Customer Reviews

Difficult and Prone to Making Grown Men CryThis one is driving my husband insane....and I love it!Very well made, EXTREMELY difficult. He has it on his office desk and fiddles with it every day. It has now been 3 months since he received it and he's only just managed to take it apart. I told him that supposedly that was the easy part. He may have started crying. I can't confirm or deny that.Purchase this for the man you love. 5My favorite metal puzzle!I have about 15 Hanayama cast metal puzzles, mostly level 5 and 6, this is by far my favorite puzzle. It feels amazing in the hand, fun to play with, has a really nice solid feel. And once you figure it out you'll love it even more! No cheating - looking at youtube solutions takes all the fun out of it! 5Beautiful, elegant, infuriating...This is one of the most aesthetically pleasing puzzles imaginable. The way the pieces interlock with one another in the starting state is a thing of beauty, and it's almost a challenge just to bring oneself to start it.There's something like a dozen steps to solving this puzzle, and after trying (and failing) for months, I finally gave in and watched the solution video on YouTube to get some hints. But don't be fooled - simply watching the video is STILL not enough to actually solve it. Even if you went through one step at a time in slow motion, this is a fiendish puzzle. And putting it back together is even harder. The replay value on this is huge. It still takes me ten minutes to take it apart and another 20 to put it back together, even though I know most of the steps pretty well by now. This is definitely a hard puzzle and level 5 doesn't do it justice - I have the Elk (level 6) puzzle and this one is a million times harder. 5My Mission is Accomplished! My husband is someone who loves brain teasers, buys the hardest puzzles, and typically solves them within 10 minutes. While I love that he's such a left-brained thinker, it frustrates me to no end when I buy him a puzzle and he solves it immediately because then I wonder if it's really worth spending the money on puzzles for him. Well, this past Christmas, I decided to search on here for some of the hardest puzzles I could find (that he didn't already have, of course) and see if I could stump him, which is one of my goals in life. He already owned some of the Hanayama puzzles and, after searching through them and researching extensively on here, I decided to purchase the Vortex puzzle for him.The Hanayama puzzles are made of cast metal in China and are rated based on their difficulty. The level six puzzles are considered extremely difficult. This particular puzzle is a level five, which wasn't on my radar since I was mainly searching for level six puzzles but many reviewers said this one was very difficult. All of these puzzles come in a nice green box, which makes it easy to give them as gifts. I put these in my husband's stocking and they are a great size for it.Since receiving this puzzle, my husband has worked on it on and off, which means...he didn't solve it within 10 minutes and that makes this puzzle worth every penny!!!! He recently solved it after about an hour and 45 minutes of work and then he finally managed to put it back together. He said putting it back together was a lot harder than taking it apart. IF you find yourself in a bind and need a little assistance, there are videos online that you can use to help get you to that next step.My husband seriously loves these puzzles because he likes to figure out how things work and this one was a great purchase for part of his Christmas present! I, personally, have not tried this puzzle nor do I intend to, since my brain doesn't really work that way but I was delighted that this turned out to stump my husband. I was surprised that this one was a level five since those aren't as difficult as the level six puzzles, although they are obviously still difficult. If you, or someone you know, loves brain teasers and you need a VERY difficult puzzle, I highly recommend this one. Hanayama puzzles are well-made and small enough for you to stash in your desk drawer at work (Shhhh...don't tell your boss!), in your pocket, or to take on a trip. I'm already searching for my next purchase for my husband and, even though he won't admit it, he loves a good challenge... as do I! 5GREAT PRODUCT ! ! ! ! YOU WON'T STOP WITH JUST ONE ! ! ! !This is an extremely well made, beautifully done puzzle. Congratulations. Perfectly done from top to bottom. You won't be disappointed. Design, price, material, packaging. All first class. Makes a great keepsake. I was so impressed, I bought several and gave them as gifts. So many are so cute and challenging I had to buy them for myself too. I have a collection now and will repeat this review for all of them. They are just fabulous for busy hands and curious minds. Put them on your desk and coffee table. People can't help but pick them up. They look like they'll last for ever. Again, you will not be disappointed with this product. My bet, you will end up buying more than one ! ! ! ! 5cool looking, difficult little puzzlesWe ordered 4 of these Hanayama puzzles, Padlock, enigma, O'gear, and marble. I'm embarrassed to admit, so far we have only figured out o'gear. actually, a few of our friends have also figured out o'gear, but everyone gets flustered with the others. We managed to take marble apart, but can't put it back together. Our genius brother in law, who has a top secret military job where he basicaly solves puzzles for a living (thats all he can tell about it) he became engrossed with the puzles when he came to visit, but hadn't solved them by the time he had to leave, so we ordered more and sent them to him for his birthday! Any way, they are really cool, and make for artistic, interesting looking decorations on our livingroom side table. 5Still trying to solve this one.Looking for a difficult puzzle? This may be the one you want. I have had this for about 4 weeks and I estimate I have taken about 2 hours time trying to solve it. Still not there yet. It looks like it would be not that hard to solve but for sure that is deceiving. I like brain teasers and puzzles and so far this one has me perplexed. I am pretty adept at disentanglement puzzles and the like but this one has been testing my patience and fortitude for sure.It surely deserves the level 5 difficulty. Reading through the reviews I see a few where the reviewers claim this to be an easy puzzle to solve while the majority of reviews I think are being more honest and admitting that it is indeed more difficult than it appears. I purchased this in the 3 pc combo and the other two I had solved within a 1/2 hour of receiving them. They are also good puzzles just not as difficult as this little two rings of frustration. One of those two puzzles was very simple to solve, at least for me because I have seen other puzzles that use the same trick to solve them. For those that have given the various puzzles less stars because they could not solve the puzzles, it is the whole idea behind the "puzzle" to be difficult so why would you take stars away from a product that is precisely what it is supposed to be? Don't knock off stars because you can't solve the puzzle. If it was easily solved it would not be a "puzzle". 5The worst Hanayama puzzle I ownThis is a review of Hanayama's Ring II puzzle.I own 5 Hanayama puzzles: Elk, Padlock, Flag, Chain, and Ring II. Every Hanayama puzzle is created with exquisite craftsmanship. The details are perfect, and the solutions are come to without force, but with cleverness. But with the first 4 Hanayama puzzles I ordered, there was a real satisfaction with how the pieces moved around and with each other to find the solution. You knew you had found it when you get to the point where the pieces seem to almost magically separate, and likewise when they come together into their initial form when you're reassembling it.I didn't get that with Ring II. This piece, which I understand was based on the idea of puzzle rings from years past, simply falls apart when you open it. The pieces are still bound to each other, but it's obviously disassembled immediately. The act of putting it together is then simply a matter of lining up the parts again. There's no satisfying moment when things seem to snap into shape - it's closer to the feeling I get from stacking some poker chips, which is to say: nothing much. In fact, I looked at the solution online to make sure I had done it correctly because it seemed too simple. I had, and it is. Add in the fact that there's not a good way to keep it "together" when you're not fiddling with it, and it's just kind of a mess. It's too big, even to wear as a ring to try to keep it together, even on your thumb. In reality, I'd put this puzzle at a Level 2. It can be "fixed" just by looking at it closely before letting it fall apart. But I'd recommend skipping this puzzle in favor of one of Hanayama's other, and in my opinion, better puzzles. I personally would recommend Flag for an absolute beginner, and Padlock for people who are already quite clever. Get Chain or Elk if you want something that seems simple, but will infuriate you. 2Fantastic puzzle that is made of high quality materialsThis is my first cast logic puzzle I have purchased, and I couldn't be any happier with it.The main goal for me was to have something on my desk I could use to fidget with when I got bored or distracted from work I normally do. I really enjoy online logic puzzles and other 'brain teasing' activities, so I figured having a tactile 'brain teaser' would be a win-win; and I was correct!I actually solved this puzzle by accident in about an hour or two, so I think I just got lucky with it. As soon as it came apart I could see how it went back together, then of course how it would come back apart again. This is a quality puzzle that is extremely well made and constructed of great materials that I would recommend to anyone! 5fun to work withFirst off, I just have to say that they should FIRE the person who rates these things. Starting with the level fours, I will "re-rate" certain puzzlesLEVEL FOURS:Radix and cylinder should be level 5's, and devil a three.LEVEL FIVES:Armor and ring 2 should be 4's,helix a 6,(a sidenote; if you are forcing helix, youre doing it wrong) equa and vortex should be 7's.LEVEL SIXES :Elk, chain, and nutcase should be 5's, square a 4, and quartet a 7THE 5 HARDEST:Helix, enigma, equa, vortex, and, number 1, quartetTHE ACTUAL PUZZLE:I thought that this puzzle was one of the most thought-through puzzles they make. Every little notch is VERY important. I picked up this thing and thought "And this is supposed to be a level 5????!!!!!!!" After 11 days and together about 6 hours of solid work, I FINNALY solve it!!!! (apart and back together) I have yet to master it, but it is, in my opinion, fun to work with. Should you by it? YYYYEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!! You seriously cannot go wrong with this puzzle if you have a LOT of patience, especially for the re-assembly, which is WWWWAAAYYYY harder than the disassembly!!!. 5
