Best Math Learning Tool I've Used--- Even better if you get 5 sets of 100.Well built, very versatile tool for teaching math. I'm a homeschooling mom with a PhD in Molecular Biology. Math is one of the most fundamental skills that I want to give my kid. At first, I was using duplo blocks to illustrate addition and subtraction, and I didn't see why I might need anything more. Then I found these Mathlink cubes. They turned out to be the single best math learning tool I've used so far. They are well constructed, snap together well, stay together well, and come apart easily for me (slightly difficult for my 5 year old to assemble, but she can pull them apart easily). You can actually build three dimensional shapes with them (you have to be a little clever about how you rotate each block, but it works). My 5 year old and I might construct a 3 X 3 X 3 cube and talk about why 27 is a cube number, while the the 3 year old uses the cubes to build a "crane" that is 30 blocks high. We use them in place of cuisenaire counting rods. We use them to illustrate concepts in our Singapore Math work book. We use them to illustrate multiplication. We use them for place value (10's and 1's), subtraction with borrowing, etc. They come in a set of 100, with 10 of each color. For the homeschoolers, I'd recommend buying at least 5 sets of 100. You really need to have about 50 in one color in order to really use this learning tool to its maximum potential. The only downside of these blocks is how many you need to buy to really use them. Also, note, on each six sided cube, there are 5 "holes" and only one "nubbin" that sticks out. At first, I was wishing there were two "nubbin" sides, to make it easier to build stable 3-D shapes. But after months of using them daily, I've concluded that the 5/1 design gives the toy the most flexibility for math teaching. Are they a choking hazard? Yes. Can they be chewed up by a toddler? Yes.How will they hold up after years of use? I don't know. Judging by the slightly rubbery plastic material they are made of, they will probably last a few years with intense use. So these are not quite as durable (or precision engineered) as Lego/Duplo products, which will last for generations. But still, excellent value.5I was wrong so I'm a little bummed about that but these are otherwise great! They are brightThese are as described and pictured though I for some reason expected to be a bump on more than just one side of each cube allowing you to snap columns together. I was wrong so I'm a little bummed about that but these are otherwise great! They are bright, sturdy and I love all of the little shapes in the middle circles. We'll put these to good use!4These are a great learning resourceThese are a great learning resource. They have 10 different colors and snap together to create patterns, towers, etc. Each block also have little shapes on the inside so you can create patterns by shapes as well.Pros-*Lots of colors and shapes*Kids LOVE them*Stay together well and don't fall apartCons-*hard for little littles to snap pieces togetherI am very happy with this purchase and would buy them again if I needed to5from animals to fences to buildings to pretend things like yesterday he made a "terminator" which apparently was for ...My 3 year old plays with these ALL the time for several months now...we dont use them for math yet since he is too young. I am not a fan of legos, so I bought these to give him the building block play that he was needing. He has created sooo many imaginings with these blocks...from animals to fences to buildings to pretend things like yesterday he made a "terminator" which apparently was for making balloons. If you have a creative boy that wants to build, these are a great small (as in amount) to start that. When I first gave them to him at a little after 2.5 yrs old, he would get really frustrated that he couldnt make things he was wanting and would get mad at use if we didnt make things how he wanted them...so I took them away for a about a month long break. Which was perfect, cus at more like 3 years old he was able to physically build better and felt more confident in his creations thus no more fits about them...unless 1 year old brother touched them :) ...but thats another story :)5Quality + Value = Happy teacher/kidI purchased these for educational purposes. Ten cubes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, white, brown, and black are included. Each 1" cube has one protruding face that can connect to every other (inverted) side of other cubes with ease. The plastic quality is good, the pieces do not stick, but connect and disconnect with ease without being too difficult (an adult could unsnap two cubes with one hand). The corners are squared, but not too sharp to cause pain. Even when squeezing opposite corners of a block, it doesn't hurt, compared to others. After 3 months of use (4 days/wk), they're still like new (strength of holding power doesn't diminish). We store them in a gallon sized zip-lock bag. For $9, this deal is unbeatable. I wish I would have found them sooner.5Awesome Snaps! My kids love this product! We use it for math and just for fun :) They easily snap together, and are of pleasant feel and comfortable in their tiny hands. See attached pictures. The Batman home furniture is done by my 5 year old. He is also the one figuring out addends to make an eight.5Sturdy and cuteI bought these because other brands similar to this had bad reviews for inconsistency when it came to the blocks snapping together and coming a part. Which I believed because my grandma has a set similar to these at her house and they had that exact problem- some wouldn't even stay snapped together and some were really hard to pull apart or even snap together. Also, I really like how the blocks have different cutout shapes on them. There are hexagons, pentagons, squares, and triangles in each color which isn't vitally important but I liked that extra detail. I'll probably incorporate these into sensory play with dough for imprints because of the shapes. These are a Christmas gift for my sons so I haven't been able to see how they hold up. But I did unsnap and re snap the blocks in the bag and was satisfied with the results. I'll post more pictures and edit my review after Christmas.5Great and useful math toolGood learning tool to help your child with math. I was having trouble getting my son to understand math while going over his homework. I decided I needed help and started looking for a way to do just that. In my research I came across the mathlink cubes and decided to give them a try. I'm so glad I did because having a physical product that you can use to show them say 10-4=6 was just what we needed. It helped him by being able to see he had so many blocks and could figure it out by adding or taking them away. This product helped me teach my son math and I'm thankful I found them.5Fantastic Creative Toy!My kids surprised me by asking for these. They have them at daycare, and they wanted some for home, too. I have to say, they were worth every penny - so far they've been turned into rabbits, cats, all kinds of pokemon, birds, buildings, plates, carrots, jelly beans, towers, wands - and that's just the first two weeks! As for size, they're basically square, slightly larger than your standard 2x2 Lego brick. The colors you get seem to be truly random, we have more of some colors than others.I'd suggest getting more than one set. Two or three are better - they can do more with them.5Great for Teaching Emerging Math SkillsI bought these as a great educational Christmas gift for my son that would also be fun for him. He can use them to practice his emerging math skills, and have fun building with them at the same time. This is a great set, and will help him with a variety of different math skills. I may get another set to help him with more advanced math skills as he gets older. I love how this doubles as an educational toy and a building toy, and you can create games from it that are obviously educational, but also let a child play with them in ways they don't even realize they are learning from. This is definitely a great product, especially for children with emerging mathematical skills.5
