Customer Reviews

Well worth the price tag. Best cube on the MarketI am cheap so when I saw the $100+ price tag I thought nope, that's wayy too much for a baby's toy. I went ahead and got it anyway though lol.And I'm glad I did. This thing is beautiful in person! Once unboxed it has such a wow factor!! Each side has activities. And the side that made me buy, was the side with the spinner. I knew my picky kid would love that. And I saw no other cubes with that feature. It also has a side where the child can take this hammer like tool and wack balls down!Perfect for my kid that loves to wack things, drop things and see things roll!I love, love love this cube! The quality is undeniable. My child is so picky with his toys, with such a short attention span, most of the other toys I bought either never got played with by him or he played once and never had interest again. It has been a while now and every day he is still coming out to play with yhis thing. We worth the money!!!It even has a shape sorter in it. Very pleased mama bear. 5Excellent Play Cube...Got it yesterday and my kids 7, 5, 3 and 1 all love it. They have kept playing with it since yesterday and have not gotten bored. They are sad when I have them put it away when baby is napping since it is a bit loud. I'm sure the newness will wear off, but this has been the most loved new toy yet. It is very good quality. The activities on it were well thought out and work well for a variety of younger aged kids. The main age range would probably be 1-5 years, but like I said, my 7 year old is also enjoying it.This one seemed safer than some of the other options since it has rounded edges and corners and is pretty heavy to keep it stable if a baby uses it to support their weight. My 1 year old has stood up while holding onto it and looked stable. She has not pulled up on it yet, so not sure how that will go, but I think it's a better purchase than the electronic activity tables I was also considering and has a much longer usefulness. I put the hammer away as suggested by another reviewer. Kind of like my wooden color stacker toy. My kids took off the circles and started using it like a hammer to hit things and sometimes each other, so I had to take it away.Update: 9/9/2014My kids still really like this. Of course it lost it's new toy appeal, but it is getting regular use and the younger 2 seem especially happy with it, which is the target age range. My 14 month old pulls up on it and it has not tipped over from her weight. She's a big girl, so that's good. I lowered the star rating by 1 star because the paint is already chipping off the shapes from normal use. The rest of the toy seems solid, but the paint chipping off the shapes is not cool. Especially for a pretty spendy product. I have carpeted floors where they are playing with it, so it isn't from dropping on the floor either. I would still choose this particular one over others for overall value and safety, but I hope they find a better paint. I'll probably contact the manufacturer for new shapes, but those will probably end up getting chipped up in time too. At least they would serve as spares. 4Excellent quality, fun options for play!I debated heavily on this toy for our 19 month old daughter for Christmas, but am very pleased we got her this. My only regret is that we did not have this when our oldest child was younger as it is such high quality it is made to go through multiple kiddos!Cons and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, which may be super picky, is that the one side where shapes go in has a knob you pull on to release the shapes down. This knob & release mechanism is really kind of hard. My daughter loves to put the shapes in their matching holes but she cannot release the shapes on her own to repeat the process. We have to help her which actually that's not a problem, having to help her, but to get them out we have to stick our hand up and move the parts around. Using the pull knob as it's meant to be used just doesn't fully work. Really there is only one con, but since this is a pricey toy it is worth noting.Pros outweigh my one con however. The quality is top notch! This is a toy that will last & last. My 5 yr old even enjoys taking his turn on the various activities. My now 20 month old loves hammering the balls and really enjoys the shape side other than not being able to get them out. My inner child personally loves the bead tracks on top. The side where you move animals through a sort of maze type thing to matching colors is cool too. I think my daughter is starting to be more interested in this as she's starting to understand color sorting more.Overall I really like this. It's the kind of toy I imagine once my kids outgrow I will box up & keep for grandkids one day as it is really that well made, which you can't say about many toys these days. 4Fun but Quality IssuesGreat activity play cube (five stars of fun), but we encountered three quality issues with ours. Two minor issues and one major issue.Minor issue #1 - The wooden beads on the red wire would come in contact with the green top of the cube when going into the hole at the red wire's lowest point. I was able to carefully but forcibly bend it back to the center of the hole. Problem solved.Minor issue #2 - From day 1, the three balls that get hammered down have had issues. They don't always make it down the track on their own. Two of the balls have gotten stuck. The yellow ball gets stuck most frequently. Problem is either (a) the balls aren't uniform in diameter, and sometimes the diameter of the ball isn't wide enough to make it to the dropping point. Or (b) the tracks come out a bit too far for the balls. We can live with this one. If anything we'll just say there's one more way to interact with this feature.Major issue - When putting the shapes (square, triangle, heart...) into the holes, they fall straight to the bottom. The mechanism with the red knob does not work. On inspection, it appears the length of the rope connecting the red knob to the dowel on the inside the cube is too short. The dowel is supposed to hold the shapes from falling when in its rest position. But this arrangement (on ours) is the equivalent of always having the knob in the release position no matter what you do... By the way, I did install the thin wooden backing board correctly - feeding it through the slots before attaching the top of the cube. This one is frustrating because it will require more effort than a quick fix to get it to be functional. For the amount of money this activity cube costs, I would expect a bit better quality control. At least test each feature once to make sure that the product is fully functional! That would have eliminated my Minor issue #1 and my Major issue. 3Worth the moneyThere are many activity cubes out there on the market and it can be hard to figure out which one to get, especially with the different price points. Hape's Country Critters is worth the price (we paid $115). It is incredibly well build- no sharp edges or nail/screw heads sticking out. In fact, it has a board that keeps the shapes in shape sorter from going too far into the cube, and a bar that keeps the shapes inside until it is pulled. That's convenient for moving the cube about. It also has a handle that makes the cube easy to pick up. And the handle hold doubles as a neat bead maze feature. The beads, balls and other features are brightly and attractively painted. The paint is water-based and safe. It shows no signs of chipping or fading and we've had the cube for a few months now and, yes, my son has put all other things in his mouth (as a side note: none are small enough to be a choking hazard for my 10 month old). Also, the overall cube is fairly heavy- enough so that it won't tip over if a baby uses it to pull him or herself to standing. however, they could probably push it along on carpet, once standing. This could be fun for an impromptu walker-toy; however, it might be something to watch for, if you're child isn't expecting it to slide! We put ours up against a table to stop it sliding.Also- all the sides are engaging for babies, but will obviously grow with the child. Right now, the favorite side is definitely the ball maze. Still, he loves to push the shapes in, if I hold them to the right spot. As he grows, he'll be able to pair the shapes himself. Plus there's some great discussions about color sorting and discussing the shapes (how many sides does a triangle have etc.) for as he grows. He can also push the wheel on the third side around now. Honestly, if I had one complaint it would be that the wheel is a bit boring. Not much to do. But he enjoys it, so that's what counts. The final side (which is not shown for some reason in the promotional pictures), is an animal maze. There are different animal heads that are different colors and you can move them along different wooden tracks to match them to different colors. Right now, my son can move them about to practice fine and gross motor skills. As he grows, we can work on color matching. 5Best toy ever! I'm so glad my son got this activity cube had a gift from his grandma! Yes it is pricey and I would never buy it because it's out of my budget but I absolutely love love love it. Everything came in perfect condition. Easy to instale, my husband didn't even need to read the instructions. I love the fact that I can hide the shapes, ball and hammer inside the toy since I feel like my son is to young for it yet. Which means he will grow into the toy! It is so durable that I know it will last for baby #3. It is stable that my 8 month of that is 21lb can stand up using the toy and I am NOT worried about it tipping over on him. OVERALL GREAT TOY! I wish Hape made more effortable toys so I can buy some more but I understand that they are expensive because they are designed so safe, fun, educational and creatively beautiful! 5A Well-thought Out, Highly Interactive, and Educational CubeAfter searching for some time for an activity cube that offered more than just spinning letters and zigzagging chunks of wood, I came across this gem. While a bit pricier than other cubes of its kind, it offers much more interactive and educational fun than its competitors. The BALL SIDE enables children to see and enjoy the effects of gravity and sloping (though it would have been cool if Hape had made this with differing slope grades so children could see how the balls move faster on the steeper grades and slower on the more shallow ones, but that's not the case); the SHAPE SIDE helps reinforce shape recognition, colors, and more concepts of gravity as the shapes fall through the corresponding slots and are "held" inside the unit until the child pulls the little red "plug" and allows them to fall; the ANIMAL MAZE SIDE offers fine motor and color matching practice as well as problem solving and math concepts (Which color comes First? Next? Last?), and the BEEHIVE SIDE allows children to explore g-force type of activity as they spin the hive slowly or quickly to watch the little wooden bees either slowly ride along the outer edge of the hive or plink into one of the hive ledges as the hive spins faster (a younger baby/child may need adult help to spin it fast enough for the plinking effect). The BEAD MAZE on the top of the cube offers more fine motor activities as well as problem solving practice as they figure out how to move the beads through the wire to get to the end or other side.As other reviewers have noted, this cube is high quality and sturdy, and has nice soft edges to help ease the blow of any accidental falls into the corners of the cube. The reason I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because our cube arrived with an incorrectly attached piece of wood on the inside of the cube (the ANIMAL MAZE side) which, if left as it was, rendered 3 of the animals incapacitated as they were stuck on the straight edge of the maze and couldn't get over to the other side (nor could the rest of the animals get over to the straight edge side). Thankfully, we were able to fix the issue with minimal effort and it works just fine now, but quality control should have caught the issue before it went out the door.I would definitely recommend this great cube to anyone considering it, as it offers so many wonderful, interactive, and educational components for little ones (Ages 1 and up (even the adults in this household enjoy playing with this one!)). 4Hours of Fun for an Active 18-Month-Year-OldI saw this product in a small store where it was about $60 more than what Amazon is selling it for. I was looking for an activity cube for my baby because these help with fine motor and cognitive development. Previously, I had purchased a cube for my daughter and it was TINY. Not what I imagined when I bought her a Christmas present. I returned it to Amazon and purchased this block. Best decision ever. What was NOT the best decision ever is opening the Amazon package 10 minutes before her bed time. It was WWIII because she wanted to play more. I had not accounted for her high level of interest when she saw the block. The Amazon package came with the block in it's own box. When we pulled it out, there were instructions on how to set it up. My husband jumped the gun and looked for an Allen Wrench in the garage. You DON'T have to do that. There's one in the box. The set up is fairly easy. Basically because the top has a whole activity, the top is turned upside down into the cube for space reasons. You undo the brackets, flip it over and tighten everything back up. Maybe five minutes of work.My daughter is 18-months-old and has an attention span of an Ant. She blew me away because she plays with this activity cube for about 15 minutes at a time. That doesn't seem like much, but as an Early Childhood educator, I can tell you that this is a great product when a baby can devote this much attention to one item. The activity cube is great because there is essentially five activities in one here. The hammer can be used to press down on the balls, which helps babies develop their grip which will come in handy when they start to write. There are lots of little blocks and balls that babies have to use their "pinchers" (thumb and index finger) to pick up which is a great way to develop fine motor skills. Additionally, after hammering the balls, they go down into the container and then the baby has to figure out how to put them back on top to hammer again. This develops their cognitive and problem solving skills.Overall, this is an AMAZING product. I would 1000% recommend this to any parent looking to help their child succeed developmentally. 5Cut baby fingersthe sorting shapes and balls are small enough to be a choking hazard or on the kine. Baby adores this toy, and its well made. the piece with plastic over the maze bits cut my baby fingers and blood was all over that side, i used a knife and peeled the sharp plasic edges around the entire plastic part. 3A toy with longevity! We purchased this for our son when he was quite young at around 5 months. He couldn't do much with it at the time, but loved looking at it and watching me spin the hive or drop the balls through the maze. Slowly he started to be able to utilize different parts. First he was spinning the hive, then playing with the knob on the shape sorter. A little later he was moving the animals on the tracks. He is 11 months now and loves using this to pull up on and also using the hammer and playing with the balls. I really think the bead maze on the top was one of the things that encouraged him to start pulling to stand. He still has room to grow with using the shape sorter and the ball maze in a more traditional fashion, but already 6 months later and he is still enjoying it.The minimal assembly required was easy enough and fairly quick to accomplish. Also, no paint chipping or anything like that even though it sees extensive daily use and abuse, especially from the included hammer. Both my son and his play group friends enjoy this quite a lot. One mom has since purchased this because it has been such a hit.We could have waited until about 7-8 months realistically, but we still found ways to utilize it younger than that. I have put the small shapes away and won't bring those out until he hits 12 months because they are a bit small.I can see this being well loved for a long time, and longevity is key with baby/toddler toys. We spent the same amount on his jumper at 6 months and it has already been put away, while we have had this longer and he is using it tons still. I am very happy with this purchase. Hape toys seem to be winners in our home.UPDATE:My son is 17 months old now and STILL uses it every single day. Whenever we have other babies and toddlers over, they enjoy it too. We have now given him all the shapes for the sorter and he is able to put most of them through the correct hole. The plus sign shape and heart give him trouble still. I love that he is still using and learning from it. I don't see it being put away any time soon!UPDATE #2:My son is now 28 months old and again, STILL plays with this daily. Of all the toys that have been purchased for him, this one has had the most "legs" in that he has spent the most time playing with it over the longest period of time. It still looks just like the day it arrived too! Even though he is able to do all of these activities, he is still engaged by the variety of challenges/activities. 5
