    Mediocre quality, instructions really lacking, but good customer service from ElencoPicked this up to start learning to solder. The instructions are very poorly written and are missing some detail. I recommend looking online for tips on soldering rather than the instructions for this kit. I had to buy this twice, my first kit never worked after setting it up and following all the steps, grabbed a second kit and halfway through putting it together, a piece broke so I am waiting on a replacement part from Elenco (who has good customer service, if you break or lose a part just e-mail them and they'll ship you a replacement.)Once kit I bought came with a soldering iron and the second kit didn't, so I don't know what is standard, but keep that in mind when you order. You'll also want to get a 9V battery to power the radio. You'll need some wire cutters to clean up excess leads, and maybe a solder sucker to fix mistakes. The amount of solder you get in the kit seems to be just enough to complete it, but if you make a ton of mistakes you may need some extra. 3I felt like a frickin' genius man.When I assembled this all by myself I felt like I could solder anything in the world. IT'S NOT EVEN THAT COMPLICATED! So don't be discouraged! It's really great for learning how exactly circuits work and plus you can listen to the Grande Ole Opry like your mam and paps did back in the 30's. Set down with a pipe, some high quality tobacco, with a scotch glass full of your favorite liquor. Make sure your soldering iron is off and your at least 30 feet away from it. Set back and relax on a Saturday night and sing along to "You are my Sunshine." This could end up being an all-nighter but you know what? That's okay because you assembled this all by yourself or with an adult if your a young whipper snapper. In all seriousness though I'd recommend, no second thoughts involved the radio actually works too and I live in a very backwoods town in Georgia so that tells you that much. 5It's OK for the price but low quality PCBI got this to teach my 11 year old nephew how to solder and how to recognize and read resistors, capacitors etc.It served it's purpose. The solder that comes with it is very low quality - takes long time to get it going even with my professional soldering iron.The instructions is relatively easy to follow, if you know your electronics. I encountered a few problems:1) few of the mounting positions on the board didn't have anything going to it but the pictures in the instructions were full of parts. So, the design must have changed a little since the instructions were printed2) The PCB was low quality - it delaminated at a few spots making it difficult to get good contact3) The fit of battery compartment is terrible and partially blocks a few of the soldering joints4) tuning the radio is a pain and totally non-intuitive. You press one button to reset it to beginning and then press the other botton which starts an auto search to next signal. There is no way to manually step the band.5) The antenna contact was bad. I had to improvise and put in some conductive tape under it.It served it's purpose but not willing to buy any more of the kits due to low quality. 3Great Dad and Son (8y.o.) Project -- Works well, too!I'm an Amateur Radio operator and I bought this kit for my son to get him interested in all things radio. He's 8 years old.It took us a couple of hours to put together. He read the instructions, identified the needed capacitor, resistor, or diode and placed them on the PCB. I did the soldering. We talked about what each component did and how it was used in the radio. I even quizzed him at the end and he was proud about how much he knew about the different parts.People say that it's not very sensitive. Nope. That's not the case -- it's the antenna that is the weak link in this system. (By the way, it's ALWAYS THE ANTENNA!) Using the stock antenna we easily picked up a couple of stations outside of the house and only one inside. When I touched the end of the antenna to my 102 foot wire dipole antenna the radio came to life. My point? Rig up a better antenna, just a long wire will do, and enjoy the results.The main point is not to build a HiFi stereo, but to learn about electronics and this kit delivered. 5Excellent kit to teach young people the basics of electronic theory, component identification, and assembly.I bought two of these kits for my niece and nephew to assemble. This was their first electronic project. All I did was to teach them basic soldering skills, and how to use a multi-meter. Both kits worked perfectly immediately after assembly, no issues at all.I used to work for Elenco nearly 40 years ago. At that time they were making "Yap Boxes" for the CB radio market. It was great to see that they are now offering very well thought out electronic project kits. 5PCB appears to be of poor quality.In attempt to solder the components onto the board and trimming the excess off the leads the tracks on the board would separate and break off the board. Unable to finish project.Edit: I was able to scrape away the coating over the tracks and reconnect three of the many broken pads that separated from the board in order to get the thing functional. Radio now works. For a solder project designed to help those like me to learn how to solder I feel I should not have had to do this. I stand by my original score of 2/5 stars. I've soldered together six velleman solder projects and never had an issue with the pcb itself. Can't say I would ever try elenco projects again unless they improve their quality.Now, the radio itself is quite finicky but that could be due to all the issues on the copper side of the board I experienced. I only fixed enough of the problems to make it functional since I didn't want to make it worse messing with it too much. The thing is incredibly loud though. I can't turn the knob past a quarter turn without it being heard from the next county. Instructions were very clear and even quiz you at the end if you're interested in that. The instructions are the only thing that got a star out of me for this review.Summary: instructions awesome. Solder project itself needs quality review of pcb board because the board is rubbish. 2Poorly made producer and sloppy Quality Control.Having 30+ years in electronic repair at board level, I was disappointed after starting this project with my Grandson. As with many other reviews I also see that the copper cladding is not well secured to the board and the pads come loose easily and may tear the trace. My biggest complaint is the quality control of the product. Im glad I caught that the main IC that's solderd on the board already had a huge solder bridge across the pins (See pic) I was able to remove the fault and get the radio togetherExcellent job on the manual though! 2Not a beginner's radio kit.First, I could not get this kit to work. I am not an electronics wiz, and thought I could learn a bit about FM radios and hone my skills with soldering. The manual that comes with this kit is very detailed and on the positive side, the instructions for placing the components onto the board was very clear, and the board is clearly labeled for component placement. The manual gives a technical overview of how FM radios work, but I could not follow nor learn very much about FM radios - but the tutorial is not for a beginner, they missed the mark. One part of the kit was surprisingly bad - the assembly includes a 9-volt battery holder that is attached to the rear of the board - and it stupidly does not fit. Someone got something very wrong here - it just screws over a portion of the board that has the ends of numerous components that have been soldered on.The assembly is basically soldering a large number of small components onto the board - about 36 different electrical components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, and even an 8-pin IC socket. That's well over 40 soldering connections, and somewhere I goofed and the unit did not work.It was too much work and too little fun - and nothing to show for my effort. 2Exactly as expectedI've always wanted to learn to solder so I finally bought myself a soldering station and a few kits. The first kit I built was the Elenco Practice Solder Kit so that was my only previous soldering experience when I built this.A few notes:I used a Hakko FX888d soldering station set at 750 degrees.I used my own solder rather than the included lead-free solder.I took me a few hours to put together one afternoon.The negatives:The radio is very simple and can only tune via the scan, so it can be tricky to find a specific station.If you follow the order in the manual you end up installing tall components before some of the smaller ones, which can make it difficult to solder the smaller ones flush against the board if you have the board just sitting on the table.The sheet of resistors and capacitors makes it difficult to find the proper one because the component often covers the number and they aren't in numerical order.The actual radio receiver section is an surface mount IC that is already attached to the board, so you aren't really building the whole radio and learning all the theory of the different sections. The audio amplifier is also an IC. The documentation does try to explain how a radio works but I didn't study the section much.I am occasionally getting a clicking sound and I'm not sure if it is just due to the design of the radio or a flaw in my installation.The positives:I got the kit working first try with no problems.Comes with everything except general soldering equipmentYou first build the audio section and then test before finishing the RF section, which could help save some headaches troubleshooting.The audio is very loud and clear and the volume knob works great.There are a good variety of components to get practice with.The manual explains how to install the more unique pieces that a beginner may not understand.The instruction manual walks you through everythingThe kit is inexpensive.Radio reception is adequate.The volume knob has a nice click to turn the radio on when you turn the volume up from 0 (the potentiometer is also a switch which is neat to see if you have never seen how one works).Overall this is a good kit for a beginner who wants to get practice soldering and end up with something useful. As I write this I am listening to a local baseball game and the quality is just as good as using a regular radio. 5Excellent kit for introduction to soldering, Just "okay" for teaching radio designI'm 28 with a fair amount of radio and electronics experience, though I hadn't soldered much in a while. I tried this kit for fun and to reacquaint myself with soldering before working on a more delicate project I have in mind. I found this kit to be very well-designed and easy to assemble. For the price, it is excellent. I had to detract one star because my kit included the incorrect screw for attaching the battery holder (not a big deal, but still annoying) and because I think there are other Elenco radio kits I'd recommend above this one.This kit would be great for a teenager's introduction to soldering (easy to follow assembly instructions, clearly labeled components and PCB, large soldering pads, a fun end-goal of producing your own radio), but probably just "okay" as an educational tool in teaching radio design to a young engineer. I understood the circuit descriptions and educational aspects found in the instruction manual, but I'm already familiar with those concepts. I think it'd be difficult to understand a lot of the provided circuit description and radio theory if I wasn't already familiar with the information. Another thing limiting this kit as an educational tool in radio fundamentals is the inclusion of an integrated circuit in the core of the receiver design. This makes everything more abstract from an educational perspective.I just checked around on Amazon, and there are several other Elenco radio kits available. Some of those are specifically "transistor" versions which involve no integrated circuits. That may mean twice as many components for you to solder, but it'd probably make for a better educational tool in teaching radio fundamentals.Two final tips:The kit features large soldering pads and lead-free solder. I support both of these choices for a beginner's kit (lots of space for your soldering iron, and no lead around children), but that combination can actually make soldering tricky because large pads sink more heat, and lead-free solder doesn't melt until higher temperatures. You'll probably want to use a chisel-tip on your soldering iron, and wet the tip with a bit of solder to help with heat transfer.If you have access to an oscilloscope, this is a fun little kit to probe around! The carrier frequency (~100 MHz) may be outside your scope's bandwidth, but most of the receiver circuitry operates at an intermediate frequency of 70 kHz, and the audio portion will be around ~1 kHz, both of which you can easily measure. So you can observe the ~1mV frequency-modulated 70 kHz IF signal on one channel, and on a second channel bring up the ~0.1V audio signal going to the speaker. Or probe anywhere along the chain rather easily. Fun stuff. 4
