Great for my 9 year old son - a wonderful opportunity to see science "live"!My 9 year old son loves watching the Harvester Ants - the lighted habitat makes it very easy to see all of the tunneling activity. The kit was very simple to assemble and Evviva was very responsive when I submitted my request for ants and the accompanying eBook. I find myself studying the ants and I have often found my teenage daughter gazing at the ants. Very enjoyable gift and I highly recommend it for children that enjoy sciences.Update: it has been a week and a half and the ants have been very busy!Update: it is now late August and the ants are still alive! I have been adding a little bit of water to the gel, it looked a little dry, but very happy since it is still going with the same batch of ants (I still have 12 original ants) 5Should be considered animal cruelty. Molds, and ants just stood around til they died.This thing is awesome if you are sick and love watching suffering. We followed instructions exactly! The ants did NOT like it AT ALL. They just stood around huddled together waiting to die.... which they did, one at a time. The only time they moved at all is to move the dead ants into a pile. Seriously, this should be considered animal cruelty. I am glad they didn't send a queen, because we let the poor survivors go so they could live out their sad little lives in the sunshine, and real dirt in our backyard.Also, the weird blue wetish gel molds. DO NOT get this ant farm! 1Love, love, looooove this ant habitat!!!!!!This is an amazing ant farm!!! My kids (ages 8,4 & 3) & I absolutely love watching these creatures dig & work. We have learned that it seems like they clean each other AND that they work very hard to bury their dead! We watched them actually create a graveyard with the gel! We took one dead ant out to look at under a microscope and within 30 minutes they had completely moved their graveyard to another area of the habitat! The fact that the habitat is completely self contained works perfectly for us because there's little to no risk of them escaping. The kids know not to remove the tiny stopper on the top which would allow them to escape. The habitat is also the perfect size to transport it to the kids classrooms to share with their friends! Please know that the ants need to be ordered separately. 5GREAT HABITAT WITH LARGE MAGNIFYING GLASS - Close Up Photos IncludedI ve had 2 ant habitats over the years for the kids. Because they ve really enjoyed them I decided to get my youngest his own habitat. This habitat by Evviva is made of a clear acrylic habitat that is crystal clear for good visibility. It is not made of cheap, flimsy plastic. It has a lid with a vent. It comes filled with a blue gel that serves as the nutrition and hydration for the ants. It s clear so the gel illuminates the tunnels very well. The gel gives you a very dimensional view of the tunnels. (I ve tried taking close up photos but the it s hard to show the clarity of the tunnels in the glow of the LED light.)First of all you have to order the ants when the temperature is between 40 and 85 degrees F to ensure that the ants make it to you alive. So be aware of this when you gift it in the middle of winter. They may have to wait until spring to order their ants. (I found this out the hard way with my first habitat I ever bought.) They cost about $5 to $7. My 25 ants came with 100% of them surviving the shipment. You put them in the refrigerator (not the freezer) for about 10 minutes. This will slow them down enough so you can put them in their habitat without them scurrying all over the place. And make sure you have everything ready (maybe even an extra pair of hands to put the lid on quickly) so you can get them in as quick as possible. When there s a bunch of them, they appear much faster than they really are. Have a plastic cup on hand to quickly place over an ant just in case one escapes. Slide a piece of paper under the cup and then dump it into the habitat.It takes a couple of days for them to start tunneling and you can use the stick provided to poke a couple starter tunnels to get them jump started on their project. They like the light and are more productive with it. You don t have to add anything to the habitat and you don t have to feed them. I believe it s least a month and then they start dying off but continue living for almost 3 months.They re pretty fascinating and the kids love that it s also a night light. The light can be let on continuously and the bulb never dies out and never gets hot. They also love the magnifying glass for getting a close up view which is larger than what other habitats come with. Sometimes they come with too small of a magnifying glass thats only one inch wide. The cord detaches and the base detaches for easy transporting for kids. They are easy to take to school for show and tell and teachers love having them in the classroom. I value credible, informative, and candid Amazon reviews by other Amazon buyers and hope this review helps you. I m willing to write a little more than the average user because of getting this at a discount. Although I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review, I don t spend all this time and energy to post non-truthful reviews. We have had the ant farm set up for two days now and the ants are busy tunneling! The whole family is interested in watching these amazing creatures. Ordered one for my son for his insect study merit badge. he set it all up himself and made it work fine. Ants love the gel and really started boring through it. He liked it so much he ordered a second. Individual ants don't live forever but more than a month. My son found if you alternate days of the light they rest more and tend to live longer. He liked watching them and doing all the work. No maintenance except occasional carcass removal and that's easy as the ants stack them in the corner. 5Who would have thought....Bought this for our sons 5th birthday. He is obsessed with bugs and thought he'd enjoy. Well, I would never have thought that it would have intrigued the entire family. My husband and I both would check it out daily on the progress. My 3 year old daughter loved to watch them too. It was so very interesting to watch and learn. The ants came easily in the mail, and we followed directions and placed in fridge for few minutes. We did not have any issues with escapes or bites. A few dies within first few days as to be expected. We are 2 months in now and I think we still have 15-20 ants which is pretty good I think. 5Great educational toy for my 6 y/o daughter!We had to order the ants separately. Reading the reviews I was worried they would all be dead but nearly all of the 30 ants were alive. We put the vile of ants in the fridge for about 10 minutes as directed and then we were able to load them into their new home without any problem.The instructions warned that we would have to wait 24-48 hours before they would start tunneling but ours started within about 2 hours. I attached a pic of what it looks like after 5 days. My 6 y/o daughter loves it. She just sits and stares at it for a long time. We both do! She said to me "I can't believe how much those tiny little ants did in such a short time." I told her even small creatures can accomplish a lot with teamwork and perseverance. I think she's learning a lot from her ant farm. 5Ants quickly diedThe ants got sick and died quickly (in less than two weeks, more than half in less than a week). There was not enough air, the ants would try to crawl to the air hole and and pump their abdomens to try and fill their spiracles with enough air to live. We added more holes, but ended up having to remove the lid multiple times a day when we would notice all of the ants sleeping for hours at a time. There didn t seem to be enough nutrition or moisture in the gel either. It was sad and terrible to watch them get sick and die. 1The poor things just wait to dieDid 2 batches of ants. No tunneling occurred. They just huddle and die. Some die fast. Others linger for many days without moving much as if they are conserving energy. Enclosure has no air holes. When I take the top off and blow on them, they become animated for a time. Very sad. I'd like to just put them out of their misery.Update 2/3/2019 Today I took the top off and left the farm on it's side under the trees. They have no queen so won't reproduce biting bugs in the yard. Better to die out there than in some plastic environment. 1
