Customer Reviews

Poor wedding job. The frame is not closed when arrivedBought this one for my son's gift. Been so excited when it arrived , and yet, disappointed right away. This one, the frame wasn't closed together and welded, so any pressure while winding it up caused the center spinning portion to come loose and fall out. So disappointed that I can't return due to the seller policy???? Stay away from this product! 1good toy, but poor qualityI got this toy for a fun little desk trinket. It came in a simple box, but you could tell it was lesser quality without even opening it. I took it out and started playing with it. The gyroscope is decent when it works, but it's not good quality, so it isn't perfectly balanced. That said, it doesn't stay spinning long and it doesn't perform like a high quality gyroscope. The toy comes with a string that is very cheap quality. It is also somewhat difficult to get the string in and wind it up - a thicker string might have been better. The base pictured is also a very cheap quality and I already lost it, so using the toy on that is not much of an option. I'd have to recommend just spending a few extra dollars and getting a higher quality gyroscope that has better balance and feels better in general. 1Great for the whole family.Great toy. We're learning about Wright brothers and this was one of the toys they played with so I thought it would be fun to get for the kids. 9, 7, 5 year old boys loved it. 2 year old daughter loved having it placed on her finger. Kept the 1 year old baby distracted too. Plus it was neat for my husband and I. It's sturdy too. Having three boys, they're pretty rough. 5Vibrates, unbalanced, but fun anyway.I had one of these when I was a kid, around 1956, so I bought a new one for my grandkids. After half a century, my memory of the quality of the original might be very suspect, but I believe the quality of manufacture of the current version is quite poor. It's a toy after all, and the price point is $10.00 for something manufactured in the U.S.A., so how much "quality" can you expect? The gyro I received is not well-balanced. It vibrates and makes noise. You can balance it on the little black (not red) plastic pedestal, however the vibration from the spinning wheel makes the pedestal vibrate and jump around. The manufacturer should raise the price point and the quality of manufacture so the vibration is reduced. That said, I gave it four stars because of the low price and because I like that somebody still makes this sort of thing. Had I to do it again, for a dollar more, I'd buy the two-pack, so there'd be a second chance of getting one better balanced, and so two kids could each have one to play together instead of fighting over whose turn it is now. 4I remembered how much fun this thing was when I was a kidI bought this to play with my 4 year old daughter who is fascinated by tops and spinning/moving toys of all kinds. I remembered how much fun this thing was when I was a kid. Funny how something so simple can be so much fun. Then I used it to explain to my older daughters how certain kinds of sensors were developed over time by using a gyroscope that can be gimbaled in a plane or multiple planes. The gyroscope itself it well constructed and made to last. It's worth noting I tried a more expensive gyroscope first that did not work half as well. 4Same cool toy as my childhood but.......The same device I had a kid in grade school and very neat indeed. The only down side is it obviously mass produced as the paint comes off the shaft where you wrap the string quickly. I also remember them being more stable and spinning with less vibration. For the PRICE I am more than happy with it.Don't get me wrong, it still does the magic of a Gyroscope and will balance on a string or pencil point, it's just not quite the quality of the old school models. Of course for all I know they may have had lead paint back then so who knows. 4Nostalgic for the old qualityThis toy is adequate to demonstrate some of the fundamental physics of gyroscopes, but the quality and performance is disappointing to a person who remembers the gyroscopes of that past that this is supposed to replicate. In the first place, the circular frame is not really rigid. There is a break in it that is intentional, according to the instructions, and is used for "final balancing adjustments." Unfortunately, the unit I received had such a noticeable imbalance, which no amount of adjustment of the frame would correct, that the entire frame vibrated and if placed on the included plastic stand, at any angle other than vertical, the buzzing vibration quickly bounced the entire frame off of the mount. By suspending the gyroscope on a loop at the end of the pull string I was able, for a few seconds, to demonstrate the ability of the gyroscope to "defy gravity" but because of the imbalance and vibration, friction and vibration degrade the speed and operation of the gyroscope within a few seconds. Bottom line, this toy may be worth the price that reflects its poor quality, but it is a very disappointing tool for demonstrating the amazing properties of a quality gyroscope. I haven't tried other "toy" quality gyroscopes, but I would NOT recommend this one. 3Exactly like the originalThis is exactly like the one I had as a kid; same pot metal, same cheap string, but a blast to play with. I am a science teacher and my students couldn't get enough of it... until the string broke. Easy enough to fix, but I need a break from the constant begging, "Is it my turn to play with it yet?"Note: If anyone at manufacturing is listening, I would pay more for one that was better made. 4Great for all agesMy Dad is in his 70's and a still active Engineer. He got one of these a couple of months ago and started playing with it while explaining all the physics behind it and the principles applications... he has us all agape. He got into taking the gyroscope with him to work, and he's been "teaching" young engineers with it. Now I'm getting him a precision gyroscope. This is one of those perfect toys that can teach so much in such a simple way, but if you really want to get all the awesomeness, you need to go and check your basic physics first! 5Disappointing Junk!Yes... absolute junk! I thought for sure that since this was made in America (Indiana) I wouldn't even have to question the quality, but I was wrong, and maybe also explains why so many jobs are going to Japan, China, and Mexico. The entire basis for this toy (instrument) is balance - perfect balance. Upon the first spin with only my fingers, I could immediately see that this thing wasn't balanced. After spinning it using the string and setting down on the table top, it sounded like a buzzer was going off, and after only about 15 seconds fell over like a sick dog. When I was a kid, I had a real gyroscope that was perfectly balanced and spun for many minutes - not a few seconds. If these are in fact actually manufactured and assembled in Indiana, then TEDCO needs to hire some new engineers and quality control people!! American made or not, TEDCO has forever lost me as a customer. 1
