    Perfect chess set!Since I love playing chess, after moving to the US I felt strongly like I am lacking a chess board/set. I decided that this time I will be getting the best chess set out there and will just take care of it very well. I came across this one and though it seemed a bit pricy, I stayed true to my initial plan of getting it.When it arrived I was super excited and a bit scared that it will not be good enough and I will regret my decision of wasting money on a chess set, but fortunately all my fears dissipated as soon as I opened the pack. I was so happy!!!This chess set is practically perfect. The pieces are heavy and well-balances, the roll up chess board lays perfectly still and flat, and the bag is just on point for transporting it from one place to another. The set includes extra queens of each color. The bag has several sections for pieces, the roll up board and for other items you would possibly want to carry with you.I am very happy with this purchase, though it is a bit pricy, but it does worth every penny! 5Good Chess set, but do not trust the advertised specificationsBought this on 2018-12Item: B009RSFOF2Item Weight Claimed to be 4.41lbs. Actual weight 3.9 lbs (weighed it)These are item weight. Not shipping weights. So, no confusion there.This is the second set I bought on amazon. Both had misleading specs. The products are not bad. But I bought a "weighted chess set" based on its "weight". When the weight is less that advertised, I feel cheated. Moreover, a replacement that amazon offered is not going to get me heavier pieces. A return and refund leaves me without a chess set.I no longer feel confident on the specs for chess pieces on amazon. Vendors seem to be able to get away by selling product sub-par to the advertised specs.I would have rated 4 stars had the product not been deceptively advertised. The pieces are good (not as heavy as claimed), board is good. The bag is very very flimsy. I doubt that the zippers will last more than 3 months. I would not be surprised if the internal fabric gave way within a year. 2Great chess board! Read review to find out consI'm 10 years old, and I love playing chess with my dad. This chess board didn't only come with a heavy green tournament bag to store your board & pieces, but the packaging was amazing too! It held the white and black pieces in separate ziplock bags. The strength of the pieces was phenomenal ! If you try to knock over a piece it will go back to its normal position, unless you actually tip it over purposely.But the reason why I give this board four stars is because - THE BOARD IS VERY UNEVEN. Because it's rolled up, the board doesn't stay straight on our table. The ends kind of curl up a bit. BUT - DON'T RETURN IT YET.I found a way to keep the board straight. You could place several heavy, thick books on it overnight, and your board will look GOOD AS NEW.As for the tournament bag, the zippers are a bit cheaply made, as you can tell, but overall the board and pieces fit perfectly in the bag. You can bring some extra things, like snacks or a water bottle, because the bag is a fairly large size.BONUS: The pieces come with an EXTRA QUEEN for both white and black if your pawn is lucky enough to get across the board safely! 4Cannot use because of toxic smellI was very excited to receive this set, but the off-gassing, particularly from the board and the bag is terrible and even after weeks outside the toxic smell is too much for me to want to use this. I washed the pieces with dish soap several times and they do not smell much anymore, but the bag and the board continue to smell too strongly even after being washed thoroughly and left outside for weeks. As I've opened this and washed the pieces I guess I own it, but unless the smell goes away I'll never use it and will probably throw it out eventually. Very disappointed overall, the pieces are ok, but not the quality I had with an old set that was similar in style, material, and weight. 1Nice Set...just what I wanted.I'm new to chess, have had a few of the plastic piece/paper board chess kits, but I wanted something better. The pieces and the board are bigger than the cheap games of course, and in my opinion, perfect sized ("standard size" according to pros).The pieces are of good weight, I wouldn't want them any heavier or lighter...glad they are weighted as they are.The vinyl board is like a diner place mat. If you keep it rolled with the squares facing out, it lays pretty flat unrolled, with minor "arching" at spots. I wasn't a fan of the green at first, I considered other colors, but green seems to be the standard, and now that I've played on it a few times, it's not bad, I guess the contrast to the piece colors is nice.The case is what I expected for a vinyl-lined nylon fabric case, it's nothing fancy but nice enough, and the layout keeps the pieces, board, and my clock secured well.No complaints on the pieces...no chips, weights and felt bottoms in tact...there were some dark smudges on the white pieces, which rubbed off with a wet paper towel and some elbow grease.Yeah there was a strong vinyl smell at first, but I left the board and the bag lay open in a sun-lit/window-lit area for about a week, and the smell has dissipated. Now it just smells "new"! :)For an affordable, basic, and full size set with "real" pieces, this kit is great. Would buy again. 5Would have been excellent if heavier pieces and better quality zippers, but still good enoughHave been playing chess for a long time. Ordered two of these. They are good quality, and the weight is acceptable, although I wish it was a bit heavier. The clock pocket is large enough for most clocks. The extra queen is a must have. I gave it a 4 star because the zippers could be higher quality, but no complaints yet. 4Great Chess Set! Very glad I selected this one.Several things that are important to me:1) The board must unroll flat, and stay unrolled without curling at the ends. Does it perfectly2) The pieces must be heavy enough that you can play on carpet and walk around next to it without the pieces flying all over the place. Again, perfect.Bonus to me was the carrying case, which has a couple extra pouches in it too. I'm very happy with this chess set, it is exactly what I was looking for. 5Check for a better set.I had a roommate years ago who played chess all the time. He had a set similar to this with weighted pieces and a vinyl board that laid completely flat, and while I didn't like the roll up board (but I've come to appreciate it), I have always remembered the look and feel of the pieces. We played tons of games, but I only beat him once. Fast forward more years than I'd like to admit, and I'm looking for a set similar to the one my old roommate had. I settled on this set because of good reviews, and I couldn't wait for it to be brought to my house by my friendly neighborhood delivery guy.When it arrived a couple of days later, the outer shipping box had taken a beating. No big deal. But, upon opening the outer shipping box, I found the box containing my actual chess set had been opened. I don't mean that it had come open in shipping somehow. I mean that someone had obviously opened this set previously. 'Well, who cares as long as everything is here and accounted for?' I thought to myself trying to be reasonable. I rolled the board out and it didn't lay flat. I was starting to get rather unhappy. The vinyl board comes rolled up, but there's no support for the board in shipping, so the board gets pressed flat while it sits rolled up in its packaging. Willing to give this set one last chance, I took out the pieces and started setting up the board. I was happy with the pieces, and they were exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, the pieces, despite being weighted, sat leaning every which way on the wavy vinyl board. The last straw was a missing black pawn.I did try to check the green carry bag for the missing pawn. It's wasn't there. As for the bag, the zippers were all zipped halfway with what should have been the zipped portion pulled open. All of the zippers in the bag were like that. They behaved after I unzipped and then zipped them back up, but the words "Durable" or "Quality" did not come to mind.I returned the set. At least the return process was painless because Amazon is awesome. I'm still shopping for the chess set I'm looking for. Your experience may be different, but I won't be trying to buy another set from this seller, or actually anything else from this seller at all. I really hate to sound so negative, but, wow, nothing about this product was what I hoped it would be. 1Nice set with really nice carrying bagLost my older (1970) tournament set and needed a replacement. Couldn't get the exact same one, obviously, but this one comes very close. Pieces are well molded and the weighting seems correct, without rattles. What really makes me happy is the carrying case. Internally there are zippered compartments. One for each color of pieces. One for a chess clock, and a full length pouch for the board. Everything stays in place and is reasonably protected. Initially there was a LOT of odor from the vinyl board, but a few hours of open air got rid of 99% of it. A little bit more is created anytime to roll the board, but that seems to be diminishing quickly. I can say that my old roll-up board still had an odor 40 years later, so I don't think it ever goes away completely. 5Nice set! Good weight, sturdy, great size and quality overallNice value- you get more than you pay for. Good weight, sturdy, great board and piece size. Pieces are cast in a substantial satin finish plastic and have very minor blemishes but not on obvious parts. More than adequate >1 mil board lays flat- roll up is great feature to have more real estate plus it fits into a nice carry bag, which has one zippered pouch for each army, an extra queen of each color, zippered pouch for clock and/or or notebook etc., pen slot and business card sized clear sleeve. If you are upgrading from a smaller "toy store" set with a cardboard board then you will totally enjoy playing with this set. It could easily be the last set you ever buy if you do not abuse it. Even the outside box has terrific easy to understand basic rules and great visuals that are useful/enjoyable to the beginner or novice. Overall very nice set. I would buy again. Re: Some have commented about the odor of the vinyl board. I have a more than average sensitive sense smell (I ate a whole foods raw plant based diet for 14 years in a row!) and while there was a slight odor it only lasted a fewhours. I set it up on my granite kitchen counter, left it there with the pieces and the next day any odor was down to zero.Update: A few days later: Correction: there IS more odor when you move the board, especially if you bend or roll it. That stretches the "vinyl substrate" and releases vapor. It is not a problem but it is noticeable. When I have a moment I shall wash it gently with soap and water to see what happens. 5
