This small set is a tease!I bought this set along with MindWare KEVA Contraptions for my 9yo son. We have only had them for 2 days, but he and his 14yo brother have been immensely enjoying them. Based on the reviews of the other set, it appears there can be some misunderstanding about what is in the box: this is a set of 50 identical wooden planks with instructions for *building* ramps, chutes, funnels and "crazy contraptions". Because no glue or connectors are used, it *is* challenging to build the contraptions but that is also what makes it an extremely open-ended toy. The first night my 9yo was a bit frustrated. We talked about how it wouldn't be much fun if I got him a toy where he "beat the boss" on the first night, and that with this toy he'd have a chance to improve and get better at using it over time, and that as evidenced by his older brother, he'd probably still be enjoying 5 years from now. He took that to heart and by the next morning was already starting to master some of the building forms and had created his own working contraption.This toy requires patience. It would be well-suited for the type of child who enjoys building domino runs -- it requires a similar level of patience, precision and resilience in the face of the inevitable mishaps.The planks are identical in size and shape to Kapla or other Keva planks, though these are pine and not hardwood as the other more expensive sets are. They can used interchangeably with those systems, and thus can be used to construct all the other types of structures one might build with Keva planks. The worksmanship seems excellent and precise.The balls appear to be colored ping pong balls and the only downside to this is that one of our balls already got crushed somehow. However the upside to this is that they are easily replaced/supplemented by readily available ping pong balls.We bought this set along with the 200-plank set, thinking it would give us some additional planks and a few extra contraption idea. I'm not sure that was worth it, and we might have been better off getting another 200 plank set, as with 2 boys using them, we clearly need more planks :) The additional designs in the instruction book that come with this set aren't very interesting or fun. Buying this set alone would be a tease -- there aren't enough planks to build a very big or interesting contraption. I recommend buying (one of more of) the larger set.For those who already own a set of planks, there doesn't seem to be any way of getting the contraption instructions without buying the sets at this time. This is unfortunate. It would be nice to be able to buy the instructions only for my nephews who already own planks, and to buy instructions for more "generic" uses of the planks for my own sons. 4Better than expectedMy grandson had a set of 50 which is not enough to do much. His mom asked for more to make it more practical and fun. I chose this set after reading so now he has 450. Six children played with this number cooperatively for three days. Having the balls in the set is good. 5Surprising value for being...planks of wood I was surprised, even after reading all the reviews, when I opened the box & found nothing but a slim booklet, 2 ping-pong balls & a pile of tiny planks of wood. I spent just under $30 for 50 tiny planks of wood??? I was disappointed. BUT, after experimenting w/ them my six year old, I can see past the simplicity the value comes in watching what she does with them. Nothing could be more open ended than a pile of wood the booklet got us started, but we felt free to go wherever we wanted from there. There s nothing but gravity to make them stick together, so dexterity, patience, & logic were all required. Every time our structures fell over, which was frequent, we d laugh & say We must rebuild! and start over. I was really impressed with her resilience. I do think $30 is a lot of money for something so simple, even with the pieces being so stackable, AND all the other reviews are 100% correct 50 planks is just enough to start your addiction, not nearly enough to do much of anything with. Especially if you have more than one child. Do yourself a favor & just spring for the 200. That said I really do recommend this as a great toy & think it would span a great range of ages. My six year old still needs my help for the moment, but probably won t for too much longer. 5Cool toy, but basically a wooden building block set with a good marketing plan.This is basically a set of uniform wooden blocks with pictures of some pretty cool stuff you can duplicate. Great ideas for various contraptions - two balls included for various "marble run" type courses you can build. Note - with this 50 block set, you can't build very much. You run out of blocks quickly, and the playtime is usually pretty short.For the price, in my own opinion, you might be better off economically getting a basic wooden block set. However, Contraptions has marketed the coolness of the product, as well as turned it into some sort of fancy engineering child/brain development type toy. It has been entered into toy contests and gotten good reviews from educational magazines, etc - they have put a lot of time and money into marketing (which of course they have to do to sell the toys). It is quite expensive for what it is, and a lot of what you are paying for, as it is with many of these type toys, is the marketing expenses associated with the product.My 5 year old was excited by the name (he likes the idea of "contraptions" and the cool pictures on the box), but after about 10 to 15 minutes he grew bored with it and moved on to something else. He definitely still likes the blocks and the idea of building things with them, it just doesn't take him very long to do so with these 50 piece set. He lasted a lot longer playing with Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys, where he actually had to put some time into putting his various inventions together. 3My 8 year-old's favorite toyMy 8 year-old is thrilled with this set. He received the 50-plank set for his birthday in November and very soon he was asking for the 200-plank set. You might as well just buy the 200-plank set first because you can do more complex combinations. The instructions do have different options in this set than the 50-plank set, however, and sometimes he does use all 250 planks! The balls are similar to ping pong balls, but maybe a little firmer. Such a simple, quality toy with big-time learning value! Worth the $49 I spent. 5Amazing investmentI'll admit, I was worried this was a lot to pay for pieces of wood. However, this is one of the coolest toys ever. It uses good old fashioned building blocks, except that the weight and proportion of the blocks just happens to mean that these are particularly good for building and balancing. My kids and I have so much fun trying to build the ball runs in the manual. It's challenging, and our structures sometimes fall down prematurely, but what a satisfying toy. We all get a sense of accomplishment from working together to build something that looks impressive, took hard work and brain power, and culminates with a fun ball run. Plus, did you ever notice that siblings fight less when they're working toward a common goal? This is just the ticket. I'm looking forward to hours of family fun.Hint: There are manufacturers that sell these types of blocks cheaper. I'm usually one for a discount, but in this case you'll want to consider the importance of the included manual. That's where the magic lies. 5Keva Diva in the house!Can't say enough about Keva products--we bought this for our 10 year old daughter for Christmas along with the Keva Bot Maze (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B012TT5OH8/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1459189869&sr=1&keywords=keva). It is a little more intimidating than the latter, but still very much enjoyed. A big STEM fan with a desire to become an engineer, she loves the Keva sets and will get more for her birthday. Me, I love watching her creativity in action! She is a perfectionist at times but this seems to be a fun exercise for her that does not frustrate. 5Has revolutionized my first grade classroomI got these for my first grade (Waldorf) classroom, and the children absolutely love them. They literally beg for indoor recess, and come to school early just to play with them. I withheld the book, just to see what would happen with their own ingenuity, and they have been building complicated, multi-teired tunnels, jumps, and all sorts of things. The most interesting part has been watching their social interactions evolve. On the first day, they started out each building their own thing, and quickly ran out of blocks (I got two of these sets, so 400 pieces). They began to join their constructions together to build a more complicated one. By the end of about 40 minutes of play, six or seven children were all working together, and co-constructing a massive ball run. Having the pieces be all the same makes sharing easier, and opens up a whole range of flexibility in construction. After about two months of having these blocks in the classroom, they are still a favorite, and the constructions just get more and more complicated. I highly recommend these! Also-- helpful hint-- getting two sets of 200 blocks is actually cheaper than their 400 block set. I'm not sure why. I emptied them all into a big basket, and it keeps 6-7 children occupied. I'm sure they'd appreciate another set of them though. I may supplement later. Also, another helpful hint for classroom (and possibly home) use: I keep the balls in my desk, and the children have to "check them out", like in a library. The child that takes a ball is responsible for taking care of it and making sure it comes back to me. Without this rule, the balls would have been long gone. 5Fantastic Product!This toy is awesome! I can't possibly recommend it highly enough. My son is 11 years old and I can say with honesty that he has never played with any toy more than he does this one. The possibilities are endless! As a matter of fact, he plays with it much more than any other toy he has ever gotten, including Lego, Snap Circuits, and other excellent building toys. We got the pine wood set and I would suggest that is sufficient (as opposed to maple wood) for any family. Perhaps the maple version would be good for schools or other institutions that would have regular and long-term use, but we have seen no degradation of our planks despite extensive use (except when our dog eats one, which she loves to do). 5Creative FunI bought this for my 9yo son.
