts to move through tunnels and different environments. At certain points, you play mini-games where you take control with the remote which is a nice addition. The rest of the scenes are randomly dispersed which makes no two games exactly the same, a huge improvement over the VHS medium, however when it gets to the start of a new video track that it randomly chooses, there is a noticeable pause and the audio goes silent, which players start to pick up on, knowing that the Gatekeeper is going to make an appearance within 10 seconds or so which is an unavoidable shame due to DVD technology. One new feature that is a welcome is that when you win, you hit the Menu button and are actually treated to a winning message rather than just simply stopping the tape.Artwork: I have to make a comment on the artwork style because it is decidedly colorful and almost cartoony. There are several reviews from parents saying their preteen children have lots of fun with the game or something along those lines. While the gameplay is largely the same, I feel like with the old artwork and presentation, most parents wouldn't let their children play one of the older VHS games, so I guess you could say this iteration is more family-friendly. 3great funThis game comes with easy instructions on the DVD so you don't even need to go to the paper directions (a hated task). 4-6 players creates the fun; there is a person assigned to be the judge , jury etc (the chosen one) the DVD will keep track of time ; only 49 minutes to accomplish the tasks not to mention the stopping of play by the gatekeeper to make you miss a turn or give another player an opportunity to take your key to slow you down (watch the clock) time cards for special activity to be played when the time is noted on the TV during the countdown; so with all this activity and you trying to move around the board to accomplish all tasks, it creates great fun ; can't wait to play this again and again 5Great if you can find it usedThis is a spin off from the original "Video Nightmare" (the USA release title) which is an amazing game with excellent filming and great acting. If you still own a VCR and want to have a great deal of fun with your friends I highly recommend you get it instead. I no longer own a VCR so I looked around and found a copy of this game for half price which was still pretty steep. They have taken a great game and tried to improve it. Unfortunately, like a lot of sequels it does not equal the original. It's a very fast paced game as people are racing around the board before the "Gatekeeper" can stop you and mess with your progress. This was the main focus of the original game and it is more than enough. Here they have added rules for dueling other players, modified the rules for completion and added a few more 'enhancements' that really just muddle things up. The video is more adaptive due to the DVD format, but that's the only plus and it's taken a good idea and severely degraded it by creating it with poor computer generated graphics, bad acting and just a generally less refined feel over all.In summery, even some of my friends who had never played the original walked away feeling a little under-whelmed. If you can find it deeply discounted it might be worth dragging out once a year at Halloween parties after everyone has had a few drinks. I would avoid it other wise. it's kinda sad really because it's a great consept. 3
