Customer Reviews

needs very strong wind?Assembly was relatively easy, although it would help if the wire connectors were colored or marked differently. The problem is that the blades only move if there is an extremely strong wind (I had to use a 20" fan at maximum speed and it only moved after pushing the blades with a finger, and even so there was only one very particular position that made the blade to continue rotating). Perhaps I got a lemon, but I doubt. 2Poorly doneI teach, and currently we are speaking about wind energy. I thought this model would be great, it doesn't work, even slightly. Great for a non-working model...But, I have pictures on the internet for that. Not cool. Disappointed a whole group of students. 1Not recommended, complete waste of money!!!You need to find a magic location or cyclone to get the LED lighted. I bought this for my daughter science project, along with this I used hair dryer to rotate this, even though it seemed the turbine was rotating to it's full speed I could not get the light from the LED, finally I asked my daughter to use Multimeter/Voltmeter to prove that it generates electricity. 1To Visualize How Wind Turbines WorkI use these in my elementary science class to show how wind turbines work. They're all right, I have 5 or 6 of them and the tails have broken off 3 of them. They also do need a lot of wind to make the lightbulbs work, so have a good portable fan or blowdryer handy. Otherwise, I like that you can see the gears turn on these, they show how the wind turns the propellers which turns the gears and the kids can visualize how this turning of gears is the mechanical energy which gets converted to electricity inside the generator. 4It looks interesting, but not that functional (even for a toy)Good product until parts start breaking after a couple of days of light use. Unless you expose it to a tornado, the windmill has too much friction to spin fast enough to power the LED (I put it in front of an industrial fan at full blast, and no love, but you can spin it very fast with your fingers and the LED flashes for a split second). The holes/screws are not properly threaded and a lot of effort is required to put things together properly (very cheap parts). I'm not sure what kind of a bottle this would fit, but none of the one I tried (water, sport drinks, etc.) fit and the idea is silly anyway (you can't fill up the bottles with sand or water, and empty bottles would tip over). 3Works, but not by wind power! The kit is well made and easy to assemble, and comes with clear instructions. The resulting windmill fits neatly onto a soda bottle, a 2-litre one being good as it means you can put some sand in the bottle, stand it on the ground and have the blades at kneeling height. The bad news is you would need a gale to get the LED to light! Our solution was a hairdryer on cold setting, which worked fine. 4Too stiff & LED too weak.Easy to build but it takes a much stronger wind than I had expected to actually turn the windmill blades, so mostly we spun it manually to see the LED light up. The LED isn t very strong either, so you need a REALLY windy night to really see this work. 3This blows- in a good way.I mma let you finish, but first I gotta give this five stars. My kids haven t played with it or even opened it, but it looks seriously cool and more than mildly educational. 5Great learning toyI bought this kit as a demonstration for our science unit on renewable/nonrenewable energy. I put it together at school in about twenty minutes, including having to take the unit apart because I put it together wrong. (Totally my fault.) The kit was made of high quality materials. The instructions were adequate. When the kit was put together, it could be demonstrated for the class merely by spinning by hand, or by using a fan. It worked outside during the onset of a rainstorm. I did not set it down as the base (empty soda bottle) is too light to withstand the wind. I would suggest filling the base with sand for stability if you wanted to set it down. I would buy other kits from this company. 52 things to watch out for during assembly to make it work great!I received this today in our RND Lab and assembled it right away. Had 2 issues that once corrected, the unit works just fine.1st, they provide a detailed instruction sheet and it is simple to follow. They "clearly" show the RED wire at the bottom right rear and the BLACK on the other terminal. After assembly the light would not light up. As an engineer, I immediately started trouble shooting and found that if it was spun backwards the LED would light up. Of course being thorough (they recommend twisting the wires which I just can't live with), had to "de-solder" and then re solder the wires to the opposite terminals. Using our shop air compressor system and 40 PSI the LED lit very brightly.2nd, the bottle cap adapter that they recommend adding oil to is molded with too high of a tolerance. To fix this problem, I sanded the very top edge until it was smooth (there is a very definite ridge ring that can be felt around it that is unnecessary). After that it easily spun around as it should.I've added a picture showing the 2 steps above. So, in the end, definitely an excellent product for learning and and the price is very reasonable. If it hadn't been for the extra work it would have been given it all 5 stars. 4
