Customer Reviews

Missing tons of partsThis might be a great set, but we will never know at it came missing so many parts that my son could not build a thing. We worked with Meccano for several weeks to get the missing parts replaced. They acknowledged out email, and then never told us their decision. I finally called their support line today and was told that they do not send replacement parts if it is more than 1 or 2 pieces and that they hoped it was not too late for us to return it to Amazon. If you buy it and it's missing stuff, return it right away. So disappointing! Christmas present fail! 1Not made like the good old daysHad one of these as of the kid so I bought my grandkids one ,not hard to put together it was Better Built when I was growing up look like it was made in China, I have nut that was no good . If you turn the case upside down Parts comes out of the container and get all mixed up missing about maybe 10 pieces ,but for $70 I believe I'm going to return it , the companies all for money now, not product 1i don't think Santa liked me very muchWell, it said it was for ages 8 to 80. I fall close to the high end of that. I was looking for something to do to keep my mind and fingers active and I figured this was a possible option. I never had an erector set as a child...i don't think Santa liked me very much. But now I'm retired and don't have to depend on Santa. What a joy it was to open my treasure and start figuring out things. The first thing I thought about was how much more advanced an 8 year old must be today over my day. But with a little help I was able to figure out things pretty well. I completed my first project today...I didn't bother my wife all day...she was relieved. There is no scientific research to back this up, but I did keep fingers and mind working and it was much more fulfilling than watching TV. I felt good all day and was proud of my accomplishments. I'm looking forward to the next step. As for the product, it was well made and everything worked as advertised. It was double boxed and I think that was because the inner box was pretty much destroyed. The plastic case it came in had some defects but a little duct tape fixed that right up. (Macguiver would have been proud) I had noticed a number of complaints from other owners but I haven't seen any of those.Thank you for a good product and a very nice time. 5Missing Parts?Just received it today. I bought the 2nd Edition version. Based on other reviews here I was curious to see if any parts were missing before I wrapped it as a gift. So I carefully opened it and found what appears to be all the parts - at least the main parts. I did not count the screws, nuts, etc. There is a second layer of parts hidden under the main compartment so you need to explore the case a bit to find everything. For now I plan to keep it and give it to my son for Christmas. I played with a set 35 years ago and hope this new set is as good or better than the old. I only gave it four starts because I do not know how well it will work once we open it all the way. 4Fun classic style erector set!Purchased for my daughter, and she loves it. However, it is missing one piece that is critical to the assembly of the helicopter. We sent a letter to Meccano about 11 weeks ago to request the missing piece, but we still have not received it. 4Terrible!! If I couldTerrible!!If I could, I would give it zero star. I had read some of the reviews but despite the bad reviews stating the parts were missing (some reviews had not any issues with parts) I placed an order. When the first order arrive, I opened the package only to notice that about 1/4 of the parts were missing! Large sized parts too (in the booklet that is included with the set, there is list of pieces and it was very obvious that pieces were missing). I called Amazon and they graciously offered a replacement. Well, the second set had the same exact issue! I returned both sets to Amazon. Then I went back and read the reviews more carefully. It turned out that the lower stars reviews were written by parents or parents that actually were involved in the process of helping their kids use the set. The higher review stars were written by those who gave the set as a gift to a nephew or grandchild (thus I don't think there were aware of any missing pieces). Don't waste your money or time on this particular set, you will be very disappointed! 1Hope you have the time to put it together with your kidWell, Amazon says 8 and up, the box says 10 and up, I say 12 and up unless you intend to spend a lot of time helping with assembly. The assembly instructions for the crane, only project so far, were clearly designed by an engineer, and an inexperienced engineer at that, WITHOUT any input from a mechanic. There are some significant order of assembly errors and at least one of the steps requires a little stressing of plastic which doesn't quite fit. Now, as a toy for bonding with your little builder and something to develop their mechanical abilities (something sorely lacking with the millenials) it's pretty good, but the manufacturer obviously didn't "waste" any funds on real world testing, and not having any included spares for a toy aimed at grade school kids with as many small parts as this has is going beyond cheap.BTW, I am an electrician, so I know the real world very well, as opposed to the ridiculous plans sometimes handed me by the engineers. 3when package was opened discovered a lot of pieces were ...when package was opened discovered a lot of pieces were missing when grandson was trying to build with it according to instruction manual. Have been trying for months to get all missing parts and each time they only send part of them. Would not have purchased had I known it would be such a hassle to get all the missing parts. 2A Must BuyWow, what a fun kit. I've spent hours relaxing and putting different projects together. You can follow the instructions that come with the kit or let your creative side go crazy. The motor is powerful and all of the pulleys work great. Even for an older person like me, it's a ton of fun. I have very fond memories of erector kits when I was a kid. This brings a lot of those memories back. Glad I found and purchased this. The portioned slots in the carry case help keep parts separated and easy to access. This thing is great and well worth the money. A must have for those who used and remember erector sets. 5High quality parts but no gears or plates.Like millions of adults, I look back fondly on my years playing with Erector/Meccano sets. The meccano glory days for me were the early 90's, and I had an Erector Set 6 and maybe two 3's with missing parts. I still have that kit, though most pieces are rusted or broken.I've been waiting for my son to come of age, and it looks like that time may be now. He's 5, and I don't want to introduce it too early, but when he discovered my kit he was begging me to play with it. I gave him a test. If he could fasten and tighten two metal strips with a nut and bolt, I'd get him a kit of his own. I'm really impressed to say that he did it!This kit is much like my Erector Set 6. It comes in a nearly identical case. The color is different, and the layout is slightly different (no space for the old useless drill thing). I never really liked that case though, and I don't like this one. You can close it, and it'll keep all your pieces inside, but they will all roll around and get into other compartments. It's hard to believe that they were unable to design a better case without this flaw in over 20 years.Anyway, the kit itself has some pros and cons.Pros:-The pieces seem very high quality. Higher quality than my childhood set. The sharp edges are gone and the finish is really nice. (This is only for this 25-in-1 set. The other sets are mostly cheap plastic and the pieces aren't general purpose.)-Many pieces have a better design. The motor has bolt holders so you don't need to have hands on both sides to tighten it to another piece. The rods are slightly flat along the length so it's easier to affix a pulley such that it won't spin in place.-Everything seems compatible with my old kit, and the manual has part numbers for every part. Those numbers match my old kit when the two kits have the pieces in common. There's a website in the UK where you can buy original-used and reproduction parts. (meccanospares dot com)-The Meccano website seems to be willing to send out replacements for lost, broken, or missing pieces.-My kit arrived with no missing pieces.Cons:-There are no gears. I feel like this was one of the crucial aspects of this toy. They've been conceptually replaced by pulleys. It's nice that pulleys are still there, but the gears opened my mind as a kid. Maybe they don't want to deal with oil to lube them. Well I never did as a kid. The parts did eventually wear and break, but if my kid spends half as long playing with this toy as I did I'll buy him another one.-No flat plates. The sets of the 90's had these yellow metal and blue/transparent plastic plates. All pieces like this are gone. You can only make objects that are frames. There's no making walls.-No long pieces. My old kit had metal strips as long as 25 holes. The longest here are significantly shorter.-There are still 640 pieces---exactly the same as my old erector set 6. BUT if you compare the piece counts, you find significantly fewer pieces of substance. There are more nuts and bolts, more washers and plastic stoppers/spacers, but there are fewer metal strips, fewer flanged plates, and fewer building platforms.-This is a minor complaint. The motor/battery assembly is all one piece. The older kit has two wires coming out of each motor and a battery pack with two terminals out the side. You had to strip the wires and bend them around the battery terminals. I'm sure this simplifies play for a lot of kids, but how are kids supposed to be introduced to electricity?I gave this kit 3 stars. Honestly maybe that's a little harsh. The kit does what it claims to do, and the pieces are higher quality than before. I'm sure my kid will love it, he was so excited to open it and start. Children can learn so much from this kit--better dexterity, better spacial reasoning and better planning. They can get a feel for which direction you need to screw to tighten loosen, begin to understand pulleys and motors. It's pretty much endless. But I feel like there's so much missing. And there's no good way to fix that with money. Meccano, you're sitting on a gold mine. Your toys created a generation of engineers that are now parents with deep pockets. Quit making plastic, single use garbage, and get back to the basics. I don't care what it costs, I want my kid to be able to experience Meccano in all its glory. Steel isn't that expensive anyway. At $0.25/lb, you don't even have a dollar of the stuff in the kit. If you don't Iron Commander/Steel Works/IQ toys, etc. will take your lunch. They already sell more for less. You have no intellectual property to protect you, and only one product that is worth a damn--this one. 3
