Customer Reviews

Absolutely perfect -the only grid mat you ll ever need.Yes! We were looking for a giant grid to play on that was made of vinyl, since our last mat for D&D was a laminated paper and the edges wouldn t stay down (which would occasionally fling our miniatures off the mat if someone accidentally bumped a dice box or book off the edge). This is SO much better. It lays perfectly flat and doesn t have any ripples or imperfections. It s literally perfect. I purchased Vis-A-Vis wet erase markers to use on it, and we haven t had any staining in the slightest.Additionally, it is huge! It s great for our table with six of us sitting around... lots of room for drawing out the battlefield.I will note that the hexagonal side is a slightly different texture than the square grid side (which is smooth), but that is probably so that the main side doesn t slide around on the table. However, I had no trouble erasing my wet erase markers when I first tested both sides. I definitely think that dry erase markers would leave flakes or stains in the lightly-textured hexagonal side, so I would not recommend using dry erase. 5Great size, but shipping method ruined product.I bought the large 34x48 inch mat. The product was shipped folded up. I've had it on a table with heavy books spread out all over the mat since arrival to try and get rid of the creases by they just wont' go away. This makes it almost useless for gaming. I have the smaller mat and that was shipped rolled rather than folded so I didn't have the same problem. Very disappointed. The instructions even say "Do not fold" yet they ship it to you folded?? 2Someone/something in the process flattened this! This is a nice"battle map". I've used this one by chessex before. It shipped on time, came in a decent sized shipping container. What I'm not sure, is why it was wrinkled like this. The directions specifically say to not flatten it but this is exactly what either Amazon, chessex, or some middle man did.Kinda crappy that the order filter at Amazon thought it was okay to send one that was obviously stored in a flattened state for a long time.I've had this rolled out with a table lead on it over night.I'll try this for a day or two. If that doesn't work I'll probably have to send it back.Product is great. How they store it:. Not great. 3Once prepped, it is perfect! As many others have mentioned, this product deserves 5 stars, but due to the shipping and packaging it will arrive in a box, sheathed in plastic and flattened. This results in numerous heavy creases that first need to be addressed before using the mat. I feel that if the mat was wrapped around a cardboard tube, like wrapping paper, it would avoid this creasing effect. The mat itself is thick and appears to be very durable. The grid is in a black ink and is mildly raised on the surface. This raising is so slight it does not impact gameplay, being only noticeable when you glide your hand across its surface. The mat comes with a set of instructions on how to care for the mat which is very handy. This product is not usable upon arrival. Be sure to set aside at least 12-24 hours to prep the mat before actual gameplay. To remove the creasing, I placed the mat between my mattress and box springs for a night. This was helpful, but still not perfect. I then rolled it out on the dining table and placed about 9 heavy encyclopedias on it. I then came in with a hairdryer on "high" and warmed up the mat. This caused the folds to smooth away after a few minutes (I had the hairdryer about 1-2 inches above the mat for about 20-30 seconds and then moved on to the next section. As the creases smoothed out, I pulled the mat tight, using the many books to keep it in this position. I left the books in place over night. By morning, it was as smooth as glass. Wonderful!Regarding the type of pens. From other reviews, the handy instructions the product ships with, and a friend who owns a similar mat, I was well versed that dry-erase was a big "NO". I have tried water-based ink (the local office supply was out of wet erase markers at first), and had to return the pens. Water-based pens will bead on this mat and are totally useless. I was finally able to find some true wet-erase pens (Expo Vis-a-Vis - the same kind teachers once used in the days of overhead projectors) and they were perfect. To test the ink, I drew out a large and elaborate map on the mat, using red, blue, green and black inks. I allowed them to dry for 6 hours, assuming this would be an adequate test of how long the inks may actually stay on the mat during a regular game session. After this, a few spritzes of water and a couple paper towels had the mat looking like new. No tracing or staining. The instructions mention that orange, red and purple inks have a greater tendency to stain the mat, and should not be allowed to stay on for too long. I know that red is not a problem after 6 hours.Once you prep the mat, it is a valuable and handy addition to your gaming gear. I carry mine in the box it was shipped in and don't know how we ever played without a mat like this. I would highly recommend it. 4Excellent product (Chessex double-sided megamat with 1" squares and hexes)As everyone else here has said, this Chessex megamat is excellent. It's much better than tiles, which are (a) expensive, (b) unique (your players will start joking about having been in this forest before), and (c) unstable at the table. This mat has enough friction on both sides that it basically sticks to a smooth, flat surface, so you'll never jostle it out of position. (No guarantees for jostling the minis on top of the mat, of course.) And it's just the right size to fit on a dining table for 6+ people.A few tips on how to get the most out of this mat:(1) Clean it thoroughly between sessions. I usually give it a once over at the end of each gaming session, but then I take it home and clean it again (wet paper towels are sufficient). You'd be surprised how much ink can stay in the mat's fibers even though it's not visible.(2) If you must store it rolled up, roll it so that the side you use (squares or hexes) is on the outside. That way, when you unroll it at the table, the curl goes downward and into the table, rather than upward away from the table. This makes it easier to flatten.(3) These Expo wet-erase markers (Expo Vis-A-Vis Wet Erase Markers, 8 Colored Markers (16078)) work great on the mat, and you get twice as many colors for less than an additional $2 compared to the Chessex brand proprietary markers (Chessex Role Playing Play Mat Marking Pen: (4 Pack) Staedtler Lumocolor Water Based Overhead Projection Markers). (I remember reading some reviews of the Chessex markers saying that their red marker left permanent marks in the mat. I can't confirm that personally, but I can confirm personally that none of the Expo markers have left permanent marks. Of course, I always wash the mats off immediately after our gaming sessions, but our sessions can go 5 hours...)(4) If, as in my case, your mat does not live in the same place where your gaming sessions occur, I strongly recommend picking up a carrying tube. I just picked up an Alvin Ice Tube 37" (for example, Alvin Ice Tube 37 Inch Blue) for this purpose, and it's great. Besides allowing me to throw away the flimsy and battered thin plastic sleeve in which the mat was originally mailed to me, the tube is also fairly wide in diameter (2.75 inches interior), which means the mat doesn't have to stay so tightly coiled up in storage.Game on! 5Best Grid For RPG's That Utilize Miniature PlayI have now used this mat for a few sessions now and really like the ease of use when compared with dungeon tiles. I am no artist but drawing out a dungeon map free-hand using wet erase markers has been fast and easy enough for me. When the mat gets full, I simply wipe away the old drawing with a damp paper towel and follow with a dry one. Dungeon tiles seem to take more time to pull the correct pieces to fit together and you may not have tiles that fit the make-up of a particular dungeon or scene making them less versatile in exchange for printed detail and color. The large size of this mat means that I can draw out large scale battles or string together multiple rooms, corridors, caverns, etc. on one mat. The 1"x 1" grid size means that they work perfectly for 5E Dungeons and Dragons as well as other gaming systems that incorporate miniatures into their play.Though the mat is not indestructible, it is pretty sturdy. It can be gouged leaving a puncture hole or nick on the surface if you aren't careful. However it is impact resistant and will not easily tear without intention meaning it should last a long time with proper care. The mat will crease if you fold it so I try to roll it up when I transport it and lay it flat (under my bed) when not using it. Mine doesn't really get a folded "crease" in it so much as it gets "wave" in it but it flattens out pretty well as long as you are on a flat surface.I've researched other grid mats before buying this and do feel I made the right choice. You may find a better custom-made grid but, if you are an avid player of RPG Table Top games that utilize miniatures, I wouldn't use anything else in this price range. 5Is a cardboard tube that expensive? So that mat is nice, high quality. I only just got it so we'll see how well it works. My real complaint is in the shipping. Yes, this item is "rolled up," but its weight is so heavy it collapses on itself. This leads to a wonderful wavy effect when you try to lay it down. A day AND night sitting under books has not helped. I'm sure it will flatten given enough time (good thing I don't want to play right away), but you would think that, to save your customers grief, these would be shipped rolled up on a tube of cardboard... you know, like a poster. That way when it arrives you can simply lay it down flat. Something to consider.I altered my rating from 4 star to 3 after this thing has been sitting for nearly 24 hours with heavy books on it trying to flatten it. It has barely budged. Making your customers work just to get this thing to work before they can use it isn't a good business model. As I said before, a simply cardboard tube would prevent this.I was nervous to do it, but I eventually stuffed the thing in the dryer. This did the trick. For those buying the expo fine-point markers that are shown as often being sold with this mat, they're terrible. Don't waste your time. I ordered the Staedtler Universal pen Lumocolor 4 pack and I will see if those are better. They can't possibly be worse. 3Amazing for tabletop games. This is such a great battle mat. There is just nothing like it. I own both sizes. I just recently purchased the larger size but have owned the smaller one for years. My DM also used one that is really old. The edges are fraying a bit, but other than that it is 100% usable. As long as you are careful not to leave anything on there too long it does not stain easy. I have even accidentally used sharpie on it and was able to remove it with a good bit of work. From what I've been told wet-erase works better for not staining. I've always used wet-erase and never had a problem.I attached a photo for a comparison between the two. I included a spray bottle and marker for scale. I would recommend the bigger one if you have the space but if you don't the smaller one is still very useful. The bigger one is 34 1/2in x 48inThe smaller one is 26 in x 23 1/2 in 5Giant hassle of a product. I regret spending money on this. The review starts off with five stars. Minus one star for every major problem with the product or with the seller.1) Can't write on the map with dry erase markers. It immediately stains and will not wash out. You need water based markers, like ye olde teacher would use to scribble on the acetate overheads. Yuck.1a) Side opposite-of-a-benefit, you apparently can't leave writing on the mat overnight, or more than a day or three, or THAT will stain it, too. Double yuck.2) Point #1 was not clearly indicated by the seller. You NEED water-based makers. What a pain.3) The map is easily deformed, and not easy un-deformed. If you fold it, you're looking at folds on this janky piece of vinyl FOR-EV-ER. They say that pressing with heavy objects will remove the folds. They also say that heat will remove the folds and deformities. Lies. I left encyclopedia books double-stacked over the map for a week. No effect. I tried to remove just one fold from the map with a hair dryer, hoping that I could massage out the fold if I devoted about 5 minutes to this one f-up. Double no dice. The literature says you can soak the map in your tub in warm water, then massage it out. Sounds like a ton of work. Oy vey.4) The seller shipped the map FOLDED. See 3) above for why this is an issue. So, tl;dr. Too much hassle to get this thing to work. Can't fold it, must use water-based pens. One star rating. Avoid this product, especially from this seller. 1Good mat. WILL ARRIVE WRINKLED.The mat is great, don't see any of the streaks some people complained about, but as many others have noted the mat will arrive rolled and probably flattened a bit. This will cause some wavyness but I was able to remove about 90% of the waves by stretching the mat out and leaving it under books with a few lbs of weight on top of each for a few hours. After that I stretched it out and heated it for about an hour with a hair dryer, stretching it out as it warmed up. All in all if you're willing to put some elbow grease into it you will end up with a completely usable mat within 5 or so hours. The quality of the mat itself is great just like I expected. This is the sort of thing that I fully expect to last the average GM many many years unless it is destroyed by a pet or something of that manner. Stay away from dry erase and wipe it down after your session ends to avoid staining, although my research suggests that virtually any stains can be removed with hard scrubbing so long as you take care not to scrub the grid away.Out of curiosity I made three sets of inch long marks with every color of the Vis-a-vis wet erase combo pack and left them on the mat for different legnths of time before wiping them away to see what if anything would stain. After 24 hours all marks (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black) wiped away easily leaving no stains. After 3 days all marks other than purple wiped away easily. After about 10 seconds of scrubbing with water and a paper towel i was able to remove the mark. After 7 days purple and blue left marks, but were still easy to remove within a minute using only water.EDIT: Review dropped form 5 to 4 stars. This is due to there being two very small (maybe 1cmx2cm) areas that i have found on the mat that stain immediately and permanently upon use. This may be due to the process by which the mat is created such as these small spots not receiving a chemical wash that they were supposed to, or perhaps they were scratched in the factory or while being packaged. These spots are easy to work around once you know they exist but there is no way to locate them other than drawing over them and wondering why that one spot won't erase. This is absolutely still the mat I recommend that you purchase since it still blows all the competition away. 4
