    Childlike scrawling, poor quality!This item is nothing like it's pictured. Letters and numbers scrawled, messy, childlike, and nearly illegible, all around the perimeter. No shine or varnish to the pieces, so they look very plain and unfinished. Barely, barely enough room for the pieces, making it difficult to put away, very small board, rickety hinge and clasp to close, and the pointy clasp cannot fold flat when the board is laid out, so it juts out while you're playing? Bought as a Christmas gift, but so glad I opened and inspected it first. I would be so embarrassed to give this to anyone. This is incredibly disappointing, especially given the price. Would not recommend under any circumstance. 1Perfectly portable...quick set up...nice storage!This chess set is wonderful for chess players who need a portable set or just do not have the space to leave one set up.POINTS OF INTEREST:1. Wooden case that folds up to hold all pieces inside a green felt lined case/ board combo.2. Chess pieces I believe are made from the walnut tree for dark and Ash tree for light.3. Board/case is all one solid wood top. Stained for dark and light squares. The stain is NOT water sealed. Do not get water on it. Stain rubs off and will get on you or what it is on. May want to polyurethane it to seal...4. Chess pieces are carved by machine and possibly some hand carving on top of piece. Some small parts are glued on, but it seems sturdy. They have a pleasing shape. I would prefer that the castle to look more like the one my Dad taught me.5. Piece weight is good. They are lite, but are weight/size appropriate and do not tip over. Green felt on bottom of pieces.6. Hindges on folding case/board are suitable for weight and well placed. They, as well as, the latch all lined up well for correct smooth opening/closing.*Great price! good value! Nice craftsmanship!Refreshing to see a manufacture that is NOT haphazardly tossed together!* 5It is a beautiful set but mine came missing a white queenIt is a beautiful set but mine came missing a white queen. Real pain trying to get that fixed, so I originally gave it only one star. After having to pay for a second set since a simple replacement could not be send, the second set came in fine, so I am improving my rating to 3, since I find it beautiful. The seller was not able to help me with the missing piece and suggested contacting the European manufacturer, which is not noted anywhere on the box?! So I can not give more than 3 for the hustle of all that. 3The pieces are interesting and cool. Had to improvise and make knights for the time being although it was a surprise girt for my girlfriend and she was upset as well. 1Good chess set for the price.Good chess set. The pieces are unique and the board has a storage area on the bottom for all the pieces, however the craftmanship of the board is not great. With the board "open" and ready to play the center seam is uneven to the point of having to pick the pieces up to move them rather than "sliding" the pieces across the surface.For the price it's a really nice set, a little more attention to the fit and finish of the actual board surface and this gets 5 stars. 4Great Little SetThis is our first chess set. I just became interested in chess and my husband is teaching me. We wanted an inexpensive but pretty set for our home, and we wanted a portable set. This one fits the bill perfectly. It's so interesting and pleasing to look at. There are minor issues with glue being visible on the underside of the cross on the king's crown and on a couple of other pieces if you are really looking closely. But overall the set is gorgeous and unique. Being all wood gives it a very nice feel. The copy on the box says that the wood is sourced ecologically and that there is no child labor involved in producing the game. They mention that they have a long history of making quality, affordable games and toys, but I don't recognize the brand, presumably because it's a European one. I assume everything is made according to European standards, which is fine with me. I think those are in some cases more stringent than ours. The set is the perfect size to toss into a suitcase for a cabin weekend as well. We just received this a few days ago, so I was sorry to see it is no longer available as of today. I hope they restock soon, as I give it a strong recommendation. 5WowI loved it and so did my fianc ! Chess is literally a part of his life so for him to love it means it was definitely worth the purchase. I didn't read much into the description before purchasing it, I read more into the reviews to help me make my decision. I'm not sure if it describes how it's made because it looks hand crafted just by the look of the little flaws as if it were hand made... So to whomever created the set you did very well and it is well worth the purchase. Mind you I am a very picky customer when I shop online. I become suspicious when I come across product whose price is too good to be true. The chess board and it's pieces really outdid themselves. It's unique and simple. 5Not quite as nice as the pictureI could say this is "as expected"- for the price, I wasn't expecting it to be the best thing ever. There are very obvious flaws. The letters aren't quite right- the D's, for instance, are more squares. The varnish is smeared in several places. The circles along the edge are fairly off center. It's very folksy. On the kings and queens you can see globs of glue where they joined together the contrasting wood (and globs falling off the sides). The bishops and rooks look very similar, and like pawns. Most of the pieces have obvious blemishes. The box/board does seem very sturdy, though, and closes up nicely. It looks handmade, and handmade in a rush.Having said all that, I bought this for a 9 year old. He loves it. LOVES it. Thinks it's the fanciest chess set ever. It's all "grown up". We played several games, he didn't find the board too small. If I had extra money, I might have gotten the larger version- but honestly, this one works. The set he had before this was the No Stress Chess set, which is great for learning.Anyway, I probably wouldn't buy this for an adult- I might be a little embarrassed to give it. But for a kid it's fine. I'd just splurge a bit more for one of the nicer sets if I wanted to impress. 4A good set for casual playMy son's 8 and the pieces are a perfect size for him. I would not have bought it at first glance because the pieces aren't weighted. I changed my mind once I got to hold the pieces at a chess club meet. They won't last in an earthquake, but the pieces are stable and feel good in the hand.We had trouble with a weighted plastic set breaking on the floor. Toddlers and tile didn't mix with that set. These pieces have already weathered several falls. The board is small and makes for a tight fit at times, which would be frustrating for an adult for regular play. The larger board would be good in that case. This one gives him no trouble.There was mention in the reviews about the clarity of the notation, and that is true. They are written with a wood-burner without a stencil. The results are inconsistent. One "F" on my board looks like a sideways U. It's not something that hinders play or study with us though. Notation is easily memorized and we use our chess table.This is a good set for casual play. 4
