Customer Reviews

I liked the old one that changed between tracing and memorizingI liked the old one that changed between tracing and memorizing. I feel like there are too many buttons now. Too many choices. I liked the original since it was just letter writing. Sometimes I feel like toys need to be simpler as to not distract the young child. I would rather they learn than be entertained by unnecessary additional features. 3Awful, Frustrating, and Dark!Awful Product! Terribly frustrating for both me and my reticent to write child. The screen doesn t pick up the sensitivity of the pencil half the time and made ME rewrite lines over and over again until they were correct, let alone my poor kid. Also the screen is so ridiculously dark it s practically useless unless you re under a sunlamp. Furthermore, in the free draw mode shouts the word Pencil! at you every single time you touch the pencil to the screen; so unless you can free draw without picking up the pencil, it s an extremely anxiety producing experience, and is nothing like real writing or drawing. Please do not subject your child to this awful piece of technology as an excuse for real writing. We had been so hopeful about it, but returned it within a day. 1Save your child s sanity...don t buy thisI ignored the negative reviews regarding how difficult it is for a child to actually use this device. I thought my son wasn t putting enough pressure on the pen to trace the letters...I was wrong. I pressed so hard on that screen that I thought I would crack the screen. My son is 4 and got so frustrated that I put it up for almost 2 weeks and brought it out tonight to practice his letters. Guess what, now the sound doesn t work. Yes, I changed the batteries. And, yes, I checked all of the settings. Do yourself a favor, save your money and your child s sanity. 1But it looks and works good. This is a Christmas gift from Santa to my four-year-old daughter. I mess with it while it was in the box and it works good great volume you can adjust the volume. The pen is easy to write was. I just wish I had a lighted display so you could see a little bit better. But it looks and works good. 5Excellent Educational Toy for ToddlersMy children went bananas over this toy! My 3yo had been writing for a few months, but as soon as my 2yo started playing with it, he quickly met his older brother's previous writing level! I love all the features, the friendly voice, and how much my kids learn from this toy. Also, I really appreciate the sound control on this. It is not too loud to take on car trips. So happy I bought this! 5Nice Concept In A Bright Laboratory Beta Tested By AdultsGreat device if -ONLY- it were able to be easily visible without being in an extremely brightly lit room that does not cast -any- shadows so the child can see the small touch-pad with the bulky Mr. Pencil (my eyes get tired from straining after 5-10 min. without excessive lighting). The 'Contrast' can be changed with a +1 or -1 so do not expect anything from that (bad to worse). The pencil is nice but a bit awkward with the cartoon face bulging out and interfering with the child being able to hold the pencil semi-properly. Again, very odd that an educational company overrides common sense and ease of use for goofy marketing. The string attaching the pencil is in the middle of the device so no worries for left or right handed children. A finger can be used as well but that defeats the purpose of developing writing skills. LOTS of activities (Uppercase/Lowercase Letters, Numbers 1-10, Only (6) Shapes, Phonics & Basic Spelling (3 letter words) Difficulty 1-3), and you can Free-Draw (sort of). There is a 'Repeat' button which is awesome since I have a hard time correctly hearing what the device is saying (letter & word sounds). So when it says, "Spell C-A-T", and it sounds like C-A-P or M-A-P or P-A-T or F-A-T you can check-it ('Repeat') after getting it wrong. Would be great if they had more shapes and surprised there are so few from an educational company that teaches a lot more shapes on their DVD's/Tutorials, and learning to draw shapes is a great way to develop hand-eye coordination as well. In addition it can be a less frustrating than working with the alphabet and at least a change, "Shapes Are Everywhere." Learned that from their DVD.. =DOurs arrived with the batteries already in it and the device was -very- warm to the touch in seventy+ degree weather. So not sure why they would ship it with batteries installed when the device will sit in extreme temps of hot/cold. Glad we were home when the package arrived. Scary to think what would have happened if it was left on the front porch in the full sun for hours. =,(Felt like it deserved (2) Stars as it is so frustrating buying and wasting money on educational material/devices that are seriously lacking in so many basic areas. Like -NO- Subtitles on their DVD's, Hinged Devices that snap off, and the worst is when an electronic device forces you to replace batteries that are not even 1/3 used (1.5v AA and stops when it drops to 1v). If our lil one could leave a review I am sure he would give it a (4) Star rating. So leaving a (3) Star Rating seems fair. =P_Nice Concept In A Bright Laboratory Beta Tested By Adults_ 3Great ConceptWonderful idea for a product. My toddler can work on letters, both uppercase and lowercase, numbers, shapes and spelling. The device shows how to write each item one line at a time.It is very hard to see the screen, it s way too dark. The setting only allow you to make the background darker or lighter but it s hardly noticeable. Whenever a letter, number or shape has a large curve (circle, zero, O, Q, etc) the toy becomes very sensitive and makes you start over if you don t do it exact and quickly enough. My toddler knows how to draw a circle but the system faults him and makes him start over because he tries to slowly and carefully follow the guide. So it might be a bit too sensitive. Otherwise I hope to see it help with his beginning writing. 3Son loves itImage is too light to see even when the contrast is set on high. But my son loves it 4Fun educational toy that provides a great introduction to shapes, letters and numbers.Mr. Pencil s Scribble and Write is a favorite toy of my 3 year old daughter. I wasn't sure how she would take to this because she has a tablet but she really likes it and spends time playing with it. She enjoys carrying the scribble and wrote toy by the handle, it's a perfect fit for her little hands. She likes tracing the shapes, letters and numbers. She can use the attached pencil or her finger to trace. I like that it is a educational toy and really think that it has helped with her letter recognition. It is easy for her to use, I showed her once and she can turn it on and knows how to change from shapes to letters to numbers and games. I really like how it says the letters name, shows the letter, shows how to write it, says the sound the letter makes and has a cute picture of something that starts with the letter. With the numbers it shows you the number, has you draw it and then has you count it. With the shapes it says the shapes name, has you touch it, has you draw it and then shows a picture with the shape. There are games if you hit the spelling button that on the first level you pick the letter that makes the sound. On level two it has them tap a letter to fill in the blank to spell the word then on level three it ask them to use the letter buttons to spell a word. These are a little advanced for my three year old but I help her with this and it shows me this toy will challenge her and continue to grow with her. There is a free draw button that allows you to draw pictures of anything you want (my daughter really enjoys this). The setting button allows you to turn off the background music (parents you will love this feature, I highly recommend it!), adjust the darkness of the screen and recalibrate. Overall I am pleased with this toy, my only complaint is that when writing the letters some times she gets frustrated because it keep making a sound and won't recognize the letter if she lifts the pencil or her finger before completing the letter leading her to have to redo the letter or taking multiple tries. Other than that we are very happy with this toy and I feel she will get better at this over time. It is built well and has taken quite a few tumbles while still going strong. 4It's okay. Bad design. This item functions as described but the design could be so much better. The screen to write on is very small in comparison to the large pencil. This makes it difficult for beginners because you can't see what you are writing or the tip of the pencil easily. Also we had bought this thinking it would be great for long car rides..... BUT the screen doesn't have a back light and the images are not very dark. So.... unless the lighting is perfect it's also difficult to see. Honestly considering the cost and design of this item you are better off just buying a tablet and using a letter tracing app. I would not recommend. 3
