Customer Reviews

Kid loves it, but very easy to winWe have a lot of Peaceable Kingdom games. Dinosaur Escape is probably our three (almost four) year old's favorite. It's cute, and well made, but I took off a star because it's way too easy to win. We had to make up several house rules to make it more interesting (dinos can only search in the area they are in, each player only moves one dino, if you turn over a T-Rex, you shuffle all the fern tiles up and redistribute). Even then we still win nearly every time. Oh well, the kid loves it. 4Known at Gramma's house as "The Volcano Game" ... ;)This cooperation-building game was the absolute highlight of my 3-year old grandson's 2016 Christmas. He renamed it "The Volcano Game". His Gramma (me) is so very very impressed with the heavy duty thick gauge construction and the brilliant graphics of the game board and the playing pieces. Beautifully designed, perfectly thought out, each player helps the other players to achieve their common goal to save the dinosaurs ... a true team effort. 3-year olds will change the rules ... often ... and yet, the game is super fun even if the rules veer away from the actual proper rules. So ... definitely buy this game ... let the grand-kiddos make up the rules as they go if they are 3 or younger (Hahahahaha!) ... and PLEASE RESCUE THE DINOSAURS before the volcano erupts! 54 year old boy loves this gameMy two year old can play /participate with help. My four year understood the simple rules and could play easily immediately (beginner mode). You role a number or volcano on the die. Then you pick one of three Dinos to move the number of spaces, or add 1 of 5 pieces to the volcano. If you get to move a Dino, you get to flip a disk. Goal is to find the hidden Dinos in the face down disks that match the game piece Dinos so you can save them from the volcano explosion and move them to a safe island. The volcano explodes after you roll volcano 5 times. Everyone wins, or not, by working together. Game takes 10 min max, so you can finish a game without loosing focus or play multiple rounds. It says 2-4 players and it could even be used for more. Two difficulty levels: flip disks up and leave up for younger players or flip back over for a memory challenge. Great game! 5My 5 year old's favorite gameMy son loves dinosaurs, so this game was a no brainer. It's fun enough for adults to play, goes fairly quickly, and building the volcano is pretty cool. I'm a huge fan of most Peacable Kingdom games and I would definitely recommend this one. 5Cute as a first board gameBasically once you have one Peaceable Kingdom game you have them all. This said, we own 3 of them: The owls one, which wasn't a great success, the Treasure one (the first and best one) and this one. This one seems to be the easiest of all. So far we never lost. In order to lose you need to build the Volcano, in order to build it you need to get it when you roll the die, we rarely get the volcano, another way to turn the REX dinosaur ... if you get the REX the dinosaurs go back to their starting point, not sure if also the ones already saved go back though, in order to make it harder we put back also the ones that were already saved, but we already know where their card are so it's easy to save them again.... This game is in part a memory game, I don't believe there is much strategy in it ... you can move the dinosaurs either way on the board. My 4.5. appreciates the game, he says he likes the volcano. In theory this game can be played alone, you don't really need 2 players.Guess it's a good choice as a first board game but I believe we are done with peaceable Kingdom and moving to something a bit different, not sure what yet, I like the cooperative concept though and I believe it can be applied to any other board game where you can play in teams. 4Comparison to other beginner Peaceable Kingdom gamesWe love all the Peaceable Kingdom games we have so far (I rely heavily on ratings and reviews). I am constantly amazed by the variety this company has to offer. I will not hesitate to buy more and plan on checking out a few from our local game store rental. We started with Count Your Chickens (great for young kids, just learning how to play games) and Hoot Owl Hoot (it was a bit frustrating until my kids were old enough to really work together and stay focused). I wanted some more games but was worried this one would be too much like those two. My oldest kids love Dinosaurs, so I figured they'd enjoy it even if it felt like a repeat. In all three games the players are racing against a disastrous fate (fox, sun, or volcano, respectively). However, this game is COMPLETELY different from the two we already have. Dinosaur escape uses memory and real cooperative team strategy. Count Your Chickens uses counting (obviously) but no team strategy (the spinner dictates what you do on each turn). Hoot Owl Hoot uses cooperative team strategy, but I found that just resulted in my husband and I telling our kids where to make their moves. Of the three games, this is now our favorite (and not just because of the novelty). There are a couple critiques I'd make though. The older games (CYC and HOH) have the game rules written on the inside of the top lid and all the game pieces come in a little pack. This newer game has the rules printed on a separate insert and the pieces just get thrown in the box. I'm assuming this is just an updated packaging difference, but I prefer the old standard. 5Great game. You have to save the three dinosaurs ...Great game. You have to save the three dinosaurs by moving them to the island before the volcano erupts. You set up the board by mixing some tokens up and placing them upside down in designated places in the board and puting the dinosaurs randomly in the footprint starting positions. On your turn, you roll the dice, if you roll a volcano, you place one piece of the volcano in the center of the board. If you roll a number, you move any dinosaur of your choice in any direction on the board. Then you flip a token to reveal what's underneath. Some tokens are dinosaurs (that match the playing piece dinosaurs you are moving around the board), others are worthless (rocks, etc) and one is a T.Rex (that scares your dinosaurs back to their starting positions). After you reveal the token, you flip it back over and remember what it was so you don't waste turns later on. The way you save a dinosaur is to find and flip a token with a picture of one of the matching playing pieces and bring that dinosaur to the area where you found the token and flip it over correctly. It's a fast game and requires some strategy and some memory. Great for little kids. 5Peaceable Kingdom continues to make our favorite family games. This is our third Peaceable Kingdom game, and once again we're so pleased with it. My 4 year can play it, but it's not boring for his 6 year old sister or his parents. It's also easy to teach playmates, so it can be played when friends come over without frustration (or feeling like one person always wins). It's great too that you can make it simpler or more challenging depending on the players. I appreciate that the dinos look like real dinos, and the pictures on the cards are actual archeological/prehistoric images (e.g., fossils, foot prints). 5Nice game, nicely made. A game of Memory but enhanced. This is a nice game. It is mostly a memory game but where you all work together. There is a race-against-the-clock element as you need to get the 3 (nice looking, well made, nicely painted) plastic dinosaurs to a certain spot before a cardboard volcano is built. My hubby took one look at the dice and the number of memory tiles and the volcano pieces, did the math and calculated there is no way the volcano would ever beat the players! There is only a 1-in-6 chance of rolling the dice to the volcano icon. Everyone is happy when they win the game but I am very tempted to change the rules a bit and bring in a coin to flip. That way you roll the dice to move a dino but also flip a coin so there is a 50-50 chance of building the volcano each time (plus the 1-in-6 of the dice). That way you really do need to pay attention to the memory tiles and not just keep flipping the same ones over and over because you got distracted. For my 5yo this game is awesome, for me, well, it s no settlers of catan, but it gives us something to do together. 5The mechanics are great and there is a way to adapt the rules ...This was a gift for my three-year-old nephew who LOVES this game. His parents are board game enthusiasts and he loves dinosaurs, so I knew the premise would be a hit. The mechanics are great and there is a way to adapt the rules to allow for different ability levels. The artwork and sturdiness of the board are both great, and add a lot to the actual play of the game. Kudos to this company for this one! 5
