Customer Reviews

High Quality Supplement for Tabletop RPGsThis battlemat is a must have supplement for DMs/GMs that appreciate aesthetics. The aged parchment background lends a time period atmosphere to environments, immersing players in a more authentic role-playing experience. As other reviewers have mentioned, the mat did come severely creased, but a night beneath a few hardcovered atlases fixed it perfectly. The mat wipes clean after each use, in my experience, up to a week after being drawn on. I store it in a thick, cardboard tube, along with other vinyl battlemats of various shapes and sizes.I highly recommend this mat, both for the discerning and pragmatic DM/GM; while visually pleasing, it also serves a very practical purpose. 5This is a terrific aid for anybody who plays role-playing games. This is the rare item that's so good, I don't know how I ever lived without it. I've been playing D&D since the 80s and I really wish I'd had something like this back then. Not just for mapping but for the extra level of tactical play that this provides.I will say that the small mat is much more useful to me than the large one. Number one, it's just a more convenient size for transport, but it also fits on nearly any table, while the large one struggles to fit on a lot of tables. But even if you have the big battlemat, this smaller one is sometimes good for temporary or auxiliary maps of for one-off battles. For what it's worth, I use wet erase markers and wipe it clean after every session. I have found that it cleans up nicely. however I've heard from other people that the mat can get stained if you leave it on that long. I also roll mine up and keep it stored that way. 5A Must for RPG GamersThis is my second Chessex mat. My old one was hex-only and about twice the size of this one, and served me well for nearly twenty years. The larger mat proved quite useful on an unexpectedly cold day, making a serviceable blanket.Anyway, the new mat has much to recommend it: it is dual sided, with hexes and grids so it can be used for almost any game system. The material wipes off easily, provided you use the right pens, stands up to spills, resists stains, and is damn near invulnerable. The smaller size is perfect for my smaller surroundings, fitting my dining table perfectly.Just remember to USE THE RIGHT PENS!!!Years ago, I ran a Cyberpunk2020 combat which took place in a ,multi-level mall. The map was complex and intricate and I had drawn it out days before the game -- with permanent marker. Afterwards, soap and water got most of it our, but the faint ghost of a dark future shopping mall remained for years. After that, nearly evey RPG campaign I ran eventually had one or more mall-based adventures. 5Great battlemat! This battlemat is awesome! I recently started up a new Pathfinder campaign, having not played tabletops for many years, and was looking around for the battlemat that my group used to use back in high school, then settled on this one.The mat is large, with plenty of space for play, and the square grid is perfectly sized for the standard D&D miniatures that my group is using. Though we can't plot out a whole dungeon on it, there is ample space for a few rooms or a large outdoor encounter. Wet-erase marker is easy to erase with a wet paper towel, and the mat dries quickly. The mat feels thick and substantial, and I can't imagine tearing or scarring it easily. It is also slightly padded, so it will protect a wooden table underneath from more violent dice rolls or miniature moves (yes, this has been a problem in the past). When transporting the mat, try to keep it rolled up and straight, if you kink the mat while it's rolled up, it will crease noticeably, and though these creases do come out with time, they can be annoying to deal with during a play session. Similarly, try not to fold the mat to store it, as the folds persist for a few hours. When unrolling the mat, the edges do curl a bit, but that curl goes away after pinning it down for a few minutes. For marking on the surface, I also purchased Expo Vis-A-Vis Wet-Erase Overhead Transparency Markers, Fine Point, 8-Pack Pouch, Assorted Colors which work well - note that the red color is a bit harder to erase than the others, so don't leave it on for weeks or it will be tough to remove. MAKE SURE you use wet erase and NOT dry-erase on this mat to avoid staining your mat permanently.Overall this was a great purchase and I imagine it will last decades. Every group should have one of these battlemats! 5UsefulI like this mat a lot. The material is strong and heavy duty. It will stand up to a lot of abuse. The light brownish color is nice and versatile - also conducive to the mood for D&D etc. It's great having squares and hexes to work with.It takes a long time to smooth out as other have mentioned. Mine arrived rolled up nicely and was not squashed or mishandled, but it does have that wavy pattern when unrolled. I put it on a table under some heavy books and weights for a few days. It's much better but still not 100% smooth. On the plus side, when I roll it up to store and unroll it again, it returns to the most recent level of smoothness without getting any worse again.Overall it's an awesome high quality mat. If you're reading reviews about it, then you shouldn't waste any more time and just buy it. You'll have no regrets. I would recommend getting the bigger size though. It's so useful that you will quickly find ways to utilize all of the space available and wish there was more. 5Don't even hesitate, purchase this now!LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! My husband and I and our group of friends have been playing DnD for about 8+ years, and I can't believe we didn't buy this sooner. It totally elevates gameplay. It is SO NICE to be able to visualize the area when playing, and before, we would often use sheets of paper and draw out encounters, but it was hard to add and update this drawing as players moved through the space, and it was really rough estimates for distances, etc. This takes all that away! I can add paths when we're running through a dungeon with ease, and instead of having players ask, "how far away are the skeletons," or "how wide is the room," they are able to figure this out themselves and it promotes players to build skills and better strategies.I have even begun using terrain tiles, and I can lay them down right on top of this mat, and then draw around the tiles to create a more immersive experience for everyone. When we're done, all I have to do is spray some water and wipe with a cloth, and it's ready for the next battle! I highly recommend buying a mat, and this is a great size, great material, and is an essential part of our game nights.****Be aware that you need to use WET-ERASE OVERHEAD MARKERS, not EXPO markers!!**** 5Chessex Role Playing Double-Sided Reversible BattlematBought the smaller size battle mat which is perfect for table top gaming. Even though the Chessex battle mat comes with it's own pen I also bought the EXPO Low Odor Dry Erase Markers in various colors to use on it. However, neither the Expo markers or the Chessex pen would wipe off the mat. We tried rubbing with a soft dry cloth, we tried rubbing with a soft damp cloth but nothing would shift the marks. The printed grid lines come off really easily though so be warned! Eventually the only thing that wiped the pen marks off the mat was a little denatured alcohol. It seems that this mat is a not much use if you can't draw and wipe off easily. Oh well - back to pencil and paper I guess. 3Y'know why this product only has 20 or so reviews? This is the mat that you buy and then take with you to any RPG session you attend, unless someone there already owns one. You draw on it, set tiles on it, play with miniatures or tokens, roll it up and put it away. You practically forget it's an essential part of your DM stuff collection, until the day you've left it at home by mistake. Over a decade later, you realize it has survived more abuse and wear than every piece of furniture in your house. It's easy to forget to write a glowing review of a product that isn't terribly flashy and stays with you forever and ever -- if I wasn't about to buy a second one of these to permanently install on a table, I wouldn't have thought to pop in here and 5-star it either.Granted, it's just a vinyl mat with squares and hex-marks. But this is exactly everything you could possibly want from a vinyl mat with squares and hex-marks. The alternatives for sale (notably including products by the sorta awful "Role 4 Initiative") are just overpriced big sheets of laminated paper, which sound nice at first (you can use Sharpies!) but tend to crinkle when rolled up (and will never ever lay flat again). Rather than buy a $20 gigantic laminate that Kinko's could probably create for a third the cost, buy this mat. And if you remember to, years and years later, come back and write a 5-star review about how durable and useful it was. :)(Oh, and in the event of stains, just google for how to clean vinyl. We've cleaned a wider variety of gunk off this mat than it would be possible to clean out of carpet. Soda, condiments, dust from bags of chips, blood from a nosebleed, permanent marker, glue, paint used to paint miniatures, paint used to paint walls, coffee, and a million things I'm forgetting. I've heard of people throwing their mats away over accidental Sharpie use -- don't! trust the google! it's recoverable!)Chessex also makes a larger version of this mat, in case you want to have longbow fights. I think a larger mat would just be more cumbersome. 5Exactly what I expectedI'm very happy with this mat. It functions exactly how I imagined. Here are the bullet points: - The tanish color/gradient of it makes it look old, questy, and map like, which provides a better aesthetic than a straight-up paper white color. - It erases very easily with a wet paper towel(I use vis-a-vis wet erase markers) - I've left drawings on the map for 3 weeks that have been wiped away, no problem. - I roll it up after every session, it stays rolled up for a week or two, and always lays out flat again (takes about 10 minutes to "settle")The only thing I'd say about this particular mat is I have had space issues with it for longer combat, but close range stuff works great. To that point, the product description DOES tell you exactly how big it is (and there are bigger versions of the same product), so this is something you should expect before you buy. Product is, and functions, exactly as described. 5Beware, don't use dry eraseThis mat worked very well for my games. Be aware that Dry Erase markers don't work well on this (you can use alcohol to clean, but that's a pain). Use the Wet Erase markers instead.Dry Erase markers are much more common and make less mess, so its disappointing that Dry Erase doesn't work on this particular board. But I will say that having hex on one side and squares on the other is really handy!Board rolls up when not in use. 5
