Customer Reviews

Poor customer service, but there aren't many options in the game-show buzzer marketI like this a lot in terms of what it does, but I have some concerns about quality and customer support. This arrived and two of the buzzer buttons were non-functional. I emailed the manufacturer and they told me to make sure I was using Energizer batteries. That was extremely irritating. They may as well have told me to turn in a circle three times while quacking like a duck and the thing to work. The buttons didn't work in any ports as the other buttons all worked in all the ports. The buttons were clearly DOA and they didn't care. When I told them this, they told me to return it to Amazon, which I did. I had a replacement sent because I really wanted a game show buzzer for my classroom and didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars for what seems like a fairly simple device. The replacement works (so far), but I have only used it a few times in my class; I'm still a bit nervous about the longevity of the item from my experience and some of the other reviews. If it breaks, I'll probably search elsewhere for a better quality item. I wouldn't ever purchase an item from this company again because they didn't seem to care about a customer, but in terms of game show buzzers, it's this or options that cost 2-8x more money. The cords are very short, maybe 4 feet from the center. Your students will have to come to the front and will have to get cozy as they take their buzzers. It's not a deal breaker, but just know how close you and students will have to stand around this. 3Great EGGSpectationsThis product worked great at a company party for buzzing in on a musical trivia contest. The connections between the buzzers and the main unit use a standard 3.5mm jack so extending out to 25 feet was easy and inexpensive. It works great for a buzz in type need with multiple people and worked flawlessly for us. It was a fun gadget that we will use again. It has a random selection mode as well where one egg will light up randomly but we did not use that feature. I did test it and it does work. This is a fun little gadget for kids to adults. 5Wow--fun and educational! Here's how to order extension cables.Wow, this game rocks! I watched another teacher use one to turn his bored class of high schoolers into a fully-engaged, excited, laughing, and active set of learners. I highly recommend it.Mine just arrived from Amazon, and as other reviewers pointed out, the cables are about 4 feet. But not to worry -- there's an easy solution. Just plug in a set of 3.5 mm jack audio extension cables and you can get any length you need. Amazon has a wide variety, so try typing "audio cable 3.5 mm male female" into the Amazon search cell and you should get a good list. I've used the 6 foot stereo version with good results.[Update in March 2011] I've been using this for several months while substitute teaching, and it's been a lifesaver. I form the kids into 6 groups, usually simply by their desk row. They then write on 3x5 cards their own questions and answers about whatever they are studying in the class. I encourage slightly harder questions that would take 5-15 seconds to solve. I then select one question from each group and play the game. (Of course, groups don't get to answer their own question.)During game play, one student from each group writes their answer on a 12x9 inch white board (also available from Amazon), holds it facing the ceiling (so no other groups can see), then a different student pushes the button. Once all teams have written an answer, then I reveal the correct answer. To keep it fun and non-combative, I avoid keeping an overall score. The whole lesson usually takes about 30 minutes. As a final piece of advice, I recommend creating 6 kits in large zip lock bags to pass out to the first student in each row. In each kit is a stack of blank cards, white board, dry erase pen, board eraser and Eggspert push button. Certain teams also get extensions as follows (Pink & purple each get 2 of the 6 foot extensions. Orange & blue get one 6 foot extension each. Yellow and green get no extensions because I set up the unit in the middle.) Orignally I used longer extensions, which tangled easily, so stick with 6 footers and unplug all connections before having the students return them to the kit bags.Have fun! 5DisappointedReceived this item in a timely manner after ordering it to use with my middle school history classes for a fun alternative review game...but quickly discovered that the "pink" buzzer button does not work. I have made do with five working buzzers instead of six. Just tried the "scrambled eggs" function this week and discovered it does not work either, plus now the "purple" buzzer button is only working sporadically. We may soon be down to only four workable buzzers out of six and only in "game show" function. Definitely disappointing and not worth the $$ spent on it. 1Perfect!I'm a teacher, and proudly so. Most purchasers and reviewers for this product are also teachers, I suspect. I sponsor a 6th grade scholars' bowl team and have found that the purpose-built quiz bowl buzzers to be expensive and cheaply made. The ones I've borrowed from other teachers are many times the price of this unit and flimsy. This unit is well made. The wiring is of a heavy gauge, the flexible plastic covers are thick, the press switches are heavy duty and feel solid in use, clicking solidly when pressed. The individual "egg" units have a removable base access held in place by a screw. I can use this to repair the unit if it breaks. The entire unit feels quality made. All this for about a fifth of the price of a cheaply made purpose-built quiz bowl unit. I bought the Model #7883 Classic, which was about half the price of the 7880 unit. I don't know the difference between the two units, but it doesn't matter since I'm well pleased with this one and cost is important since I paid for this out of my own pocket. One more thing. Actually two. I like the shorter 4 ft cords and feel no need to extend the cord length. My desks are pushed together during practice and extra cord length would just get in the way. I also like the battery operated base. You don't have to plug it in. It's one less cord to trip over. 5Good value in the ring-in function but firmware quirks can impair gameplayThe hardware seems adequate for modest, responsible use. Not flimsy, but hardly industrial either. Appropriate to the cost. The primary purpose of our use is to determine the first game contestant to ring in while locking out others. It works well for this. There are 6 contestant buttons available for ringing in. There is an additional button -- the moderator button -- that resets the locked out state to allow another round of ringing in.In addition to the 'ring-in' mode, there is a roulette style mode for randomly selecting a participant. This mode doesn't simply instantly indicate the selection but goes through a bit of drama by cycling the lights at a gradually slowing rate until coming to a stop on final light. The utility of the device is marred slightly by the method of selecting these modes. There is no dedicated slide switch for this. The mode is selected by presses of the moderator button when the device is in a particular state. If the device is in the lockout state after a player has rung-in, the moderator button button sets the state to allow players to ring in. If the moderator button is pressed when the device is in the ring-in enabled state, the mode will change from ring-in to random and the whole sequence of rotating lights that settles down to the elected player begins immediately with that press. When the light pattern has run its course and the blinking has stopped, then and only then the moderator button may be used to change to ring-in mode. An immediate second press of the moderator button at that point would repeat the random mode selection process. The difficulty arises when ring-in mode is active and the lock-out state is disabled but no one actually rings in. If we want to remain in the ring-in mode but enable the locked-out state for the duration of the reading of a question with the intention of then hitting the moderator button to disable the lockout state and allow responses, this is not possible without cycling through the roulette routine. This delay certainly upsets the rhythm of a lively game.Workarounds for this include asking a player to ring-in even when there is no response expected simply to return the device to a state that other buttons are locked out and can be enabled with a press of the moderator button at the right time. As a second workaround, rather than confuse players, it could be better for the moderator to have access to an unused player button in addition to their own white button for this purpose.Ideally, the play style would be selected by a slide switch on the console.Overall, the device serves the purpose of game play where there is a need to select the first player to ring-in following a start signal and locks out attempts before the signal or after the first. It is of a reasonable quality for the price. The one flaw is the potential for interrupted game-play due to means used for mode selection. 4LOVE this deviceAs a high school English teacher, I've been looking for some kind of device that I could use during our class review competitions. I needed a buzzer system that would let me know who buzzed in first. This is exactly what I needed. I used it for our final exam review competition where I pitted half the class against the other. It was very clear who hit hit his/her colored buzzer first as it would light up and make a noise until I used the master button to reset it. LOVE this device. 5Egg-cellent game at Easter!Egg-cellent! I used this on Easter for my Sunday school classes. We had students in grades 1 - 6 and played "Jeopardy". The system looks like colored eggs, so this was perfect. Easy to connect they cords, put in the batteries and we were ready to play. The children had a blast and asked to play the game again. The egg buzzers are very sturdy and easy enough for the students to push down to buzz in with their answer. Thank You! 5I love this thingI love this thing, I'm not a teacher....I'm actually a game show host (for my family's game nights) and I pull this little guy out for games that require contestants to 'buzz' in....I can't tell you how much fun we have with "real" jeopardy, family feud, and a host of other original games. 3+ years ang going strong!I imagine most who are interested are teachers so I would add that as a former student and as a host to many age groups, this would be great for the classroom... 5Fun and durable.I was a little worried when I ordered this item, as some of the reviewers were not totally pleased with it. However, after using it for a couple of days (including two family get-togethers), all of my fears were laid to rest. The buttons seem to be quite durable (one of my fears) and although it looks like a kid's toy, it's really a well-built item. The first day, I loaded a bunch of TV theme songs onto my iPod and we played "Name That TV Show". The next day, we read trivia questions from a board game, using the Eggspert to buzz in.The only negative I can think of is that the documentation is a little weak. It doesn't really tell you how to switch from "Jeopardy" mode to "Wheel of Fortune" mode. I had to play with the buttons on the top of the unit to figure that out. 5
