Customer Reviews

Built this for a still living 1941 Wake Island battle Vet.This 1/72 scale model is actually the same mold used for the F4F-4 with six machine gun ports. The early F4F-3 deployed to Wake Island just before the Pearl Harbor attack only had four guns. But the model is still close to what my great friend remembers of the Marine Squadron VMF-211 that he helped service and keep flying during the US Marines heroic resistance during the first days of World War II. He was a 17 year old Navy ground crewman trained to service the PBY-5 Catalina flying boats that would land in the Wake lagoon near the PanAm China Clipper pier. I was able to finish this model in the exact same paint scheme numbering and insignia placement that was used on VMF-211 Wildcats and putty over the outer machine gun ports that the Wake F4F-3's did not have. The model box top shows the pre-10/1941 neutrality paint scheme which was changed during the last two months of 1941, but the kit is flexible enough to be able to build any F4F-3 version.5Nice simple kit, but not the F4F-3The kit, in and of itself, is nice. There are only 17 parts but the "lumps and bumps" are quite visible. Although, the recessed panel lines seem a little shallow. It has two canopy configurations - open and closed. The decals in the kit are for two versions of the aircraft and are protected in a sealed sleeve. The directions are on a single folded glossy sheet, printed in color and show a straight forward procedure for assembly with painting options on the back of the directions. So what is wrong? The kit is described as a F4F-3 Wildcat, but it is really an F4F-4. The F4F-3 had four .50 caliber machine gun, this kit has six (F4F-4). The F4F-3 was equipped with non-folding wings, but the wings' recessed panel lines show the structure of the folding wing F4F-4 version of the Wildcat. I already have a detailed 1/72 scale Airfix model of the F4F-4 and wanted an F4F-3 for a different project. If you are keen to build a Grumman F4F-3, this is not the kit to get, unless, you want to spend time re-detailing and re-scribing it to produce an F4F-3.2Nice and SimpleKind of simplistic. I missed the fact that it was snap together, but it ended up looking nice. Good beginner kit.3
