Customer Reviews

Catch the bugs you fear!We do not live in an area that gets a lot of icky or scary bugs (Like Texas!). But I do have a house full of arachnophobics. The sight of a spider brings them to tears. Before they head out into this spider infested world as adults, the spider-scared need to learn to catch and release spiders on their own. The Carson Bug Vew catching tool allows this. You can catch spiders, bugs, and threatening looking dust bunnies safely and easily. This catcher only works for creatures on the floor or wall but won't work in corners or on shag carpet. Great for kids bug hunting in the yard too! 5No more screaming like a little girl when I see a spider. My umm... kids, yeah kids, are afraid of spiders and living in the south, we've got some big ones. This is the easiest way to pick up these creepy crawly things without getting your hands dirty. Makes a great device for humane removal of all sorts of nasty creatures, or for watching them fall to a watery death in the toilet bowl of doom.No matter your reason for getting it, this thing is fantastic. Well made, easy to use, and durable. The "kids" no longer scream like girls when they have to get a spider out of the house. 5Mama loves bugs.I bought one of these for my kids a while back and they used it so much they eventually destroyed it BUT the concept is so wonderful that I bought another for myself. I love snagging bugs and spiders and checking them out with my kids before we toss them outside. The yellow trapping plastic can get warped and off its track if you don't take good care of it. My kids left it out in the yard, dug in the dirt with it, probably hit each other with it, and so forth...and it lasted quite a long time. 5I'm so proud of myself, I handle bugs like a pro...almost.So far, it works! I love it! No more staring at the bug for fear of loosing sight of where it goes, and yelling, well more like shrieking, for someone to get a man shoe, or the spray, to deal with the intruder. Now I bravely keep an eye on the bug, grab the bug scooper, and scoop it up. Then, with my arm fully extended in front of me, holding the caught bug in the bug scooper as far from my body as possible, I walk calmly and proudly to my husband at his computer and show him the bug I caught. The magnifer is great for that. My husband takes over from there. I don't want to go outside and set it loose, I mean, well, you know. I truly want no chance of it running my way once it is released. Of course I direct my husband where to release it outside. I want him to go to the road side, walk around the corner, better yet cross the street...in my dreams. The man simply doesn't hear me. But I can't complain. Even he finds it a cinch to release. He may have to give it a hard shake to get the bug out. Better him than me. Note to self: Never look at the bug through the magnifier! At least while carrying it. When he's got hold of the bug scooper it I may take a peek...or bravely pretend to. Trust me, just don't look! 5LOVE THIS! Great for citizen science and saving house bugsI got this catcher because we try to be as kill-free in our home as possible, but sometimes the traditional cup-and-paper method just doesn t work. This tool catches bugs so easily, we ve even nabbed house flies with it! The opening was wider that expected, so I think most household critters (e.g., daddy long-legs, centipedes, mosquitos, etc.) could be caught in it without damage. The other great thing about it is that I m able to use it to get close-ups of tiny creatures for my citizen science projects on iNaturalist, which allows me to get an ID on particular spiders and other things that would be too difficult to photograph enough detail on without magnification. The ONLY thing I would maybe change about it would be making the yellow floor of the catcher (the part that slides in and out) clear so the bottom of the bug could be observed easier; however, having it colored probably does make it easier to see when the thing has been successfully enclosed inside, and having a clear bottom might interfere with the magnification, so I m not taking off any stars for this. 5As an exploratory kid's toy, probably great. As a humane bug catcher, almost worthless.Living in a New York City apartment, once in a while, no matter how vigilant you are about traps and such, you're going to get invaded by bugs once in a while. Like many reviewers of this product, I was looking for a more effective way than the old "paper and cup" method to catch and humanely release insects. When a potentially book-infesting insect appeared, perched along a ceiling beam, threatening to burrow into my personal library, I figured it was time to get some kind of tool. After researching various bug vacuuming implements that got poor reviews, and then being appalled by some kind of heavy-duty, uzi-like bug assault weapon that also appeared in my search results (and, apparently, is a real thing), I then found this promising capture-and-release tool. I was heartened by all the positive reviews but, as much as I love the concept, it's just not very effective.First, I agree with other reviewers who pointed out that the magnifier is worthless. The insect must be directly in the center in order to appear magnified and it's true that bugs instinctively cling to the sides of the clear box looking for escape, so they never really come into magnified view. You'd have a better chance at viewing a larger bug probably - that is, if you can catch it, especially without ripping its legs off.I also agree that the magnifier complicates trapping by obstructing your ability to see what you're trying to catch. So far, it's been almost useless for catching any of the insects that have invaded my home. The plastic "capture" box is just awkward and doesn't seem to lie flat on any surface. This makes it especially difficult to capture smaller or very slim-bodied insects. They can easily slip between the bottom edges of the capture box and the surface you're covering and escape. If the edges of the box were lined with something softer that created some kind of seal, like rubber or silicone, it would probably work better.I also think hard plastic is not the ideal material if you're trying to capture insects indoors. The edges are hard and sharp enough that it could easily dent or scratch surfaces like wooden cabinets if you're moving too quickly or with too much force. Again, lining the edges of the capture box with rubber or silicone would solve that issue.Lastly, the thin sheet of plastic that slides to seal the insect in has an unfortunate guillotine effect in that, as you slide it closed, the bug tries to scurry out and you end up crushing some part of its body, usually the legs. Completely defeats the purpose of using a "humane" device! As far as captures go, it totally failed to capture a silverfish (too skinny, too fast). It captured a firebrat (barely) but cut its legs off. I managed, after much chasing and laborious swooping, to capture two (out of maybe seven) fruit flies in my kitchen, which were successfully released outside. I don't have high hopes for catching roaches should they dare to enter (they'll have to be squished as usual), nor do I have any hope of capturing moths or houseflies or many other flying, fast-moving insects with this thing.Overall, a nice idea but pretty flawed execution. Probably much more valuable as a children's toy for outdoor exploring; not so good as a humane pest control device. I returned it for a refund. 2Superb bug relocation tool. Get them out of your house securely, safely and humanly. No mess and no guilty feelingsOh my God, where do I begin how much I love this bug catcher.Yes well I know it appears to be like a toy, However I assure you it is very well-made and has become life saver in our household. We are always visited by little crawly visitors from the outdoors, whom do not wish to squish but still need to remove from the home. Before I found this Carson bug catcher, I was using the old "cup and piece of mail" technique, which was hit and miss at best. No more! I just slide open up the bottom of the catcher, get the intended target in my sites, then pop the catcher down over top, slide the bottom closed with my thumb, and viola! Bug is safely secured. After that I just merely escort my unwelcome guest to the outdoors where they may frolic elsewhere and not in my home. It's actually REALLY satisfying. I also feel very confident now that when I see a bug, I know I'm gonna git that sucker with my truster Carson Bug Catcher. Thank you Carson! Thank you, thank you for giving me an reliable alternative to squishing bugs, and helping to liberate them from my home :D [bugs relocated to date: crickets, spiders, outdoor cockroaches - the BIG ones, moths, flies, beetles] 5Very Small Bugs Can Escape or Enter Hollow HandleWorks as designed with faults. A huge flaw is the magnifier. It's worthless. The bug needs to be directly in the center, and none stay there. They all hug the side looking for an escape, and can't be seen. I didn't buy it to view bugs though. I bought it to catch bugs in the house and release them outside. The magnifier makes this harder than using a cup and piece of cardboard. Because of the magnifier you can almost never see if you're covering small bugs. When attempting to catch them, this makes it difficult when you can't see where the bug is, underneath the plastic, or if you have it covered at all. Another problem is the fact there are tiny spaces which allows very small, or very flat bugs to escape, or squeeze into the hollow handle. I've already had to take the handle apart to get one out. This is decent enough if you're going to catch and release quickly, and you're aware to keep small bugs away from the spaces. This is not something you should use to view bugs and I wish they would remove the useless magnifier from future builds. 3GET ONE FOR EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!! BEST INVENTION EVER. [Update: Caught 17 scorpions so far] Y'ALL. THIS IS THE BEST INVENTION EVER!!!!! This isn't a toy! This is a tool. A WEAPON. They need to rebrand it--make it black and red and give it a new and worthy name. Every parent should give their kid this when they head off to college. There should be one in every room of every house. It should come with a carrying case or holster. Why am I so excited about the BugView??? Gone are the days of trying to trap a scorpion underneath a glass and attempting to move it with a piece of paper! Gone are the days of giving up on that, and leaving said scorpion underneath a glass for an undisclosed amount of time waiting for someone else to make it disappear! (I hate squishing bugs, because ew. If they escape I just accept that my home belongs to them now.) Since I received this a few weeks ago, I've caught 5 scorpions, spiders, beetles, and a roachish thing. I've ordered another Bugview as well. (Makes a great gift!!!!)Instructions: Slap a sticker over the magnifying glass. Scorpion at 5x its normal size? HAHA no thanks! (I have no problems catching things with the obstructed view.) Now, catch insects and release them hundreds of feet away from where you sleep at night! Rescue flipped beetles without touching them! The world is your oyster! YOU ARE UNSTOPPABLE.With my BugView , I have reclaimed my independence! I am safe in my own home! I can go outside again! I GOT MY LIFE BACK. THANKS, BUGVIEW!!!Update 9/22/17: So far I have caught **17** scorpions with this. Added a new photo featuring numbers 14, 15, and 16. This scorp squad was captured within 24 hrs of each other: 14 by a door to the outside, 15 in my shower, and 16 at the top of the stairs.17 (not pictured) was posted up outside my bedroom door. This is why you should ideally have a BugView in every room.GOOD LUCK OUT THERE!! 5Great Way to Catch and Release Spiders and Bugs Around the HouseThis works exactly as hoped. It makes it easy to grab spiders without fear of crushing them (which is something that I always worry about with the cup and paper method because of my shaky hands). It is also great for nabbing them when they're awkwardly high. Because of the solid grip it also makes it easy to fling them out into the protected area under the deck where they'll be safer and happier and not likely to get smashed by someone else in the house. I've also used it effectively to grab a few other larger bugs.I definitely enjoy the magnifying glass on the top because it lets me take a good look at the friends that I am removing from the house while not worrying about dropping them and having to retrieve them again. I've definitely recommended this product to others. 5
